AIBU to wonder if people really wait until Christmas Day?

We have sent some Christmas presents that have arrived with family. Only very little things, nothing grant or expensive. Received a text to say "they're under the tree, can't wait to open them on Christmas Day" and I wondered if people ever actually wait till Christmas Day?! worried they'll be really disappointed as it's just a shower gel and lip balm set for the girls and chocolates for their parents. Would prefer if they opened now so didn't get excited about what was inside!

I would have thought a small present would be better opened on Christmas Day as it becomes part of a larger picture.
Open a token gift early would make it seem smaller if anything I would have thought.

NickMarlow · 18/12/2016 16:31

We not only wait until Christmas Day, but after church on Christmas day. Stockings as soon as dd wakes up though.

This year, I am seriously tempted to let dd have some early. She has chickenpox and I am already tearing my hair out trying to entertain her, with a pile of new toys sitting upstairs....!

MistressMerryWeather · 18/12/2016 16:34

I was joking too.

As in you steal all the Creme eggs?

MrEBear · 18/12/2016 16:35

I'd wait until Christmas, actually in my house they'd be hidden out of the way of pokers, prying eyes and shakers, they'd appear on Christmas morning. Giving the impression that they had been delivered by Santa (not from him but delivered by him).

Even if everyone is too old for Santa I still like the magic of a bundle just appearing rather than it slowly growing.

I always keep them til Christmas.

If its just something small, then all the more reason to leave it for the fun of the day. There's no rush to instantly get my hands on lip balm and chocolate, after all.

BertieBotts · 18/12/2016 17:13

Nick I think you have a good excuse! Especially if she is little and the only child.

I like the present pile to grow, too :)

HSMMaCM · 18/12/2016 17:27

Under the tree for Christmas day here too.

GreenShadow · 18/12/2016 17:30

Of course we wait until Christmas Day!
That's partly why I find gift bags a bit sad, as you've already seen what's in it.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 18/12/2016 17:31

We wait. Why open them before.

YouHadMeAtCake · 18/12/2016 17:38

Some people do, my friends don't seem to wait. We are in a different country a long way from UK and so I order all gifts online. They've nearly all opened them as they've arrived, which annoys me. I find it sad they can't wait, especially with children watching, but I know it is up to them. Family mainly wait it seems.

My MIL opens her birthday card and gifts as they arrive so I try to get them to arrive as close to the day as possible. My SIL doesn't even usually acknowledge a gift whereas my sister lets me know it's arrived right away and says thank you and waits til the day.

LightDrizzle · 18/12/2016 17:39

Growing up we never opened presents before Christmas Day, now we each open one on Christmas Eve too, my youngest opens more on Christmas Eve because she gets loads from school and gets bored of opening so we break it up (she has severe global delay due to bulbar palsy).

I've always been good at delayed gratification!

Mouseinahole · 18/12/2016 17:40

We save almost everything for Christmas Day but open one each after church on Christmas Eve.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 18/12/2016 17:43

We have sent presents to family in Australia and can't wait to FaceTime them ( on our xmas eve, there Christmas morning) to see them open their gifts, it's nothing special as it cost so much to send but it's the fun of sending and receiving for us, I never open gifts till Christmas Day. I don't open birthday presents until it's my birthday either..... just seems a bit Confused

NickMarlow · 18/12/2016 17:48

Bertie she's nearly 2 and we were already planning to space them out! Think i'll save the family ones but let her have a couple of the ones from friends.

We normally put our presents under the tree on Christmas Eve, I love the anticipation!

Muddlingalongalone · 18/12/2016 18:09

Majority of ours are left for Christmas day but there was an expectation that I opened my secret Santa present at lunch & we were with a very dear friend yesterday & I let the girls open their presents firstly so she got to see them open them & secondly so that we could get rid of the horrendous excess packaging.
Each to their own I say but I personally like to see the pile grow. I also fill my car with pressies and cart them miles but my dd's are only 5 & 2 so may revise as they get older

TheDisreputableDog · 18/12/2016 18:16

So weird... Christmas presents are for Christmas, so you open them when you are celebrating Christmas. Only exception would be something like Secret Santa when the fun is in seeing people open their presents.
Any presents received before Christmas are saved for the big day, any received afterwards are fair game

strawberrypenguin · 18/12/2016 18:19

They go under the tree or are hidden here too. They are Christmas presents and waiting is part of he fun of Christmas

Why would you open them early?!

In this house presents are put under the tree for Christmas day. Never allowed to open them straight away unless actually with the person giving them and swapped gifts and both open them. Even 3 year old DS is told presents go under the tree - even ones from visiting Santa's grotto he has to wait till later in the day when sitting nicely etc. It seems terribly grabby and rude to rip the paper off straight away! Visiting Santa with friends today and I was Shock at the kids getting their presents and not waiting even a second to sit down in cafe or asking parents just tearing them open right there standing outside and parents not saying anything! Christmas presents are for Christmas Day!!!

Marmalade85 · 18/12/2016 18:47

I open as I receive

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2016 18:53

We always wait until Xmas day too, unless there is a reason to do it earlier like not being there, then we always wait. I'm surprised anyone doesn't.

Are you not faking it by sending a text Xmas morning to say thanks, pretending you're waiting? 🙄

VimFuego101 · 18/12/2016 18:55

We keep anything that's sent in the post till Christmas Day.

If we were given gifts in person (unlikely as we live a long way away from family) I would open them at the time, I assume the giver would want to see that you liked them.

SausageD0g · 18/12/2016 19:22

Gosh I naiively thought everyone waited!

But then until mn I never imagined people ate supermarket food before buying it,....
Or wiped after standing up...
Or so many couldn't do a bra up behind and swivelled it round...

SantasJockstrap · 18/12/2016 20:02

we wait
