Name changed. 20odd year old DC has just hosted a pre party at ours. After their v noisy departure went into the room they had been in to check for forgotten candles etc. Found a hand written note on headed note paper from one of this country's most august body's. It is an addendum note and asks the recipient to send the note writer their "term time address" plus more, but never stepping over a line.
I have no idea of sender or recipient, but they all went to a school which arranges many work placements in said body.my DC has been one of them. A number of the school alumni have ended up working there as a career
All individuals are 21 plus but I am at a loss. Unhappy the note could be pressure on someone not yet properly mature. i accept I probably cannot intervene, don't think it is my own DC, so just your thoughts please?

OP posts:

"august body" isn't particularly obscure I assumed OP was referring to Oxford or Cambridge university.

JoffreyBaratheon · 24/12/2016 10:12

George Osbourn's at a loose end, now. Just saying.

buttercup54321 · 24/12/2016 10:13

August body?

JunosRevenge · 24/12/2016 10:14

*" letters being the most discrete form of communication".

I'd be shocked if a member of an "august body" didn't know the difference between "discreet" and "discrete"*

This!

Lorelei76 · 24/12/2016 10:14

Empress, I can't think why you'd think OP was American.

This "not yet mature" adult - ugh.

Idontmeanto · 24/12/2016 10:15

Is it too soon to nominate this for classics? It's made for a wonderful giggle this morning!

Lorelei76 · 24/12/2016 10:15

I mean, concept of not mature adult btw. Sorry, caught the OP vague bug!!

Manumission · 24/12/2016 10:17

august body" isn't particularly obscure I assumed OP was referring to Oxford or Cambridge university

And the school sends the pupils on placement and lots of them then start careers there? Oxbridge isn't that cosy is it? Grin

YelloDraw · 24/12/2016 10:17

I consider myself to be quite good at comprehension... but I've got nothing here!

Isitadoubleentendre · 24/12/2016 10:22

Forgotten candles - left lit?

Oh, I see, yes that makes sense. I was imagining her going in to check that no one had left their Jo Malone behind!

Still an odd thing to think to have to check for after a party of 20 year olds but anyway.....

afterthis · 24/12/2016 10:23

God if I'd had a penny for every time I had received a hand written note on official paper from an August body, well...

Bestthingever · 24/12/2016 10:24

I'm confused!

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 24/12/2016 10:25

Is an August body like a Summer body? That will be probably my first and last contribution to this very confusing problem.

FindoGask · 24/12/2016 10:27

august
ɔːˈɡʌst/
adjective
respected and impressive.
"she was in august company"
synonyms: distinguished, respected, eminent, venerable, hallowed, illustrious, prestigious, renowned, celebrated, honoured, acclaimed, esteemed, exalted, highly regarded, well thought of, of distinction, of repute;

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 24/12/2016 10:27

Also i thought the issue was going to be that you had discovered a drug stash. But no even worse than that it was a letter Xmas Shock

Gollygeewhizztits · 24/12/2016 10:31

Huh? Do other people in this thread actually know what the OP is talking about? I'm flummoxed.

SuperFlyHigh · 24/12/2016 10:36

It's prince Andrew messing around again with under age girls...

Palace connection or if OPs DD had temped or something at Foreign Office she may have had contact with him.

Don't laugh but someone high up and older has apparently been grooming females for affairs in a high up establishment think arts, according to a friend of mine. No she didn't bite!

Gazelda · 24/12/2016 10:37

I feel slightly more educated from reading this thread. And I'm going to Award myself 10 points (and a glass of champagne) every time I use the phrase 'august body' in conversation tomorrow. I might also have an internal giggle to myself too.

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 24/12/2016 10:47

Are all the months secretly doubling up as adjectives and I never knew until now? E.g. "That meal was excellent but it was ever so slightly January."

Isitadoubleentendre · 24/12/2016 10:54

I have literally never heard of 'august' in that context before.

Every day is a school day on Mumsnet!

CondensedMilkSarnies · 24/12/2016 11:01

Right ! Here is my understanding :

The Op's adult children and their mates had a gathering at her house and because it's Christmas they had lots of candles for atmospheric effect .

The Op's adult children and their mates then went out. The Op was worried they hadn't blown the candles out so went to check . She then found a letter from a Posh (August/Augoost) institution (Houses of Parliament ).

The letter said something about keeping stuff a secret and only communicating by written letter as this was discreet and the least likely way of anyone else reading it (unlike email, Twitter etc )

The Op jumped to the conclusion that a senior member of Parliament was grooming one of the young people.

MsHooliesCardigan · 24/12/2016 11:02

I think august used in this sense has the emphasis on the 'gust' whereas August, as in the month, has the emphasis on the 'Au'.
I feel like I have entered a parallel universe

CondensedMilkSarnies · 24/12/2016 11:03

I think August in this context is pronounced Augoost .

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 24/12/2016 11:04

Really how pretentioos

CondensedMilkSarnies · 24/12/2016 11:08

I heard it used quite a bit in a job I had years and years ago. The chap whose favourite word it seemed to be pronounced it Augoost . Mind you he also pronounced Clapham as Claaaaaarm , so I could be wrong Grin
