AIBU to wonder if people really wait until Christmas Day?

We have sent some Christmas presents that have arrived with family. Only very little things, nothing grant or expensive. Received a text to say "they're under the tree, can't wait to open them on Christmas Day" and I wondered if people ever actually wait till Christmas Day?! worried they'll be really disappointed as it's just a shower gel and lip balm set for the girls and chocolates for their parents. Would prefer if they opened now so didn't get excited about what was inside!

All gifts from people outside our household got under the tree for Christmas day the only exception is selection boxes from school/footie but they aren't wrapped so we don't really treat like presents in the same way.

HaveNoSocks · 18/12/2016 20:06

I wait because it's nice to have presents under the tree and lots to open on xmas day not because I'm expecting something extravagant.

Supermagicsmile · 18/12/2016 20:39

It's just me who worries my gifts that I have sent to people are not Christmas Day worthy then! Blush

Presents sent to us are put under the tree to be opened on Christmas day. They would never be opened before that.

HibernoCaledonian · 18/12/2016 20:48

Growing up we used to wait until the year I got sent a beautiful kid's vanity set. The comb and mirror had shattered in transit.

Apart from being disappointed I almost reefed myself on mirror shards. That year my parents decided that my brother and I could open any presents received in the post when they arrived from them on.

WankersHacksandThieves · 18/12/2016 20:53

I generally wait and any gifts (usually envelopes with money) that DSs get go under the tree too. I would expect people I send gifts to to wait also. I have one great niece (about age 7 now) who always manages to "accidentally" rip the paper and then has to open it on arrival :o I really don't mind as I usually send Pj's or onesie or dressing gown with a small toy and a piece of chocolate or sweetie and I get a lovely photo of her wearing the item messaged through to me. It saves her mum buying something new for Christmas Eve.

This year another DN and my DGNephew will be away from home for Christmas so I said she should feel free to open before they go.

Willow2016 · 18/12/2016 22:29

CHristmas gifts are for Christmas Day unless you are having a get together with family/they need to open them early for a reason prior to Xmas day.

Ours all go under the tree (plus the ones we are giving out until they are handed over) and not opened until Xmas morning.

Must be pretty boring on Xmas morning if half the pressies have already been opened!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/12/2016 22:34

Depends how I feel. I open birthday presents early too sometimes. That's the joy of being a grown up, I can decide what to doGrin

SalemSaberhagen · 18/12/2016 22:40

I do 2 of those 3 things sausage Blush

I save my presents for Christmas Day though!

TesticleMeElmo · 19/12/2016 17:56

Of course people wait! Every year my line manager buys all her staff a tube of Christmas sweets (think munchies or similar) We ALL know what's inside the wrapping, everyone gets the same - but mine still get left until Christmas Day. It's one more present to open (after I've spoilt everyone else and have run out of presents and everyone else has about twenty each still to open...)

Petronius16 · 19/12/2016 18:01

If you open before Christmas Day, then Santa doesn't bring anything next year. I thought everyone knew that! Wink We're old so we know about such things.

suzy2b · 19/12/2016 18:04

don't open anything until christmas day santa brings all the presents children never see a wrapped present

SestraClone · 19/12/2016 18:07

We never open them early Shock. The only one I have opened was a Secret Santa gift, because we all did it together as a group on our night out.

Crumbs1 · 19/12/2016 18:08

Christmas presents under the tree unless.....in opening it in front of elderly relative/kindly neighbour/godparent would bring giver significant pleasure. Written thank you notes for all presents including the face flannel, the used jigsaw and small items unless opened in front of giver and appropriate level of enthusiasm and gratitude shown.

notangelinajolie · 19/12/2016 18:09

Christmas presents = Christmas Day. It would be rude to open them before.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/12/2016 18:10

Rude?Grin

Cutesbabasmummy · 19/12/2016 18:16

Definitely wait until the day!

TheSlaughterOfTheMortificados · 19/12/2016 18:31

I always wait. Why not?

ChocChocPorridge · 19/12/2016 18:35

If someone came and visited to bring presents, then I'd ask them if they'd like the kids to open them now - just because part of the joy is seeing someone open a present.

Postal ones though, they go under the tree, but I don't ration them out like I do the ones from DP and me - they're allowed to open them in a frenzy when they wake up (I ration out the others to maintain some excitement thoughout the day)

MarjorieSimpson · 19/12/2016 18:37

We wait for anything that my PIL have given us (for us and the dcs).
When I was a child and we were getting stuff from grand parents through the post, we never waited.

Conclusion: different families, different ways of doing things. Both work.

Satisfactorylemon · 19/12/2016 18:38

Ugh of course they bloody wait til 25th Hmm

crumpetsforteaa · 19/12/2016 18:42

Before Christmas? Surely not. Then again I dislike it when random in laws make too wait until some day after Christmas so they can 'see your face' leave me alone AngryAngry

Sara107 · 19/12/2016 19:14

It's nice to wait. They will have the excitement and anticipation of seeing those parcels under the tree every day and then - at last able to rip the paper off! I doubt they will be disappointed, they will probably have lots of other pressies as well and yours will just add to the fun.

bluechameleon · 19/12/2016 19:34

I opened my secret santa and a couple of gifts from my students on Friday, and we did our Christmas celebration with the ILs on Sunday so opened lots of presents then. We'll do some of DS's in the couple of days before Christmas I think because I don't want to take the bigger ones away with us. So no strict waiting for the day here.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/12/2016 19:42

Baby Jesus doesn't give a special badge to those that waitGrin
