That's it really.

I'm interested in your opinion.

^^ for other reasons though, right user? Wink

Alleycat1 · 20/12/2016 18:12

Well, northerners clearly think the south, not necessarily southerners, is better. Loads retire down here and we are getting full up! Can't move for people from Yorkshire who keep telling us how great it is "Ooop north" .

slummamumma · 20/12/2016 18:15

Got to be a wind up surely?! south here but some family from Yorkshire... have never ever considered either better. Know about the jokes re NE and coats but... (I am a wuss!)

Angelasw · 20/12/2016 18:16

You are right but not all southerners think it, just the loud, bratty, inexperienced of life, stuck up types .

I'm not English and have lived in London, Manchester and Birmingham, briefly in Liverpool.

Living in London and loving it but loved B'ham and esp Manchester. At certain point I asked to stay in Manchester , giving London as 2nd choice!

It's like Welsh - often looked down on too.

Really annoys me - the type who do the looking down. Superiority complex types who usually haven't been near the north!

slummamumma · 20/12/2016 18:17

btw my dad grew up in south with an outside loo ...

FearandLoathinginLasVegas · 20/12/2016 18:24

Too general to be worth debating.
You can make the argument for anywhere (including up north)..
People in York, Harrogate or Edinburgh think they are better than those in Leeds, Sheffield or Glasgow...

It won't take you long to find a local in Cornwall who will happily slag off a Londoner for hours.
But ultimately you get people who think they are better than others in the North and the South..

witchkat72 · 20/12/2016 18:25

I'm from the south and have moved up north, I have been accepted into the north particularly by my northern husband Xmas Wink thank goodness, I'm considered posh apparently because I have my own teeth Grin. Saying that I'm usually mimicked by him and his fellow friends for sounding cockney and usually greeted with 'cor blimey guvner' and so on! I cant say other than friendly banter regarding my accent, any hostility because of where I am from.
My husband does often say how more privileged the south is compared to the north and how the area we live was hit hard in the Thatcher years ( live in a previously lucrative mining community)

ghostspirit · 20/12/2016 18:25

That people in the south think they are better than those in the north

i dont think, i know im better... im better than everyone. im bloody fantastic.

Jayfee · 20/12/2016 18:34

i havent read all the posts. as a southerner i found that some people not from south...london...are inverted snobs. i dont have any feelings of superiority

VacantExpression · 20/12/2016 18:43

I think I am "better" than people that don't pick up their dog's shit. That is the sole yardstick I have used to measure my "betterness" today.

murakamilove · 20/12/2016 18:52

Why should anyone think of themselves as better? Or worse?
Never thought about this?

murakamilove · 20/12/2016 18:53

I like VacantExpression's measure - I'm betterer because I do pick up my Dog's shit!

lilypoppet · 20/12/2016 19:01

When I lived in the north I had a work colleague who used to get me to say, 'Get out of my pub!' I'm back in East London now thankfully

Spadequeen · 20/12/2016 19:15

Op, you get northern dicks, you get southern dicks. Dicks are dicks, nothing to do with southerners or northerners!

Tapandgo · 20/12/2016 19:19

In the south of where?

Shockers · 20/12/2016 19:23

I'm from the NW, witchkat72, and have all of my own teeth... so do all of my friends Confused.

myshinynewusername · 20/12/2016 19:28

"Londoner's largely keep quiet about other places because we know that as soon as we open our mouths we'll be slated as being part of some elite who think we're a better. A large number of Brexit Leave votes were about teaching London a lesson. People didn't even care if they ended up being worse off as long as they could give 'London' a kick. So many seem to be negatively obsessed with London whilst us Londoner's, the vast majority of whom are just normal people in normal jobs get on with our lives and don't have time to spend wondering what the people of Scarborough or wherever thinks of us"

Yeah, we really weren't capable of grasping the intricacies of the Leave v Remain arguments. so we just decided to give London a kicking. Hmm

frogsgoladidahdidah · 20/12/2016 19:33

To quote a book I once read, 'all southerners eat in pret a manger, and all northerner go to Greggs'.

I'll take that, Greggs is always our first port of call at arrivals, in Newcastle Airport. (Munches on a cheese and onion pasty). 🐽

Destinysdaughter · 20/12/2016 19:37

Great video about ' The North' ( well, Yorkshire anyway...!) Xmas Smile

What I always find strange about these threads is how the OP and people such as wasonthelist can never understand that they are causing offence.

That's probably because northerners are blunt and southerners beat around the bush. Though you're a midlander with an RP accent, aren't you OP? That must have been hard.

Eolian · 20/12/2016 19:47

I'm a southerner living in the north. I've not really seen any anti-northerner attitudes down south, but have definitely seen the opposite. I find it really irritating that to many northerners a southern accent means you're posh. I mean, how bloody illogical is that?! So everyone living south of a certain arbitrary point is posh, regardless of how poor, disadvantaged or just generally normal they are? It's just so staggeringly ignorant!

Jaxhog · 20/12/2016 19:51

I've lived in the North and the South. Both have snobs, and both have lovely people I'm friends with. People are people.

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 20/12/2016 19:53

I love the comments about southern accents sounding posh Grin I'm from the most south-easterly point of England and I sound common as muck!

JassyRadlett · 20/12/2016 20:27

I am pretty sure without having a conversation with you that if you like living in London you wouldn't like it where I live

A bit late with this one - but don't be so sure. I grew up in another country where my nearest neighbour was half an hour's drive away. I now live in London.

I really love living in both places, though there are drawbacks to each.

People are complicated buggers. Smile

falange · 20/12/2016 20:29

I live in the north. I used to live in London. I don't mind proppa Cockerny types. I can't stand Essex/Hertfordshire dripping in designer label types. Rest of the south passes me by, couldn't care less about them. All of the northern peoples are ok apart from scousers. That's it really.
