That's it really.

I'm interested in your opinion.

No the cost of living in the North is a lot cheaper though, but then the wages are (I'm thinking of Newcastle where my 'Southern' friend moved and married a Northerner, well more a Midlands person & couldn't get anything job wide for months despite being very smart and able & then only got a minimum wage one). Anyone who thinks they're better than anyone else isn't worth knowing imho. But then I'm not from a particularly nice part of Kent anyway!

mumindoghouse · 20/12/2016 21:02

YANVU. Where u live is geography. Just that. I'm born n bred South but all my remaining family are in the beautiful North. I don't know anyone down Sarf that thinks that.

CathyODermie · 20/12/2016 21:05

Well what a cheery Christmas thread this is. Anyone who thinks they're better than someone else because of where they live is quite rude. But equally, anyone who suggests that people who live somewhere think others living elsewhere are not as good, are also very rude.
Confused? Yep, so am I.

Clarabellb · 20/12/2016 21:05

In my experience most people don't, the ones who do are usually the scummy ones anyway and are just trying to feel better than someone else Xmas Shock

EatsShitAndLeaves · 20/12/2016 21:25

Limited re: Though you're a midlander with an RP accent, aren't you OP? That must have been hard.

Yes - it's been a real burden...

Did anyone else think that the 'Watford Gap' started on the border of... Watford?

BratFarrarsPony · 20/12/2016 21:37

no because of Watford Gap services and the Watford locks on the Grand Union. but then I am a bit geeky like that.

Ricekrispiesquare · 20/12/2016 21:40

brat

You've confused me even more Grin

BratFarrarsPony · 20/12/2016 21:41

...also come from South Herts which helps I suppose....Grin

BratFarrarsPony · 20/12/2016 21:43

OK Krispies, there is Watford the town in south Hertfordshire, then there is Watford the village in Northamptonshire, from which the Watford Gap gets its name. The Watford Gap is a flat area between two hills where the trainline, the M1 motorway, the A1, and the Grand Union Canal all pass through. There is also a service station there called 'the Watford Gap Services'.

Biscuit
TippyT · 20/12/2016 22:07

I should also add as an extreme Southerner born in Cornwall at the furthest point that we are different to northerners that's all

EatsShitAndLeaves · 20/12/2016 23:18

Well on a positive front I've surely got enough biscuits to last me through the Christmas holidays Grin

Those living in London are better than those living on the north, but then we are also better than those living further south. Londoners are just superior.

tangerino · 21/12/2016 00:50

I haven't read the whole thread- apologies, this must have been said before- but I find the assumption that London is stuffed only with people on super-high incomes incredibly frustrating. We have some of the poorest people in the country and an incredibly diverse mix (in terms of income, race, religion, you name it). Anyone who sees all Londoners as lording it over others is simply wrong.

That said, London is obviously superior to all other places. And Yorkshire and Scotland. London, Yorkshire and Scotland should form an independent state, and I will be its queen Grin

scaredoffallout · 21/12/2016 06:06

When I lived in the north I had a work colleague who used to get me to say, 'Get out of my pub!' I'm back in East London now thankfully

Absolutely this. It's just as stupid as people thinking everyone 'up north' has racing pigeons and flat caps.

38cody · 21/12/2016 11:23

You mean you don't? Wow!

dollydaydream114 · 21/12/2016 11:42

I'm a southerner who has lived in the north for 15 years. In my experience there are some southerners who like to moan about northerners, and some northerners who like to moan about southerners, and the moaners at each end of the nation are small-minded pricks.

Happily, they are also very much in the minority. Most southerners wouldn't dream of making weird judgements about the north and most northerners wouldn't dream of making weird judgements about the south. All regions have idiots but they aren't representative at all.

3BusyBabies · 21/12/2016 11:48

Of course they do. My accent is not particularly strong (it wasn't to begin with) but I've had ignorant predjudice for the last 20 years that I've lived 'down south'. The digs and pathetic repetitive jokes still grate but I'm used to them. Sometimes though it's just downright nasty. I live in a particularly beautiful part of the south, am married to a southerner and now have three beautiful southern kids. My husband and I have both worked hard for every single thing we own yet it doesn't stop single-minded people presuming I don't own my home or that I claim benefits just because of where I'm from. I'm pretty sure most people think that the north of England is just one gigantic and very rough housing estate!!!

NathanBarleyrocks · 21/12/2016 11:48

There are decent places & shitholes in every city in the country. I'm from 'The North' and couldn't believe the poverty in many areas of London.

MsHooliesCardigan · 21/12/2016 11:52

Nathan there are no poor people in London, we're all bankers dontcha know?🥂

SapphireStrange · 21/12/2016 11:53

38, do you mean me, as in I'm from the north but amazingly don't have a flat cap or pigeons?

How very dare you! Wink Grin I am a transplanted Midlander Londoner. In fact I'm almost definitely, these days, part of the liberal, affluent, hand-wringing, bleeding-heart (delete or add, as takes your fancy) metropolitan elite.

PleaseNoMoreMinecraft · 21/12/2016 12:00

Never heard anything against anyone from the North! How bizarre! What are your experiences then?

PleaseNoMoreMinecraft · 21/12/2016 12:01

By the way, I'm an NHS worker (yes, the south has them too, and on the same pay as in the north) not a banker.
