WIBU to leave 10 year old at home with his nan while the rest of us go to Florida?

10 year old son has caught a nasty bug and he is pretty much in bed 24/7 and has been for a couple of days. He has been having lots of fluids but has the full d & v. He is ok though but no way is he ok to come away. We rarely go on big holidays but do go to somewhere in Europe every year. We are going to Orlando for Christmas I have 5 children and I think it will be really magical. He is very close to my nan and they spend a lot of time together. The last thing I want to do is leave him but I do have 4 other children that cannot wait for this holiday and I don't really know what to do. WIBU to go away with other children and leave him here with his nan?

Jeez people.

The OP has said this is all a panic and last minute trying to work out what's best for everyone. It's normal in those circumstances to post quickly.

Read and move on or read and post.

I think that's the best option user. Sending your mum and then you and Ds join them.

Hope it works out OP.
Sounds a horrific year for you all.

I hope your new plans fall into place easily OP.

Don't do it. Just don't.

cornflowerblu · 20/12/2016 09:46

I'm sorry I didn't read the whole post which was my mistake. I didn't realise you had a bereavement so I'm sorry about that. You can claim on insurance. We had to cancel a holiday at the last minute due to bereavement and the insurance company made it as difficult as they could to refund us. The airline refunded us every penny with no questions asked on the spot. The insurance company were a nightmare and kept asking for more and more documents and the whole process ended up taking about 4 months to get the money back.

crumpetsforteaa · 20/12/2016 09:46

Good luck getting the money back.

crumpetsforteaa · 20/12/2016 09:50

Sorry for your loss OP Flowers

I was ill last year and couldn't travel though the doctor deemed I technically could so lost all our money. Bastards.

NancyDonahue · 20/12/2016 09:51

What an awful situation. I hope you manage to work something out. If it was me I think I'd try and move the holiday to Easter. I'm terrified of vomiting (myself and others!) and couldn't bear the thought of dealing with that away from home.

Hulababy · 20/12/2016 09:53

There are still flights available on Thursday and Friday.
It would be worth costing them online and then calling them as you will need a funny combination - 1 adult return, 1 child single. Though they may be able to do the child single as a 'change of flight' of his original flight.

FauxFox · 20/12/2016 09:54

Good Luck OP - everything crossed that he's better from now on and you can get the flights you need x

welshweasel · 20/12/2016 09:56

Speak to your insurance company and they will sort it all for you. If you go with your latest plan you'd have to buy your mum a ticket but the insurance should cover changing the dates of your flights. I've had to claim on insurance a few times for illness/injury and it's always been straightforward. Make sure you do it asap as they usually have specific forms that the GP needs to sign. If you speak to BA directly they may be able to help (especially in view of your circumstances and it being xmas)

AnaG1ypta · 20/12/2016 09:58

When you send docs in for insurance claim make copies first, even just photographs. Our insurance claimed they'd never received them. We ended up getting the money back 4 years later - obviously they'd misfiled the documents we'd sent and then they found them!

Zippidydoodah · 20/12/2016 10:00

What a horrible and unfortunate situation, op. Hope you get sorted one way or another and hope you all enjoy your christmas as much as possible in the circumstances. Flowers

Hulababy · 20/12/2016 10:01

Also one thing to remember to send, if your mum is taking the other children:

Write a letter for her to carry to say who she is in relation to your children, where they are going and why (holiday) and that you give her permission to take them out of the country.

Just incase. Though in our experience they didn't ask for clarification on the way out, but they did on the way home.

GentleOnMyMind · 20/12/2016 10:04

Just wanted to say good luck Flowers I hope everything works out for you and your family.

dowhatnow · 20/12/2016 10:05

Bless you op. Some people have been disgusting in their posts.
On one hand you have 4 excited children you dont want to let down, on the other you have a sick child. It's a no win situation.

Good luck with the insurance company.

BumWad · 20/12/2016 10:05

Praying it gets sorted for you Flowers

dowhatnow · 20/12/2016 10:09

Fingers crossed none of the rest if you have caught it from him. It will be miserable stuck in a hotel room, although with two adults you can take it on turns to go out with the healthy kids.

LynetteScavo · 20/12/2016 10:11

Sending your mum with other DC first sounds ideal - really hope you can get names changed. Good luck!

YelloDraw · 20/12/2016 10:13

You mum will need the USA waiver don't forget!

YelloDraw · 20/12/2016 10:13

That's was meant to say visa waiver

user1482217471 · 20/12/2016 10:16

Oh my god, I forgot all about that

She needs the ESTA? I think that took 2 days? I may be wrong got so much paperwork. This is going to be a bloody disaster I can just see it.

Getting the flights moved would be the best thing. So we could all go when he is better but I think that will be harder to claim back.
