AIBU to wonder if people really wait until Christmas Day?

We have sent some Christmas presents that have arrived with family. Only very little things, nothing grant or expensive. Received a text to say "they're under the tree, can't wait to open them on Christmas Day" and I wondered if people ever actually wait till Christmas Day?! worried they'll be really disappointed as it's just a shower gel and lip balm set for the girls and chocolates for their parents. Would prefer if they opened now so didn't get excited about what was inside!

Good grief! No!!

Presents given before the day are placed under the tree or hidden upstairs away from prying eyes.

That's just all sorts of wrong!

ExcellentWorkThereMary · 18/12/2016 15:33

Everything goes under the tree! Presents kids bring home from school, stuff sent in post, novelty gifts from friends etc. Unless otherwise specified (secret Santa where we all open together, for example).

I wouldn't open a Christmas present before Christmas Day...

EatTheCake · 18/12/2016 15:34

Yes we wait until it's actually Christmas Day because they are Christmas presents.

I love the un wrapping of anything Christmas morning as do the DC. I don't mind a few bottles of shower gel etc it saves me remembering to by it a few weeks after Christmas and it's nice to know the family member/friend has thought enough to send something even if just a token gift

AllTheBabies · 18/12/2016 15:34

Of course you don't open them!

The only exception I can think of is secret santa presents where opening them is a event shared with the others taking part.

anyoldname76 · 18/12/2016 15:34

any presents we get go under the tree ready to open on Christmas day, it would feel wrong to open any before

bloodyteenagers · 18/12/2016 15:34

It's not December 25th.
The only time presents get open other than the 25th is if someone has a birthday in December and they are birthday presents.
I have presents given to me as far back as November. That would be well weird. Opening Christmas presents on bonfire night.

PumpkinPie71 · 18/12/2016 15:36

Why would you open them? Christmas is the 25th not before!

Talk about suck the fun out of Christmas morning. The joy of Christmas morning is un wrapping a load of stuff while stuffing a thortons snowman!

I don't think it's ok to say well it's nothing grand I've been set so I can open it now, it's still for Christmas and it's not Christmas

Mol1628 · 18/12/2016 15:39

Nothing opened before Christmas Day here.

user1481916344 · 18/12/2016 15:41

Why would you open them? Christmas is the 25th not before!

Not everyone does xmas on the 25th.

Trills · 18/12/2016 15:43

If I'm with someone and we are exchanging gifts in person, we might open them at the time, or we might agree to take them away.

Anything that came in the post would definitely wait til Christmas day.

Gutted2016 · 18/12/2016 15:43

My DS has woken up every morning screaming "Ten/nine/eight etc days to go!" the excitement is so lovely to see.

I could just say well actually sod all that, let's just open them now. Wouldn't that put a dampener on 25th Dec when he reaises that actually he opened all his gifts last week and there's jack all left to open because he had no patience.

megletthesecond · 18/12/2016 15:44

Of course we wait until Xmas day. That's the idea.

witsender · 18/12/2016 15:45

We had a Christmas day yesterday with my family as we are away, and did presents with them.

Everything else waits for the day, including any posted ones. thought it was the norm tbh.

Dontneedausername · 18/12/2016 15:46

Any gifts received go under the tree until Xmas day!

ClashCityRocker · 18/12/2016 15:46

We wait for Christmas Day, but in the past when we've celebrated with a family early we have opened on the day we celebrate Christmas.

I'm a child, and like to see them all under the tree Grin

DesolateWaist · 18/12/2016 15:47

I bet you are the kind of heathen that starts on the second layer of chocolates before the first layer are finished too.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 18/12/2016 15:47

We wait. They go under the 🎄 It builds the excitement of the day & it doesn't matter that it's 'not very exciting'. Anticipation is lovely and seldom got these days.

Lorelei76 · 18/12/2016 15:47

costa "Who opens Christmas presents before Christmas?"

anyone who isn't going to be home on the day? I'm sure as hell not lugging things on the Tube to my folks only to lug them back again on Boxing Day.

most of my friends are Londoners who will be heading out for Xmas, they will either open before or open when they get back. Even if you have a car, it's a total waste of time to lug it all about.

DP and I are eating the chocolates my parents sent us for Xmas.

Gutted2016 · 18/12/2016 15:50

Celebrating with family on a different day or so is a bit different to just fancying an early present though.

Costacoffeeplease · 18/12/2016 15:52

That's not what the op is talking about thought Lorelei, she's talking about presents received by post

e1y1 · 18/12/2016 15:53

Yes, of course you should wait.

Mind, I had it drilled into me from DM that opening birthday cards/gifts or Christmas gifts before the date was tempting fate. So I always wait.

MistressMerryWeather · 18/12/2016 15:53

I have always done it.

I can honestly say in 28 years it has never made Christmas any less exciting.

Each to their own.

Lorelei76 · 18/12/2016 15:54

costa, what difference does it make whether they were by post or in person?

I'm just saying it's not always practical to open on the day.

I only haven't opened mine so far because I cba!!
