Name changed. 20odd year old DC has just hosted a pre party at ours. After their v noisy departure went into the room they had been in to check for forgotten candles etc. Found a hand written note on headed note paper from one of this country's most august body's. It is an addendum note and asks the recipient to send the note writer their "term time address" plus more, but never stepping over a line.
I have no idea of sender or recipient, but they all went to a school which arranges many work placements in said body.my DC has been one of them. A number of the school alumni have ended up working there as a career
All individuals are 21 plus but I am at a loss. Unhappy the note could be pressure on someone not yet properly mature. i accept I probably cannot intervene, don't think it is my own DC, so just your thoughts please?

Approved answer (verified by Philip)
Mr Wordy:
"august" here is an adjective meaning "inspiring respect and admiration" (definition from COED, saving me thinking one up!). It's pronounced with the stress on the second syllable (unlike the month).

"body" means "group", "collection" (of students and professors).

Manumission · 24/12/2016 07:54

Now I am confused. Who the fuck is Phillip?

Mooey89 · 24/12/2016 07:55

My money is on drinking game.
When I was at uni we invented a 'peg regiment' complete with badges and all sorts.

I bet it's overly involved drinking game

bloodymaria · 24/12/2016 08:15

Well, a Christmas mystery and a bonkers thread, this is the most festive I've felt in yonks. I'm opening the Buck's Fizz.

topcat2014 · 24/12/2016 08:17

once went to a student event at Gloucester Uni misses point of thread entirely

puglife15 · 24/12/2016 08:32

The idea of 21 year olds doing a murder mystery confounds me. What's wrong with vodka, cheap weed and shagging your mates like normal people?

MoggieMaeEverso · 24/12/2016 08:39

alorsmum can't believe I forgot "further to my earlier missive" Blush

I'm going to have a glass of wine and crack out the kids Christmas Eve box while I muse on this further. I feel like we need another clue???

randomeragain · 24/12/2016 08:47

wow cool John le Carre stuff........thought it was gonna be used condoms

ThoraGruntwhistle · 24/12/2016 09:00

Look, is a member of the royal family trying to get off with your daughter or not?

roundaboutthetown · 24/12/2016 09:02

If it was left lying around after a noisy party, I would not have thought it was being taken remotely seriously.

00100001 · 24/12/2016 09:05

I just want to point out that discrete is an actual word meaning "individually separate and distinct"

Serialweightwatcher · 24/12/2016 09:07

Me thinks this thread is a bit above my station (because I've had to google a LOT), but am I correct that this is the gist:

Someone very high up in a private school or university is writing personal letters to a 'student' asking for their home address because they have shared some kind of relationship in a teacher/pupil way even though this pupil is over 20, or maybe it began a few years ago .... it just sounds so upstairs/downstairs and I'm afraid I now feel like I belong in the basement Sad

Trifleorbust · 24/12/2016 09:08

I would think most people know what discrete means Hmm

Autocorrect doesn't change discreet to discrete on my phone though Grin

Manumission · 24/12/2016 09:10

Autocorrect doesn't change discreet to discrete on my phone though

Maybe THAT is a clue!

To OP's professional role that brought her into contact with the August body herself. She sends emails about mathsy things a lot? 🤔

PhilODox · 24/12/2016 09:12

I assumed DC was a boy (perhaps my view of said august body is clouded somewhat).

Thank you seminormal
Should have known that!

Serialweightwatcher · 24/12/2016 09:12

Ooooh I've re-read and my mind is wandering more from university to more political and I whiff a scandal in the making ............. talking of making, need to do the beds because this is confusing the heck out of me now! Confused

PhilODox · 24/12/2016 09:15

OMG!!! I've just realised where the word "concrete" comes from, it's an aggregate. Thank you MN!
(I did know both meanings discreet/discrete, just never clicked before).

CalleighDoodle · 24/12/2016 09:17

Please tell me you have now woken the children fo get an update op

roundaboutthetown · 24/12/2016 09:17

No, Serialweightwatcher, a boy/young man who went to school with the OP's son has received a letter from a person who works at an important institution which accepts work experience placements from the school. A lot of the boys who get work placements there end up working there. The letter was a bit personal, not professional, and was asking for contact details and calling for discretion, and this letter was taken so seriously that it was left lying around at a party...

neveradullmoment99 · 24/12/2016 09:17

What is happening? Have I stumbled into some weird riddle?

What is this thread about exactly? Confused

neveradullmoment99 · 24/12/2016 09:18

Ah...thank you roundaboutthetown :)

glueandstick · 24/12/2016 09:20

Who has shagged someone they shouldn't have then? Clearly this is the crux of it.

(Also, august- pronounced like the month?)

Manumission · 24/12/2016 09:22

No, emphasis on the second syllable a bit like disgust.

glueandstick · 24/12/2016 09:22

And Gloucester Uni- Is that the old Gloscat or aggy college?

glueandstick · 24/12/2016 09:23

See I first read it in a haze of not had coffee yet and thought 'why the hell are they hanging on to such old letters. August was months ago'
