Mushy peas.

I know I'm right on this and dh is a loon. He wants mushy peas with Christmas dinner!

That's just all kinds of wrong.

Skirlie sounds lovely zukie

llangennith · 23/12/2016 23:14

I hate mushy peas but if someone asked for them I guess I'd serve them.

SomethingLikeFlying · 23/12/2016 23:26

Mushy peas should be illegal and there's something very wrong with anyone who would eat them.

🙋🏼 Meeee😄
Not with my Christmas dinner though... but definitely with pasties. Yum!

liz70 · 23/12/2016 23:26

God dammit I need skirlie and yorkies with our Chrimbo dinner now! Back to the Co op tomorrow. We're having:

Linda Mac Veggie Roast
Onion Gravy
Stuffing balls
Sprouts
Tinned sweetcorn
Peas (frozen garden)
Roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips, roasted in olive oil, dried herbs and seasoning,
Yorkshire puds
and Skirlie!

Yum! Xmas Smile

Dh grew up having cauliflower cheese with Christmas dinner. All fine except his mothers version was boiled cauliflower with a processed cheese slice on top Grin. He had no idea what real cauliflower cheese was and still prefers it his mothers way Confused

zukiecat · 24/12/2016 00:14

Skirlie really is very tasty, and really easy to make, you can add pepper if you like, but I prefer just salt

I forgot to add that it tastes best if the onions are just slightly burnt

Then I wrap it in tinfoil and put it in the oven for the last ten minutes or so if the tatties roasting

Boolovessulley · 24/12/2016 00:37

I went for a cavery last week and was surprised to see mushy peas.
Never had them With a Christmas dinner but I can see the appeal.
Also yes to mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding regardless of which meat we are having .

toffee1000 · 24/12/2016 02:48

Am slightly Shock at all these people who do multiple types of meat. Don't they require different cooking times?? We usually order a duck and a ham, with the duck eaten on Christmas Day and the ham another day. Admittedly there are only four of us. Although back in the day when we used to go to my grandparents' and there were 8/9 of us I don't recall multiple meats. (Of course this was several years ago so I don't really remember back that far).

FurryLittleTwerp · 24/12/2016 07:43

I don't do multiple meats for Christmas dinner either, toffee - I'm not a carvery Xmas Grin

I always cook a lump of back bacon to be eaten cold at some point (just put it on to boil now), the meat (beef this year) is big enough for there to be cold cuts & I buy a large pork pie.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 24/12/2016 07:59

We are having chips and salad with our lunch...

Don't knock it till you've tried it. Anyone I know who likes mushy peas and I've managed to convince to at least try them (and they HAVE to be the ones that you soak overnight) with their Xmas dinner has bloody loved em!!
Somehow they just go really well lol

TesticleMeElmo · 24/12/2016 18:08

NO PEAS SHOULD BE PART OF ANY DINNER, EVER

Bloody hate the nasty rancid little green balls of doom. My lovely mother used to feed them to me when I was a baby several times a week because she used to laugh each time I shuddered when I ate them apparently (cheers mum) Even the smell of them makes me boke over thirty years later 😡

iamEarthymama · 24/12/2016 21:40

Marrowfat Peas a'soaking!

Hope everyone's preparations are going well and that Christmas lunch plates will hold everything considered essential to the festive feast!

A Christmas dinner should not include ......
DonutParade · 24/12/2016 21:43

My youngest genuinely wants weetabix for Christmas dinner. So that's what the bizarre little urchin will have. She also wants mushy peas.

sansoucitherednosedcariboo · 24/12/2016 21:46

Peas are gross, mushy ones are the worst. If I could eat peas (which I can't because I'm allergic to them), I would have fresh ones cooked with mint. I think they might be nice like that.

Another thing not to have with Christmas dinner would be baked beans. Even though they're yummy.

tinydon · 25/12/2016 10:08

My Mum always did mushy peas with Christmas dinner and they were lovely... I could never get mine to taste the same. Tried butter and vinegar even tried adding a bit of sugar but nothing worked. I loved them...
Always had them with Sunday dinner too.

AcaciaYou · 25/12/2016 11:12

Have whatever you want for Christmas dinner, whatever that may be.

We are having a giant whole salmon served with beetroot and celeriac gratin.

And sprouts.

Charlie97 · 25/12/2016 12:49

I don't have mushy peas, but I do love marrofat peas cooked until they are so soft they are almost mushy

Kel1234 you and I could NEVER be friends!!! Confused

Grindelwaldswand · 25/12/2016 15:46

Mushy Peas are for bonfire night with pork pies.
