Mushy peas.

I know I'm right on this and dh is a loon. He wants mushy peas with Christmas dinner!

That's just all kinds of wrong.

OP posts:
Roussette · 23/12/2016 14:21

We, as a family, love brussels sprouts. That's me, the DCs, my siblings, DPs (not now alive but they did). We are just the sprout family. One of my DCs always checks "Mum, have you got LOTS of sprouts?" I'm not joking here, there are 18 of us on Christmas Day (not here thank god) and it will be a literal mountain of sprouts. I bloody love 'em.

My DH has 2 on his plate. He is a heathen. Xmas Grin

Roussette · 23/12/2016 14:23

Some of us have superior tastebuds which can taste the distinguishedness of sprouts

Xmas Grin

That's what I actually read it as initially!

TiredMumToTwo · 23/12/2016 14:26

Def no mushy peas and I know I'll probably be in the minority here but I put mashed potato in the same category.

TiredMumToTwo · 23/12/2016 14:28

Sorry - should have read other posts - glad I'm not on my own re mash - will use this thread as evidence for my delusional DH.

bilbodog · 23/12/2016 15:36

NO to mushy peas. No to cauliflower cheese. Roast potatoes and parsnips, mashed carrot and swede and red cabbage with cranberries.
BUT it is christmas - so if someone really wanted something i woukd do it - because im nice Xmas Smile

Mouseinahole · 23/12/2016 16:01

Dh is Yorkshire born and bred. He would never have either Yorkshire pudding or mushy peas with Christmas dinner! Veg for Christmas dinner here are sprouts, carrots, swede and potato mash, roast parsnips roasties and either peas (not mushy) or corn.
We also have bread sauce, cranberry sauce, two sorts of stuffing and gravy :)

Belleandarchie · 23/12/2016 16:28

Christmas dinner should be -
Turkey/beef/lamb
Pigs
stuffing balls
Roasted carrots and parsnips
Red Cabbage with cranberries
Brussels
Peas (NOT MUSHY 😷)
Loads roasties
yorkshire puds

Who needs mash with a roast dinner? I love mash... but save for Boxing day cheesy mash, gammon and pickled onions.

Mushrooms and sweetcorn? vom. Neither should be seen anywhere near gravy imo.

ZippyNeedsFeeding · 23/12/2016 16:28

In the past we've had fish and chips for Christmas dinner (bereavement shortly before Christmas, wanted it to be easy and casual, it was great!) so if the kids liked mushy peas then I'd make them. I will probably do Yorkshire puddings and make extra to be eaten cold later, liberally spread with jam. The only questions asked here are "Do we like it?" and "Do we want to have it?". None of us cares about what the "correct" thing is.

Pollyanna9 · 23/12/2016 16:32

Our Christmases have descended into something akin to dietary chaos.

I've got DD 14 with me for Xmas, DS 17 went down to his dad's yesterday. Me and DD have a lovely day organised tomorrow - theatre, ice skating in the city etc. I'm driving DD to her dad's Boxing Day as she can't take a whole week there.

We had our Xmas Day two days ago - duck, bacon wrapped stuffing, Brussells, chestnuts, heritage carrots, gravy, bread sauce, roast taters etc. Yum. For me and DD's Xmas Day on actual Xmas Day she's requested cornflake chicken, mashed sweet potatoes and tiramisu for pud!

Absolutely NO mushy peas at all although I guess I could imagine them being quite tasty with a lovely ham or gammon joint!!

OhStuffingBalls · 23/12/2016 16:32

Anything goes, I reckon although mushy peas are vile.

My MIL does a wicked Caribbean Xmas dinner - all the usual turkey/stuffing/roast potatoes & stuff but with the addition of rice and peas, fried plantain, stewed peas (spicy kidney beans), mac & cheese, avocado salad and a sweetish, spicy gravy.

Its a bloody feast of deliciousness if you're a greedy pig like moi Grin

BestIsWest · 23/12/2016 16:33

We used to have mushy peas with a Christmas dinner. Alongside Garden peas and 43 other veg. Have cut down a bit since then.

OnlyAFoolsChance · 23/12/2016 16:36

But what about the beetroot & pickles?

BrightonBelleCat · 23/12/2016 16:39

Onion rings.

My ex mother-in-law served them. Knew the marriage was doomed.

Colleague informed me yesterday that onion rings come with Christmas dinner at her mums!

HerodZackHunt · 23/12/2016 16:54

We're valleys Welsh but we must've gone to a different chapel to you lot. I can't even begin to imagine my father's face if mushy peas appeared on the table.
Having said that my granny boiled any veg for hours and hours so it was almost the same thing

Millymollymanatee · 23/12/2016 16:57

I love mushy peas, bring it on. They must be home soaked ones though, no tins or frozen allowed.

HermioneWoozle · 23/12/2016 16:57

I love mushy peas but there is no way on earth they would feature in any Christmas dinner I make. I don't even serve garden peas- too everyday and boring. Mushy peas are for fish and chips on a Friday night, not special enough for Christmas.

BestIsWest · 23/12/2016 16:58

If you're Welsh, was your cauli mashed, leaves included.

Yamadori · 23/12/2016 17:01

I'm a bit of a sweetcorn with turkey convert now - probably from having it at Thanksgiving with our American relatives.

SilenceOfTheYams · 23/12/2016 17:04

OP your husband would have been happy if he'd gone to the pub we went to for our team Christmas lunch the other week. We always go to this place near work that does a great carvery. At the end of the counter straight after the meat was a big vat of mushy peas.

PickAChew · 23/12/2016 17:05

I would generally say that Christmas dinner should be good you live, but I draw the line at mushy peas. Any peas are bad enough, but mushy ones are pretty extremely un-christmassy!

PickAChew · 23/12/2016 17:05

Food
Love
Stupid phone

PavlovianLunge · 23/12/2016 17:06

I love mushy peas, but with Christmas dinner? No. Just wrong.

Last year, out of idle curiosity, I made bread sauce. Envy < not envy

Randytortoise · 23/12/2016 17:06

I must hang my head in shame, for I Randytortoise must confess to not only having Yorkshire puddings with my turkey on Christmas day, but I also have apple sauce.

But even I draw the line at mushy peas!
