AIBU to have pushed in front of the front at the customer service desk?

I had an opticians appointment and had to go and wear the contact lenses for a while so decided to pick up some last minute gifts.

When I got back to the opticians, I released that I didn't have my handbag. My optician said to go and look for it but he was leaving in an hour and I need these lenses for my holiday.

The traffic was so heavy and I had 7 shops to check in an hour plus the traffic.

When I got to customer services, all I wanted to know was whether they had my bag. The qs were miles long and so I went to the front, apologised and asked if they had my bag. Some staff ignored me and other shoppers were swearing at me. I was in tears. My bag had £300.00 in and all my credit cards plus things like my address book.

I finally found my bag at asda (4th shop) and got back with literally minutes to spare.

BUT was IBU to push in for something so important?

Please be gentle with me. Confused

YABU

It would have been good to have the new lenses for your holiday but I you could have made do with your old ones and/or your glasses.

Other people, not all, in the queues could have had much more important (to them at least) or felt just as stressed. Its understandable they were annoyed and the staff were ignoring you.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 24/12/2016 12:15

I highly doubt the queues were full of people whom all had to locate a VERY important lost item. YANBU. Swearing was uncalled for. Season of goodwill eh?

This^

I got swore at in the summer doing similar. It was my birthday and some little scrote had pinched my purse from my bag amongst the crowds. I was frantically trying to retrace my steps in several shops but was explaining to the queues as I went ahead. The explanation didn't stop me from receiving abuse and death stares either.

I guess ringing customer services at this time of year would have probably have took longer than just popping into the store anyway.

Mynestisfullofempty · 24/12/2016 12:17

Why are so many people assuming that the other people in the queue had something trivial to deal with?

yoowhoo · 24/12/2016 12:17

You were definitely not being unreasonable! Unfortunately I think Christmas is such a stressful time of year that people don't often think of others. Queues are long, shops are busy and we just want to get in and out as quickly as possible. But you were asking for a lost handbag not returning anything! Don't give it another thought and I'm so pleased you found it 😊

userformallyknownasuser1475360 · 24/12/2016 12:21

Yabu, you lost your handbag because you were careless, and then expect everyone else to stand by because your problem is more important than theirs?

I also think that the swearing was unreasonable though.

Fireandflames666 · 24/12/2016 12:26

Definitely not. Those other people in line would have done the same if their bag was lost with that amount of cash in it.

TrickyD · 24/12/2016 12:27

Not at all unreasonable. So pleased you found it, have a very happy Christmas.

The2ndSpartacus · 24/12/2016 12:28

I don't think ywbu at all. It's a dog eat dog world out there. Grin

vacati0n · 24/12/2016 12:28

No yanbu , if it was a quick question I wouldn't care if someone went in front of me .

CaraAspen · 24/12/2016 12:37

Of course you weren't being unreasonable. You were in a panic and naturally it would have been totally ridiculous to have done anything other that rush to the front. All you wanted to know was whether your bag was there. I would have been understanding if I had been near enough in the queue to hear what the issue was all about.

Why are some people so nasty? I would have thought M&S staff would have been properly trained and would not have ignored anyone asking them a question. I think I would write a letter of complaint to M&S about the way you were treated when you were already in a highly stressful situation.

CaraAspen · 24/12/2016 12:38

So glad it was all ok in the end, though.Flowers

frostyfingers · 24/12/2016 12:42

I would have let you go in front of me, assuming you'd explained so I didn't think you were just randomly pushing in!

gillybeanz · 24/12/2016 12:43

Yes YWBU, not everyone else's fault you lost your bag.
I'd have made you go back to the end of the queue if I'd have been on the desk.
Sorry you had a hard time though, hope it's going better now.

MrsJayy · 24/12/2016 12:44

People are weird at Christmas everybody is grumpy and stressed all need to be somewhere important and people who are perfectly reasonable humans normally turn into snarly creatures

Therealbridgetjones · 24/12/2016 12:44

You'll never see any of them again so I doubt it matters either way.

You're probably still feeling stressed; forget about it.

Glad you found your bag.

greenfolder · 24/12/2016 12:45

You got it sorted and the worst thing that happened was a person swearing at you.

Therealbridgetjones · 24/12/2016 12:46

Also I second the person that said people can get nasty this time of year.

I used to work on a customer service desk and some people were downright horrible; even more so the closer we got to Christmas. I know there's lots of pressure and stress but IMO no need to forget manners.

MrsJayy · 24/12/2016 12:49

Dd used to work in a supermarket she dreaded being on Customer service at Christmas she said customers were nuts

Sirzy · 24/12/2016 13:01

As for the staff ignoring you. More likely they were just aware of the queue saw you walk in so stuck with the order they could see people were waiting in.

ilongforlustre · 24/12/2016 13:05

I think what is key here is that the people in the queue didn't know your situation. There are plenty of self important people who think they are too special to wait or more stressed than anyone else.

In this instance YWNBU but unless everyone had the situation announced I don't think you can be surprised at the reactions.

Forget it now at least you found the bag. Merry Christmas.

Lindy2 · 24/12/2016 13:06

I'd have done the same. Searching for a lost handbag is not the same as a usual general customer service enquiry. I'm glad you found it.
I left my bag under a restaurant table the other day. I realised as soon as I got outside in the car park but it was really worrying for the few minutes that I knew I'd left it behind.

RustyBear · 24/12/2016 13:08

For those saying OP should have phoned - maybe her phone was in the bag...

thatsnotmyusername · 24/12/2016 13:11

Of course you were not unreasonable. Glad you got your bag back. I don't think there is ever really cause to swear at another person! Xmas does bring out the worst sometimes.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/12/2016 13:18

Yes YWBU.

You didn't have a clue why anyone else was queuing. You didn't know who was standing there with a painful condition or disability.

limitedperiodonly · 24/12/2016 13:19

YANBU. Glad you found your bag.

I had to queue at customer services this morning. I went really early when Sainsbury's was deserted and felt very smug. By the time I realised my fresh hollandaise sauce was cracked and had leaked everywhere (yes, 1st world problem, I know) and returned it, the shop was heaving. Even so, I'd have realised that your need to find your £300 was greater than mine.

Merry Christmas
