To think cards with the recipient named on the front are common?

Class issue alert: inflammatory if you are bothered by that sort of thing

I was told that cards with 'To my wife/Grandad/Auntie' on the front were considered a bit non-U.

AIBU to go on thinking they're still a dead giveaway of background? Or are they OK?

Intrigued as to what the title was before it was changed Confused

shoppingandclueless · 20/12/2016 21:44

I'm not British and from a country that is nowhere near as class-obsessed as the UK but still find that type of card really tacky and common.

dingdongthewitchishere · 20/12/2016 21:44

As I am unlikely to marry into the Royal Family and to commit an atrocity by sending a "to the best Granny" card to the Queen, I am puzzled why anyone would care.

Do tell us where you stand on these masterpieces:

I've only just seen this thread. What was the original title?
I'd never thought about it but now I will and wonder if this another thing to worry about as a foreigner navigating the bizarre, obscure and frankly, bonkers class system that apparently "no longer exists". Sigh.

haveacupoftea · 20/12/2016 21:47

I read that wiki link, congratulating myself on being U, when I read that the working class use the same phrases as U, how disappointing to find out I am not U, I am not even non-U Xmas Sad

I shall call myself 'WC'

shinynewusername · 20/12/2016 21:49

The original title had a (TIC) trigger warning which some posters felt should be reserved for posts that might really trigger distress.

Also, trigger warnings are very non-U as the upper classes believe in being offensively bracingly frank at all times Wink

Namechangeemergency · 20/12/2016 21:50

OP you do realise that you are non-u don't you u ?

The Mitfords would think you terribly vulgar.

AddToBasket · 20/12/2016 21:50

The original thread title included a 'trigger warning' at the start for comic effect.

I accept that this may not be considered comic by some.

I hate the "special Daughter-in-Law" cards. I think it takes far more thought to pick out a card that is really suited to the individual concerned, rather than any old card that correctly states your relationship to the recipient. Thousands of people are receiving exactly the same card, saying they are "A special Nan" or whatever. What's so special about that? Are all Nans the same?

My exMiL would totally disagree, though. She actually cried real tears the one time I tried to show a bit of initiative and picked (what I thought was) a really nice birthday card with her favourite flowers on. "You couldn't even be bothered to choose me a card that says Nanny! It doesn't even have a verse!!" Back to the "Special Nanny" shit cards the following year.

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/12/2016 21:52

'trigger warnings are very non-U as the upper classes believe in being offensively bracingly frank at all times'

Yes they do!They're all 'I was buggered senseless at Eton and it didn't do me any harm'.

Tabbylady · 20/12/2016 21:53

Eh? Must be non-U for not getting this.

I don't like those sort of cards. Think they're a bit naff- often very floral, with twee poems. I'd rather have something that raised a bit of a laugh, or is a nice picture I can display for a while.

I would not be offended if someone bought me one though!

I did, however, once get a hilarious card (made on moonpig or similar) from a distant relation who I'd just met that year and got on well with. "To my dear third cousin twice removed, on our mothers' sides" She'd made a hilarious poem inside about how we shared as much DNA as randoms on the bus, but we woz still famileee. Made me smile anyway.

I presume not previously knowing this cousin existed due to lack of family tree painted in the Great Hall is very non-U....

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/12/2016 21:54

"You couldn't even be bothered to choose me a card that says Nanny! It doesn't even have a verse!!"

Grin

Who reads the verse inside cards?!

ScruffyTheJanitor · 20/12/2016 21:56

This ius why all my cards simply say,
"To Insert class Cunt*
Eg:

"To posh cunt"
Or
"To scum cunt"
Or rarely
"To upper class wannabe but actually middle class scum cunt"

Its much easier and far more offensive than simply,
"To Auntie"

GrumpyDullard · 20/12/2016 21:58

Mitzy my exMiL, that's who, usually with tears in her eyes (she's very prone to tears when reading cards, whatever emotion they provoke).

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/12/2016 21:59

It's an oldie but a goodie. Not the cunt/aunt, although they might be oldies, but the card.

PutDownThatLaptop · 20/12/2016 22:00

I absolutely love the fact that DH's parents send my sons cards with 'grandson' or 'grandchild' on, because they are not related to them (step grandchildren) and I think it shows how they have accepted them into their family alongside their related grandchildren.

Puppymouse · 20/12/2016 22:00

I'm ashamed to say I'm with you OP. DH has bought many a "TO MY WIFE" card for me over the years. I love that he's proud to call me that but I'm fairly sure I already understand the name given to my half of our partnership Grin

SausageSoda · 20/12/2016 22:01

I got cards which said 'grandparents' on to send from DD and I'm quite posh Smile

RB68 · 20/12/2016 22:02

Thanks for the giggle folks.

God the discussions over what and pardon

The selection of cards - my ex MIL used to spend over 100 quid in card shops at christmas to select appropriate cards for all relatives - I was like WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT we buy a pack and send it - if you are lucky the pack has glitter too....

Bloody cutlery and side plates, napkins linen vs paper shall I go on

Crunchymum · 20/12/2016 22:04

3rd thread title change????

1horatio · 20/12/2016 22:04

We use animal charity cards...

However, these offensive cards posted above? Simply fabulous. I hope we can use one of those next year!

AddToBasket · 20/12/2016 22:04

The 'Smack My Bitch Up' one is totally U and could grace the finest inglenook.

Starsandcars9 · 20/12/2016 22:10
