AIBU to have pushed in front of the front at the customer service desk?

I had an opticians appointment and had to go and wear the contact lenses for a while so decided to pick up some last minute gifts.

When I got back to the opticians, I released that I didn't have my handbag. My optician said to go and look for it but he was leaving in an hour and I need these lenses for my holiday.

The traffic was so heavy and I had 7 shops to check in an hour plus the traffic.

When I got to customer services, all I wanted to know was whether they had my bag. The qs were miles long and so I went to the front, apologised and asked if they had my bag. Some staff ignored me and other shoppers were swearing at me. I was in tears. My bag had £300.00 in and all my credit cards plus things like my address book.

I finally found my bag at asda (4th shop) and got back with literally minutes to spare.

BUT was IBU to push in for something so important?

Please be gentle with me. Confused

How did you shop in shops 5,6,7 without your handbag?

blamethecat · 24/12/2016 11:15

Ywbu you shouldn't have left it to the last minute to go to the opticians, you shouldn't have pushed in.

UnicornInDMboots · 24/12/2016 11:16

I think she meant it was the 4th shop out of the 7 that she had to check?

Snap8TheCat · 24/12/2016 11:17

Yes but why wouldn't you go back to the last shop first? Surely the last place you had it?

OpheliaHamlet · 24/12/2016 11:20

...yes, surely you left bag in last shop you paid for something?

YelloDraw · 24/12/2016 11:23

I probably would have called rather than going in person.

50/50 on the going to the front - yours was time important but you don't know what other people were in the q for.

TheWoodlander · 24/12/2016 11:27

It is annoying when people ignore the queue to ask something - but I think YWNBU in this case. I would've forgiven you.

Don't think about it any more - you've got your bag, all is well.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 24/12/2016 11:30

Can't say I mind when people have lost property and don't need the undivided attention of a sales assistant for 10 minutes. YWNBU

mirokarikovo · 24/12/2016 11:31

surely you left bag in last shop you paid for something?

Not necessarily. Sometimes if the next shop I am going to is nearby I will stuff my debit card in a pocket instead of putting it away with the rest of my cards. It's easy to get flustered at this time of year.

I don't think ywbu op.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/12/2016 11:33

you needed to have cried and told everyone you had lost your bag. (less swearing and more sympathy. )

BadKnee · 24/12/2016 11:37

Of course YWNBU - glad you found it

Confutatis · 24/12/2016 11:41

Maybe next time you could ask a sales assistant to go to the front of the queue for you? Nobody would know or bat an eyelid. Glad you found your bag; these things do my head in too.

harshbuttrue1980 · 24/12/2016 11:43

YWBU. You were just thinking of yourself and didn't have a care about anyone else. How do you know that other people int he queue didn't have to do something important after they had been to customer services, like pick up a child from nursery or an elderly relative from the train station? Its a QUEUE. That means first come, first served.

MrsJayy · 24/12/2016 11:45

Good god what a panic you must have been in yanbu to have gone to the front yes you probably got tutted at but it was important and by the time you got there you would have been frantic glad you found it. Put it out of your mind now Flowers

Mehfruittea · 24/12/2016 11:45

I regularly have to push in or jump the queue in some way. I use a wheelchair now but spent 4 years struggling on my feet with mobility problems. My only reason for pushing in is that I can't stand long enough to queue up. There were times when I would get sworn at or verbally abused. I always offered to wait in the queue if they had a chair I could sit on. Some places are better than others for accommodating - and those places would be my 'go to' shops.

The question here is - do you believe your need was greater than others? When you don't know why everyone else is waiting? You had a sense of entitlement over others, and are now looking for validation.

I personally would be extra kind to strangers to make up for it. Letting drivers out at junctions is really easy and only costs you seconds. As you found your handbag, maybe a small donation to a food bank could ease your Conscience? Do something nice for someone else. Merry Christmas! Xmas Smile

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 24/12/2016 11:46

I'd say it's forgivable. It's a quick request to resolve and something you need an answer quickly for.

Rainmaker1 · 24/12/2016 11:54

Sorry OP but this was no one's fault but your own. If you'd pushed in front of me I'd have gone nuclear.

Benedikte2 · 24/12/2016 11:55

Your quest was urgent irrespective of whether you had to be back at the opticians. I'd feel as panicked at the loss of my bag even if I didn't have a deadline to meet, and I think most women (except the mega rich) would be in the same boat. I would act as you did, but maybe screech that I'd lost my bag for the benefit of the queuing folk.
Just forget about the horror of it now and enjoy your Christmas. Alls well that ends well!

Trifleorbust · 24/12/2016 11:56

I don't think many of the people in the queue would have been waiting on something that is urgent in the same way that a missing handbag on Christmas Eve is urgent. They were harsh to be rude to you about it.

WellKnackered · 24/12/2016 11:59

YANBU

Not at all. I would have done the same. Not because of needing to hurry for the opticians but because I would be really nervous about the lost handbag.

I would have pushed to the front and apologised loudly and told everyone that it was because I was in a panic about my lost bag.

I'm glad you found it.

MedwayMumoffour · 24/12/2016 11:59

Not unreasonable at all. Leaving picking up last minute shopping isn't the same importance as your bag. This time of year brings out the worst and best in people.
I would just forget it and think more about the lovely honest person that put it aside

Sirzy · 24/12/2016 12:00

If she didn't explain though how would they know why she was pushing in?

If someone pushed in I would be pissed off. If someone explained a situation like that I would happily let them go first.

I think it's the assuming your more important that would understandably annoy some people.

YourFace · 24/12/2016 12:05

Not unreasonable. Glad you got your bag and therefore eyes sorted. I 100% guarantee everyone else's need wasn't as great as your's, in that queue. They weren't in a&e fgs!!

caroldecker · 24/12/2016 12:05

Maybe others in the queue also needed to get to the opticians, get home for the childminder etc.
It was your fault you lost the bag, other people should not have to pay for your issues.
If you'd asked each person and shuffled up the line, then fine.
