My daughter wants short hair

My dd is 3. She's never had her hair cut and it's diwn to her bum. Although I love it, it is difficult to manage as she hates me brushing it. I manage once every few days if I'm lucky.

She's going for her 1st haircut tomorrow and is adamant she wants it short. Now I'm happy going ahead with this, but what do you think of a pixie cut on a pre schooler?

Personally I wouldn't mind if she really wanted it as others say itll grow back

However at age 3 I'd suspect that she might see something on someone else and not fully realise what it means for her. It's very different saying she wants it all cut off to suddenly realising that she now has virtually no hair and is different to everyone else in her class, I'd imagine.

I'd get it cut shorter and if she likes that still and still wants it even shorter get it cut more the next time

I'd just be worried that she would change her mind when it's too late and be really upset and then there's not much you can do other than wait....

WhichEndIsUp · 22/12/2016 19:32

My nearly 3yo has short hair. Every so often I give it no 8 all over. It looks sooooo cute and is easy. (It stems from when I cut it really short to get rid of the shocking mullet it was growing into...and it's looks lovely).

Do it how she wants it. She has precious little say over anything at this age, if she has a desire here why not go with it? It grows back...

If her hair is down to her bum, and you take her to have it cut to a pixie cut, is there a way of donating the hair?

Sorry to go off topic....just thought it may be of interest if you hadn't thought of it already.

WhichEndIsUp · 22/12/2016 19:34

And too grown-up/mature? Weird Confused

elodie2000 · 22/12/2016 19:34

Hmm... Niece went from long blonde to pixie mouse hair in one go (hair closest to head was mousy, rest blonde) It completely changed how her face looked & was not flattering. She regretted it as it was a PITA to upkeep and she said it made her look boring. (plain?) She has grown it since & likes it much better bob length.
Depends on your DD's face shape though- short hair can be really flattering on the right person.

UnicornInDMboots · 22/12/2016 19:35

makingbaconpancakes despite having just donated money (as a friend sent his hair in to this and asked people to sponsor by sending money to the charity ) to this charity it didn't even cross my mind.
Amazing idea :)

My 5 year old DD had her bum length hair cut about 6 months ago. It's a long bob now and the daily crying from brushing and the detangling when wet has almost completely disappeared.

I miss her long hair but it's a small price to pay, she couldn't care less about the length of her hair x

tinyterrors · 22/12/2016 19:43

Given how long her hair is I'd go for a shoulder length bob first. My dd had really long hair but wanted it cut to her shoulders. She had it cut and her previously straight hair changed to wavy, almost curly, hair. A pixie cut in curly hair would be a nightmare to keep looking tidy (my hair is curly and a nightmare if it's shorter than jaw length).

As pp have said a pixie will need regular trims to stay neat which could become a pita and expensive.

This a million times this ^^ it's her hair and they don't get much control over much else. My sons growing in a ponytail. 'Like him off eastenders mam' (shaki) every weekend he has me put a bobble in to see how big his tuft is.

Cocolepew · 22/12/2016 19:57

I agree with Enid.
How weird to say a short haircut is too mature Confused

Mari50 · 22/12/2016 20:02

Aw, makes me reminisce, my DD had lovely short hair until she was about 4- not a no3 mind but I kept it short myself and she had lovely curls so it didn't matter that I couldn't cut hair for shit it just looked lovely. Then just before she started primary she decided she wanted it long. It's now down to her bum and it's a total pain in the arse. The amount of times we've been about to leave in the morning and then I realise I've not done her hair and she looks like something the cat dragged in. Would love to give her a nice short cut.

Trooperslane · 22/12/2016 20:03

@stealthpolarbear issues much? Grin

NothingMoreThanFelines · 22/12/2016 20:11

One of my DD's friends (around 2.5) has a pixie cut and it looks fantastic. She has very delicate little features and it really suits her. I'd say if your DD understands what a pixie cut looks like, go for it!

Gollygeewhizztits · 22/12/2016 20:14

Hang on, all the folk saying a pixie cut is too.much maintenance, how do they think parents cope with short hair on boys?

I was wondering this! I mean, she's three. It hardly matters whether she has perfectly styled hair every day!

Basicbrown · 22/12/2016 20:15

Just do it. Dd1 had her hair cut short when she was little because she hated me brushing it. She wanted to grow it when she got to about 5.

PebbleInTheMoonlight · 22/12/2016 20:17

@Nameforsaken I was 17 when I had my waist length hair cut to a short pixie crop (appreciate 3 is a different age but my story might still be relevant).

My hairdresser was aghast at cutting all my hair off so she started by gathering into a ponytail and cutting to shoulder length first and asked if I was still sure.

She then took it up to my chin (just at the front so I could see the effect) and asked if I was still sure. Then the whole lot came off.

Maybe the same would be a good idea with your daughter. She can then see the difference each length makes without having to imagine hair "shorter than daddy's". It may well be that she says to stop around the shoulder or chin but at least if she doesn't you know that she has some comprehension of how short her hair will be.

Ultimately it is just hair though and it sounds like shorter of some kind will be better than your current battles.

llangennith · 22/12/2016 20:21

Cut to shoulder length at first.

StrangeLookingParasite · 22/12/2016 20:57

A pixie in a 3 year old?

Yes, why not?

LotisBlue · 22/12/2016 20:57

I wish my 4 year old would let me cut her hair short, brushing and washing it is a PITA

longdiling · 22/12/2016 21:36

I think when people are talking of the upkeep of a pixie cut they mean having very regular hair cuts to keep it looking neat. My DS with short hair has to go to the barber very regularly or it looks a mess whereas his long haired sisters don't go very often at all - every few months if that. When DD2 had a bob it was somewhere in between, it didn't look messy as it grew out like short hair does.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/12/2016 21:45

DD (6) has short hair, she just gets it cut when it gets too shaggy and annoys her. It's so much less hassle, minimal brushing and head lice are much easier to manage.

People do think she is a boy though.

Nameforsaken · 22/12/2016 23:07

Thanks everyonr.

The idea of donating is fab!
Also, asking hd to cut off a length at a time is great.

I've shown her some pics of kids with bobs, anf I have a long pixie cut myself. But she's still adamant that she wants it shorter!

bandito · 22/12/2016 23:15

I can't remember asking either of my children their opinion about haircuts until they started school. The only cut they knew was 'nice and short'. Don't think they ever clocked anyone else's hair until then either

ILoveDolly · 22/12/2016 23:28

She might be surprised when it's done as three year olds aren't very good at knowing what they want. I'd get the hairdressers to cut a bob first then see how she feels
