My daughter wants short hair

My dd is 3. She's never had her hair cut and it's diwn to her bum. Although I love it, it is difficult to manage as she hates me brushing it. I manage once every few days if I'm lucky.

She's going for her 1st haircut tomorrow and is adamant she wants it short. Now I'm happy going ahead with this, but what do you think of a pixie cut on a pre schooler?

I'd let her go for the pixie cut if it's her choice. I had very short hair till I was a teenager and hated it - but it wasn't my choice.

I think it's weird that nearly all little girls these days have long hair. In the 80s pixie crops were very common.

FaFoutis · 22/12/2016 19:06

Whoever mentioned Diana , that did for my childhood. My mother had my hair cut short when I was 7 and I looked like a potato ever after. I would NEVER do that to my dd.
A girl in my DD's year has a 1930s bob with big bow clip. She looks lovely.

spidey66 · 22/12/2016 19:06

My dad variously had a bob and a layered short cut at that age and through the infants - it was lovely

I'd love to see your dad's bob, Clayhead lol

FaFoutis · 22/12/2016 19:08

her dad is grayson perry.

MrsPnut · 22/12/2016 19:09

My Dd always had short hair, variously pixie crops and short bobs until she turned 9 and then she decided to grow it out. It's currently way past her shoulders and is a nightmare. She never brushes it or washes it properly and it always looks a mess.

Aw, he must have looked so cute 😁

TiredMumToTwo · 22/12/2016 19:10

I would go with a nob with a fringe, this is what my DD had until she started getting her own ideas. She now no longer has a fringe and wants it to be long like Rupunzel although hates it when I brush out the knots - wish she still had an easy bob!!

HoHoHammered · 22/12/2016 19:10

I'm with Navy on this

Bob yes, pixie no.

Pixie cuts look too mature for a 3 year old. At least a bob still lets them look like a toddler

noeffingidea · 22/12/2016 19:11

Get it cut in a pixie cut, if that is what your daughter wants. You can always damp it down if it sticks up in the morning. As it grows out you can use little clips and hair bands to keep it neat, if she doesn't want it cut straight away (or finances don't allow it).
Be prepared for the hairdresser to be very reluctant to cut it short enough though. There seems to be an issue with girls having really short hair at the moment. This happened to me with my autistic daughter, I just didn't really end up with the cut I wanted even though I explained over and over again that I wanted it properly short to save her from stress and pain, as she has very thick hair which was very difficult to look after when it was long.

GinAndTeaForMe · 22/12/2016 19:12

I think it's important to teach her that her opinion on her appearance is the one that matters. Let her have what she wants.

GinAndTeaForMe · 22/12/2016 19:14

I am shocked at those saying it is too grown up. When did hairstyles become based on age? Absolutely ridiculous.

insancerre · 22/12/2016 19:14

Long hair is over rated
I personally don't like it on young children
Especially when they don't like it being brushed and they look like they've been dragged through a hedge

Notonthestairs · 22/12/2016 19:14

My DD had a pixie at 3 and then a bob at 5.
Both dead easy.
I like it bobbed, she has small features, vast amounts of thick hair and it really suits her but am letting her grow it long because there isnt another girl in the school with shorter hair and she wants to fit in. Unfortunately she doesnt like hair bobbles and having anything in her hair so she comes out of school looking very bedraggled.

Confused

She's 3. Why would she want to to look like a toddler?

HoHoHammered · 22/12/2016 19:16

Because 3 is still a toddler? Confused

But mind you my 3 year old has long hair so what do I know.

Imavinoops · 22/12/2016 19:18

If she is completely sure that is what she wants, has looked at some pictures and still agrees then I would think "Why not?"

It's her hair and it isn't like it won't grow back.

squoosh · 22/12/2016 19:18

I wouldn't consider a three year old to be a toddler. They don't toddle at that age.

WilliamHerschel · 22/12/2016 19:18

I wanted short hair from a young age because I found it really irritating. It was never cut shorter than a very short bob though. I'd have preferred shorter. I don't know why some people are funny about girls having short hair.

squoosh · 22/12/2016 19:18

And short hair being 'too mature' on a little girl. Just odd.

Nicknameofawesome · 22/12/2016 19:24

My DD was adamant she wanted a pixie cut from waist length hair. As it's such a difference I suggested we try a Bob for this cut and if she wanted to go shorter again we would do it next time. She got a jaw length bob and loves it and hasn't asked for a
Pixie cut since. She just wanted to not have it brushed all the time! Its easy to brush and doesn't need loads of trips to the hairdressers.

Monr0e · 22/12/2016 19:26

My DD has had a bob since she was 4. She's 6 now. For the same reasons, she hates her hair being messed with, brushed, she finds long hair to hot and itchy on her neck. I gave it a few months before actually going for it as I didn't want to do it tge first time she asked as they can be quite fickle at that age!

She loves her bob. Everytime she has her hair cut she asks for it a little bit shorter. It's currently jaw length, no fringe, so easy to maintain and she can still wear clips and bands and small ponies if she likes.

Monr0e · 22/12/2016 19:27

Too hot! Hmm

Beeziekn33ze · 22/12/2016 19:31

Dear OP, do what you think! After all, it'll grow!
The first time I made that point was to a sobbing friend whose teenage daughter had gone to uni and came home a few weeks later with purple hair on one side and the rest shaved off!
