Prompted by another thread in which people are horrified by the fact op has spent £200 on food for 4 adults and kids for Xmas day. Made me think honestly how much I've spent.
£40 on a goose and beef
£80 on alcohol
£177 on Asda shop
£100 on m and s 'bits' and flowers.
This is for 4 adults and 2 older children for Xmas day and Boxing Day, hoping to last a few days afterwards on leftovers as well.
That's nearly £400!! That's mad isn't it.
AIBU to ask how much you have spent?

£120 to feed 11. That includes some beer but no wine as we already have it. Don't ever do turkey, don't like it particularly and they're ridiculously expensive so we have a whopper chicken instead.
It's all pre-prepped stuff too.

Goose: £15 frozen in Tesco
Bag of Maris piper spuds: £2 in asda
2 carrots, 1 parsnip an onion, and a bag of frozen broccoli: about £3?
Jar of extra special gravy: £1.50
Box of Paxo: £2 but that will do several meals
Pigs in blankets: £2

Call it a grand total of about £25, that will feed me and my 2 DS's, but could easily feed another couple of adults with the amount there will be left over.

No alcohol as it will just be the kids and I, no point doing a starter or a pudding as we just gorge on the main course instead lol.

About £80-£90. Four of us. We don't drink, which is evidence from the price I think!

Report
OohMavis · 24/12/2016 09:16

That price includes all crisps, sweets, chocolate and soft drinks too.

We drink a few nice bottles of wine, but don't eat sweets, crisps or chocolate!

£130 for Morrisons shop but paid with vouchers, so only actually paid £25.

£50 turkey from Waitrose.

So technically £75, but actual value £180 for family of 4 with 3 extras.

Just back £112 in Lidl (£45 was champagne) and £60 at the butcher. So £175 just the 4 of us but hopefully will have left overs :)

For xmas day and boxing day for 7 of us:
Goose £15 Tescos
Leg o Lamb £10 Tescos
Duck £6.99 Aldis
Linda McCartney veggie thingy: £2-ish
Booze: not sure as I bought it over the past couple of months, but probably around £60. Eldest son earns 3 times what we do so he will be buying more.
Veggies: everything 19p in Aldis
£1 frozen sprouts Iceland
Got some pickles in posh farm shop - maybe £6
Cheese from farm shop and Aldis: £15
Odds and ends like shortbread, biscuits and crackers spread over past month or two, mainly from Aldis - £3 here, £2 there...
Given the 2 teenagers £80 each, and made present for the 3 older sons. Cost varied as one present is a sample I knitted for a magazine so technically cost me nothing but took a month to knit. Others, I spent maybe £25 plus in fabric and notions.
Stocking presents: Maybe £75 in Primark and Poundland.
5 tins sweeties, one for each boy £4 each

We start in October, so haven't had to spend much this week. We won't go food shopping now til the middle of next week so that stretches the £s as well.

£100 ASDA shop, which I'm waiting for, with baited breath, as fully expecting to have to do a mad dash to get all the bits they've substituted/forgotten! That includes £35 worth of alcohol and 5 bottles of Schloer type stuff.

£40 at the butchers for lamb/turkey crown/pigs in blankets.

About £20 at Aldi over the last couple of weeks on mince pies, Christmas pudding and sauces etc.

I'm feeding 6 adults and a child for Christmas dinner but have also got some normal shopping in the ASDA lot to tide us over til new year.

We have only spent £17 on breakfast and nibbles for the evening. And £60 for going out for Christmas dinner. 2 adults and a 16 month baby

About 100 euro for everything. 3 people, 5 days worth. Nice wine/beer very cheap here luckily. TBH, it's just a bit more than normal.

Nothing yet. There's only me and I'm volunteering for Crisis at Christmas tomorrow.
I might pick up a takeaway tonight.

It's all relevant. Some people are on a budget. Some are not. Some are hosting. Some are not. Some are foodies. Some are not. These threads are completely pointless unless all the dynamics are the same.

Christmas dinner alone is £80 for 9 people without even factoring alcohol, desserts, chocs and all the other extras. Must be at least £200.

MargaretCavendish · 24/12/2016 12:50

This year we're not hosting but last year we did and I think it cost us at least £200, and that was with the in laws doing dessert and my parents bringing the cheese course. We are vegetarians but cooked a turkey for our guests so that cost a fortune as obviously we wanted to get a high welfare one.

blueskyinmarch · 24/12/2016 12:50

£80 on turkey
£120 in Tesco
£50 in Marks
£200 on alcohol (probably over bought on this but it keeps so we are not worried about that)

Got 10 adults for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. All staying the two nights so need breakfast food etc. My DM gave me £50 towards the costs and some of the guests are bringing puddings, snacks and a vegetarian main.

Including leg of lamb, alcohol, nibbles, lots of cheese and a normal weekly shop approx £150. So just over double the normal weekly shop of around £60-70.
That's for 3 of us.

Report
EatsShitAndLeaves · 24/12/2016 12:53

I'm all in at about £750 I would say.

However that's for 12 people for 3 days.

About £100 cash. £200ish in total as I had about £100 in nectar points.

In the 300 region for two of us Xmas Blush

Includes 4 meats for over a few days, loads of drink, munchie bits.
It won't get wasted so I don't mind.

£50 for 2 adults and a child for 23rd-30th December. Slightly more than I would normally spend on a week's shopping, but I did have smoked salmon and a lot of cheese in my trolley this week.

Including the next week's shopping, £60 on champagne and a load of other alcohol about £300. That's for 3 adults, and will last until the new year.

Report
justwanttoweeinpeace · 24/12/2016 13:50

70 at the butcher
60 at the deli
40 on fresh stuff this morning
90 on an online shop, 20 quid of which is things like bin liners, nappies and dishwasher tablets.

So £240 for four to last Xmas eve to the 27th.

However that doesn't include booze, which DH is in charge of, so the total could easily be doubled.

Welshrainbow · 24/12/2016 15:11

£75 including a bottle of wine and a cheap bottle of bucksfizz, includes snacks items for Boxing Day as well, there's only three of us though and we will be eating vegetarian. Seemed a lot more expensive than last year but think it's the extra gluten free items for DS.
