...or is this slightly odd behaviour with regard to leftovers?

At FIL's house. Yesterday I singlehandedly cooked a 3 course Christmas dinner for 11 people then went to bed about 9:30 because 25w pregnant and knackered. Woke up this morning and opened the fridge and you would not know it was Christmas yesterday. Every single leftover item has been portioned up and frozen and added to the "freezer spreadsheet" pinned to the noticeboard in the kitchen.

I was thinking along the lines of bubbles and squeak with fried eggs and cold meat for lunch, turkey sandwiches for snacks, big pan of veg soup for the next few days' food. Basically - no 'proper' cooking but lots of nice food.

I asked FIL if he'd frozen everything (as opposed to putting in garage fridge etc) and he thanked me for cooking and said he'd barely have to cook for himself over the next few days because of everything he was left with. In the same breath, he asked if I wanted some mince defrosting to make a chilli tonight.

AIBU to feel like it's not really up to him to freeze all the Christmas leftovers to be eaten when we've all left? Him and I paid for the food 50:50.

It should have been discussed and shared out equally, but there's nothing weird about freezing it all for later use, we never have leftovers on Boxing Day, we prefer to have something completely different.

DierdrePewtey · 26/12/2016 13:02

This thread has made me go and make a cold meat sandwich. After I have just eaten a chocolate orange. So OP you are personally responsible for making fatter than I was 20 minutes ago

Katedotness1963 · 26/12/2016 13:03

Leftovers are the reason we have Christmas dinner at home rather than going to a restaurant where I'd have to do no cooking or clearing up. If I wasn't going to get yummy leftovers it'd be a hotel next year!

saoirse31 · 26/12/2016 13:05

I don't know, does he have any financial issues, would u know if he has? Does he have difficulty cooking, how old is he not just in age terms ? He obv has a reasonable relationship with u and family, given ur there and cooking, so maybe just accept its slightly odd, there may be reasons you don't know and regard it as a good deed by you...

Don't really get the hate tbh

Rioja123 · 26/12/2016 13:09

I honestly cannot believe some of the threads i am reading about food today! Confused

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/12/2016 13:13

This is real cheeky-fecker behaviour, OP! Most people's Boxing Day food plans depend on the left overs - and it is beyond cheeky for him to appropriate all the leftovers when you have paid for half the food.

Add in the chilli he clearly expects you to cook, and I reckon you are long overdue a serious Christmas strop. Not an ordinary one - the fully orchestrated, all-singing, all-dancing, tinsel-bedecked strop.

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 26/12/2016 13:14

Deidre I feel your pain. Sue the arse off OPs FIL for your extra adiposity.

Nobody needs this sh*t!

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 26/12/2016 13:17

And I will provide flags, flute and drum!

youarenotkiddingme · 26/12/2016 13:19

Definitely strange. EVERYONE knows leftovers are for the next few days!

Ds and I have just had pulled pork leftover from Xmas eve. Sided with various random things including cheese from cheeseboard, rolls, salad stuff, yorkshires and coleslaw!

Both are now laying on sofa having stuffed our faces - again Grin (neither of us had breakfast!)

Dinner tonight is likely to be pudding stuff sided with cream.

I may cook again sometime midweek Wink

Ditsy4 · 26/12/2016 13:20

Can we come and watch?

Ditsy4 · 26/12/2016 13:27

We went out yesterday. Seriously missing my left overs. However I told DH he can cook as " I never cook on Boxing Day" Grin so left him and DD to get on with it. I on the other hand have had a lovely lie in. I have been unwell before Christmas but carried on as you do so made up for it this morning! Wink
He is making M&S lamb crown( all done for you) and veg and two of the DSs are coming before and after work.so he has just veggies to do as we have smoked salmon and bought( usually make) Christmas pud. DD is making her own thing. No doubt the boys will sample both!

dementedma · 26/12/2016 13:31

Left over roasties and gravy for breakfast here
Left over unused veggies in soup
Left over cooked veggies heated up tonight with leftover turkey

BertrandRussell · 26/12/2016 13:40

I caught myself thinking, as dp got stuff out to cook yesterday Christmas dinner yesterday "Oh wow-the soup is going to be amazing!"

LadyFlumpalot · 26/12/2016 13:53

As I read this I'm eating my lunch. Leftovers fried in copious amounts of butter. Nobody cooks new food on Boxing Day! Personally I'd just take half of it home with you quite quietly. No bother, no fuss.

Lilaclily · 26/12/2016 13:55

Erm he might not be greedy or thoughtless, he might be poor and not used to cooking for himself , he might not want to waste anything, it sounds to be that he's being thrifty so hopefully he's got good reason to be ?

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 26/12/2016 14:04

That sounds a good Christmas breakfast/lunch/tea/supper kidding,

Sounds Ace to me!

Well, we have defrosting leftovers and a FIL with a face like a slapped arse. I have taken out many tiny cling filmed portions of leftovers af announced what I'm doing with them today. FIL whined that he has done all the work to measure them out and thought we'd leave it for him. He's not frail or infirm and is perfectly capable of cooking for himself. He is, however, very miserly. There are also spreadsheets of central heating vs. outside temperature; hot water usage variance with houseguests, for example.

There are 6 to cook for today. Other 5 from yesterday are relatives within 45 mins drive so they just came for the day. Tomorrow we are going to have 2nd Christmas with my family who are much more normal and I cannot wait.

DrunkenUnicorn · 26/12/2016 14:18

Well done op!

naranciata · 26/12/2016 14:23

Oh and he's not miserly because he's badly off. He's just tight.

OP posts:
Cherrysoup · 26/12/2016 14:29

Bloody well done! He sounds like he has serious control issues, OP?

Belleblush · 26/12/2016 14:31

Mean and miserly. I'd be angry too.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIAmOhNo · 26/12/2016 14:32

Well done. Why don't you direct operations from a comfy seat - your back MUST be sore, after all the time you spent on your feet yesterday, and a hot drink would help as well, wouldn't it?

YourHandInMyHand · 26/12/2016 14:36

Well done for getting the leftovers out.

Can't believe you did all the cooking yesterday and were expected to do the same again today! I'd be seriously thinking about what my plans were for next Christmas, especially as you will also have a baby to care for.

We've got tonnes of leftovers and that was the plan! I don't intend to cook a proper meal again for days! Me and DP just had a lovely leftovers plate of cold cuts of meat, pickles, pork pie, buttered fresh bread, etc. Your FIL sounds very mean spirited.

Hellmouth · 26/12/2016 14:36

The tight fisted ones are the worst. I'm glad you stood your ground OP!
