AIBU to have pushed in front of the front at the customer service desk?

I had an opticians appointment and had to go and wear the contact lenses for a while so decided to pick up some last minute gifts.

When I got back to the opticians, I released that I didn't have my handbag. My optician said to go and look for it but he was leaving in an hour and I need these lenses for my holiday.

The traffic was so heavy and I had 7 shops to check in an hour plus the traffic.

When I got to customer services, all I wanted to know was whether they had my bag. The qs were miles long and so I went to the front, apologised and asked if they had my bag. Some staff ignored me and other shoppers were swearing at me. I was in tears. My bag had £300.00 in and all my credit cards plus things like my address book.

I finally found my bag at asda (4th shop) and got back with literally minutes to spare.

BUT was IBU to push in for something so important?

Please be gentle with me. Confused

periwinklepickspoppies · 24/12/2016 13:40

YABU but I can understand why; I'd have been tempted to do the same if it was me. Incidentally, are you sure the contact lens work if you didn't see that you hadn't got your handbag?!

Olympiathequeen · 24/12/2016 13:41

No. It was a desperate situation.

lottieandmia · 24/12/2016 13:42

Yanbu - I think I would have announced the situation loudly to everyone and asked them to please understand.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 24/12/2016 13:49

I understand why you did it but jumping the queue is going to fuck a lot of people off

bunnylove99 · 24/12/2016 13:57

YANBU. Nobody likes a Q jumper and peoples tempers fray easily at this time of year. You did the right thing though - losing valuable handbag (and not seeing properly for holidays) would count as emergencies worthy of Q jumping. You clearly normally queue fairly and that's why the backlash is upsetting for you. Move on and enjoy Christmas. Perhaps be a little more organised next year! I'm the type to lose/forgot things too - it's rushing about with too many things on your mind that does it!

SpookyPotato · 24/12/2016 14:00

I wouldn't have minded if I saw how distressed you were, don't take it personally as people are so stressed at this time of year. Forget about it and enjoy Christmas!

Libitina · 24/12/2016 14:04

YABU

It wasn't a lost child or a medical emergency.

toptoe · 24/12/2016 14:08

nope, you should have been able to have priority. You found it. Don't worry too much about it now, shoppers can lose their humanity when they have to queue.

lovelearning · 24/12/2016 14:14

was IBU to push in for something so important?

user1482575681, it was unreasonable to jump the queue without apologising.

Speak up as you pass your fellow customers:

"Excuse me, please - I'm jumping the queue because it's urgent."

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 24/12/2016 14:27

Totally understandable, although I understand why ppl were annoyed. You must have been panicking.

user1481201991 · 24/12/2016 14:38

I'm a bit confused. If Asda was the 4th shop back when you were retracing your steps and your cards and cash were in your bag, how did you shop in the next 3 shops?

Also as the shops were a car journey away it's lucky your car keys weren't also in your handbag!

Anyway I don't think it's unreasonable to ask to go ahead of someone in a queue if there's a genuine urgent reason. I wouldn't appreciate someone just pushing in though.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 24/12/2016 14:55

People were standing in a queue for Customer Services on Christmas Eve. They would have been stressed and pissed off before you pushed in - I shouldn't think you ruined anyone's day Xmas Wink.

Had I been in the queue, I would have been initially annoyed that someone was pushing in - but not if I had known why. I definitely think a lost handbag containing that much cash is much more important than returning a manky parsnip etc.

purplefizz26 · 24/12/2016 15:42

No, not unreasonable.

I couldn't queue that long in a panic, refunds, exchanges, complaints, especially if you get an arse hole having a good whinge, take ages.

Your quick question would not have impacted on those waiting drastically.

user1482575681 · 24/12/2016 16:30

Not to drip feed but I suffer from anxiety and also crumbling discs in my back. I have just been made redundant so the £300.00 in my bag was for my DDs nursery fees. I cant afford to lose that sort of money. I had worked myself up so much during the week about the opticians appointment and was so proud that I had gone to the shops. I did start phoning the stores at the opticians but wasn't getting anywhere so the optician could hear me getting worked up and told me to come back in an hour.

I had my debit card and credit card in the pocket of the my mobile phone and keys in my pocket.

I was having severe panic attacks and took some diazpam to calm myself down but my tolerance to it is so high it didn't work.

I dont see me as more important as anyone else but it had £300.00 in, the rest of my credit cards, my address book and appointment letters.

If id qued in each shop, It would have taken hours and I cant stand or walk for longer than 10 minutes. :-(

Not to drip feed but and then the biggest drip feed ever!

I'm glad you got your bag back, now try to forget it and enjoy your Christmas!

(But next time explain to people before pushing in!)

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 24/12/2016 16:37

Look, some people in the queue will have thought you were unreasonable, some people here might still think you were unreasonable.

Let them, no one died, you are not applying for a perfect person award.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 24/12/2016 16:49

YANBU - you sometimes have to prioritise yourself and this was one of those times. Some people are grumpy though.

caroldecker · 24/12/2016 18:00

Can't stand or walk for more than 10 mins, but went round 4 shops, pushed to the front of each queue and back to the opticians in an hour.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 24/12/2016 18:19

Apart from the fact that's a massive dripfeed, so what? I suffer from anxiety too and have back problems. So I would be incredibly stressed by what you did - it was a mistake but it was you that left your bag behind. You should have taken your place in the queue

harshbuttrue1980 · 24/12/2016 18:31

How do you know that nobody else in the queue has anxiety or back problems?? Everyone is in a rush at christmas. I have GAD, and had to queue for ages to buy some shopping yesterday, and then was in a rush as I had to pick up my mum (in her 70's) from the train station. If you had shoved in front of me, I would have said something to you, and it wouldn't have been very polite I'm afraid. You're no more or less important than anyone else on the planet.

MrsTrentReznor · 24/12/2016 18:57

YANBU. I had my handbag stolen once, i had stitches in my hand so couldn't drive. My taxi money for the next 2 weeks was in that bag along with my cards. I had to wait 10 days for replacement cards, had no money to get home, no way to get in when I got there, no phone to call for help etc.
A bag is a hell of a lot more important than a missing turkey.

YWNBU. I wouldn't have been annoyed at all if I knew you were looking for a lost bag. In that situation I would have acted quite panicky and worried, apologising profusely to people at the front of the queue and letting them know you were in a panic and you had lost your bag.
Glad you found it!
