Mushy peas.

I know I'm right on this and dh is a loon. He wants mushy peas with Christmas dinner!

That's just all kinds of wrong.

Mushy peas used to be the work of the devil- until I went for Sunday dinner at my DHs parents for the first time. Being too polite to say no I just ate them and I actually felt the scales falling from my eyes!! They are just the most wonderful invention!! As a result we have them every Sunday and this one will be no different- Christmas or not!!

MerylPeril · 23/12/2016 10:46

Not have Yorkshire puddings?!?!?

I don't understand....

OpalTree · 23/12/2016 10:49

Do you mean tinned processed mushy peas or that he wants to mush normal peas? Both are wrong of course, but i remember as a non fussy eating child being given tinned mushy processed peas in infant school and being horrified by the taste. (I liked normal peas.) So tinned mushy peas are not just unreasonable but ultra unreasonable.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 23/12/2016 10:49

and don't get me started on people who have Yorkshire puddings with roast turkey

That would be me Blush it's not in the same league as mushy peas though.

I'm now thinking crispy duck with pankcakes would make a cracking starter.

OP posts:
OpalTree · 23/12/2016 10:51

In fact i am now remembering the taste and have not eaten them since about 1976.

HoHoHammered · 23/12/2016 10:51

See I don't understand not having yorkie puds on Christmas Day

It's not a roast without Yorkshire puddings!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/12/2016 10:51

It should not include x, y, z ingredient for you, OP. Other people do as they want..

Izzy24 · 23/12/2016 10:51

@Ladymonica - have you not read any of the Christmas food threads?

Cauliflower cheese is a staple!

ClashCityRocker · 23/12/2016 10:55

I quite like mushy peas on a roast.

Those acid-bright green ones that you have to shake out the can and the come out in a satisfying 'squooch' sound whilst still maintaining the the shape of the can.

Unfortunately, dh is refusing to have Brussels, mushy peas and cabbage on the same plate after one rather flatulent Boxing Day. Despite my protestations, it was not Begining To Smell A Lot Like Christmas, apparently.

Bedsheets4knickers · 23/12/2016 10:56

No way , it's either fish or faggots

MrsJayy · 23/12/2016 10:56

There is a knob etiqutte expert on this morning telling us what not to eat on Christmas day he is hilarious

CondensedMilkSarnies · 23/12/2016 10:57

Mushy peas ?????? Peas that have been mushed ??? Jesus Christ , what's the matter with people ? No one should be eating green slop .

Cauliflower cheese is the dogs !

SpringerS · 23/12/2016 11:01

YANBU. No peas at all on a Christmas or Sunday dinner.

Oh no, sweet peas mashed with a little fresh mint is delicious with Easter lamb.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 23/12/2016 11:03

I love a mushy pea, but Christmas dinner? I'm going to have to consult DH, he's Valleys' Welsh and has yet to express a desire for mushy peas with his Christmas dinner. I fear I may have been depriving him all these years.

tiej · 23/12/2016 11:06

There would be a riot in this house if yorkshire puds weren't on the menu.

givemushypeasachance · 23/12/2016 11:08

Hey, give us a chance!

CharleyDavidson · 23/12/2016 11:09

No mash
No yorkshire puddings (unless you are having beef)

No mushy peas! Ever, never mind on Christmas dinner.

DustyMaiden · 23/12/2016 11:13

Anything you want, it's Christmas except jellied eels or tripe.

limitedperiodonly · 23/12/2016 11:14

Peas are my favourite vegetable but my heart sinks when presented with mushy ones, especially with mint in them. Mint is disgusting. Sometimes I gag when brushing my teeth.

I still order fish and chips in pubs but I've resigned myself to being served mushy peas. They usually come in a little bowl instead of on the plate. This would ordinarily be another cause for the RAGE but it means that I can push them to the far end of the table where I can't see them.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 23/12/2016 11:14

No way , it's either fish or faggots

^Yes!

I also think that any kind of peas is just wrong on a Sunday/Xmas dinner. Peas are fab and go great with many things, but the idea of them swimming in gravy in my Sunday dinner? Just no.

Bedsheets4knickers · 23/12/2016 11:14

Yep Yorkshire puds a must here too

MrsJayy · 23/12/2016 11:14

NO MASH Xmas Shock really that is taking it to far

Sparlklesilverglitter · 23/12/2016 11:17

Mushy peas ?????? Peas that have been mushed ??? Jesus Christ , what's the matter with people ? No one should be eating green slop Have you honestly never heard of mushy peas? Like never ever?

A fish supper has to have mushy peas and gravy but mushy peas don't belong on a Christmas dinner

You have to have yorkshires though, made in a square tray by your Mum

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/12/2016 11:19

As far as I'm concerned, anybody can have what they like with Christmas dinner although a request for ketchup or baked beans would tax my anything goes approach. We don't have mushy peas but if I went to somebody else's and they were there, I'd certainly have some. I wonder if some of those dissing mushy peas have ever had them. They're nothing like ordinary frozen peas mashed down. They're far more like hummus (given that both are pulses cooked till really soft and then mushed up), or like a much more solid pea soup (which is basically what they are). Absolutely gorgeous with fish and chips.

We do always have frozen peas with Christmas dinner. When my children were younger, neither of them would touch sprouts, and as I was paranoid that they needed something green on the plate, I started doing peas, which they would both eat. We all like it so I've kept on with it, even though my son has now seen the light (daughter hasn't, but she does like bread sauce, so it all evens out).

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 23/12/2016 11:22

Mushy peas shouldn't exist. Or cauliflower cheese. Complete ruination of perfectly decent food items Xmas Angry.
