Mushy peas.

I know I'm right on this and dh is a loon. He wants mushy peas with Christmas dinner!

That's just all kinds of wrong.

Sparlkle yes I have , I was just doing a bit of pearl clutching Grin

Temporaryname137 · 23/12/2016 11:24

OK, this may be controversial, but...

Sprouts - disgusting bitter little balls of hatred
Turkey - dry nasty meat. Have a nice nut roast or mushroom wellington
Gravy - vile salty stuff that makes everything taste the same
Cabbage - see sprouts
Parsnips - you're just anaemic sweet carrots, and you can piss off
Mince pies/Christmas cake/Christmas pudding - raisins are just grapes that wasted their chance at becoming wine. And don't get me started on sultanas, peel and other rank chewy things
Trifle - no. The alcohol goes in the glass, the cake goes on a plate

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 23/12/2016 11:24

I ALWAYS have mushy peas with mine - my mum's always done them with Christmas dinner, sounds silly but it makes me feel closer to her (I live over 4 hours away from my parents). My very Northern DH treats me like a leper for it Grin

allegretto · 23/12/2016 11:25

No mushy peas - only with fish or faggots
No mashed potato - only with stew, sausages
No onion rings - never allowed at home
No Yorkshire puddings - except with roast beef
Them's the rules. No breaking them please. You only need someone to suggest grilled tomatoes instead of sprouts and there will be anarchy. Don't say you weren't warned.

And whilst we're at it - no custard on Christmas pudding. It's brandy butter or at a push, cream.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 23/12/2016 11:26

Parsnips, on the other hand... no, so much no. And putting honey on them? You can piss off - they're sickly as it is!

RedHelenB · 23/12/2016 11:28

Cant beat mushy peas, mint sauce, pie and gravy!

No reason mot to have them with your Christmas dinner, they're a vegetable after all!

Roussette · 23/12/2016 11:34

Temporary every single thing on your list are my favourites! It's a good job we're all different!

Did someone mention gravy with a fish supper or am I hallucinating?!

{fgrin]

froomeonthebroom · 23/12/2016 11:36

MIL serves sweet corn and mushrooms with hers. All kinds of wrong.

Tote · 23/12/2016 11:38

If we were at home then we would be having mushy peas! We will be having them on boxing day!

officerhinrika · 23/12/2016 11:42

Aargh, I've forgotten to get any marrowfat peas ( valleys girl) actually don't think Ocado do them. They are DS2s favourite, introduced by Granny. She always put a pack in his stocking too and now she's not here I've forgotten. Wonder if I can get him to pop to Morrisons to track some down?
I'm not bothered about them in Xmas dinner myself but as someone said upthread they are essential for Boxing Day fry up.

Roussette · 23/12/2016 11:43

But what I don't get about mushy peas is the fact they have all the shells of the peas mushed up in them and just taste of that. Tastes like paste to me!

As for mash, sweetcorn or mushrooms with christmas dinner, I'm feeling a bit nauseous!

ChocoChou · 23/12/2016 11:47

I love mushy peas Xmas Blush

everygalaxy · 23/12/2016 11:54

DH has a dangerous allergy to peas especially mushy ones. I've had to give them up completely- the things we do for love.
When he goes away I go to my parents and scoff peas Blush

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 23/12/2016 11:54

MIL serves sweet corn and mushrooms with hers. All kinds of wrong.

That is GROTESQUE. Does she hate Christmas? And people?!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2016 11:57

Are people seriously saying they haven't heard of mushy peas Confused.

And I wonder what the mushy pea haters think of dhal, which is basically just another type of pulse cooked the same way but with a bit of spice added?

Roussette · 23/12/2016 12:02

Not that keen on dhal either. Love lentils but they don't go to mush, that's probably why.

angelikacpickles · 23/12/2016 12:05

My DH has to have them too.

scampimom · 23/12/2016 12:09

DH does steamed courgettes with a roast. This is because he is a philistine.

I ended up liking them in the end tho.

Trifle is an abomination. Sugar + squelch = boak

LEELULUMPKIN · 23/12/2016 12:09

We always used to have them with our Christmas Dinner growing up in the 70s but that was because the only other veg I would eat was potatoes.

They can't be tinned ones though, if you are going to do them (and why not it's Christmas?!) they have to be those you soak overnight with a steradent tablet thingy like you put your nan's gnashers in. They are "proper" hardcore mushy peas. Tinned ones are for lightweights!

scampimom · 23/12/2016 12:10

Love peas. Hate mushy peas. Love cabbage. Hate sprouts. Whoever said they are evil balls of hatred has it spot on. I reckon there must be a gene or something so some people can taste the bitterness and others can't - why else would otherwise sane people go around insisting that sprouts are not only edible but desirably so??

My DH wants an egg on his Christmas ham because you know, haven't I ever heard of ham and eggs 🙄

OnlyAFoolsChance · 23/12/2016 12:13

Hold on... mushy peas NO.

But whoever said about pickled beetroot, why not?

Growing up beetroot and pickled onions were always available to add to our Christmas dinner :D YUM!

ImNotWhoYouThinkIAmOhNo · 23/12/2016 12:14

If your DH wants mushy peas I suggest he makes his own and keeps them well away from anyone else's plate. Win-win, surely?

I loathe the things myself.

TheDogsMother · 23/12/2016 12:19

ispymincepie Wow, now that's different ! Shock
