I don't even have a partner that's cheated on me but after seeing so many friends going through it the Emma Thompson/ Alan Rickman story just seems so "real life"

I wonder what the the writer had been through to get it so right

I think there's too much fawning of Emma Thompson every time this film is mentioned. I imagine she'd be embarrassed if she knew.

MycatsaPirate · 18/12/2016 13:14

It's escapism.

I think if someone made a Christmas film that was completely true to life it would involve domestic violence, divorce, alcohol-induced fights, tears and snot and generally be bloody miserable.

If you can't escape the misery of real life at Christmas when can you?

1horatio · 18/12/2016 13:16

Thelma and Louise is indeed awful.

limitedperiodonly · 18/12/2016 13:47

Thanks 1horatio. People can like it if they want but I get fed up when they tout it as a great feminist story. I feel like a humourless pedant for pointing out that it reinforces the message that breaking from gender stereotypes results in severe punishment. So mostly, I don't Grin

1horatio · 18/12/2016 13:49

Ya, of course they have to like it.

But I feel very passionate about this movie and I personally dislike it strongly. For similar (pretty much the same) reasons than you do actually.

I've never watched Love actually, so. I don't have an opinion on this movie.

Actually always wanted to watch it but haven't (up to now). Not sure if it's my kind of movie, but we'll see :)

1horatio · 18/12/2016 13:50

*of course they have the right to like it.

Namechangeemergency I roll my eyes at Notting Hill because I'm a journalist - showbiz - and am bored by the message that we're all cunts.

However the house being doorstepped because Rhys Ifans has blabbed and the film junket where Hugh Grant pretends he's from Horse and Hound is accurate.

simiisme · 19/12/2016 17:45

I love the movie. Always sob at the part where Emma Thompson's character realises the awful truth - brilliant acting on her part.

Re the Kris Marshall storyline

Moderately attractive DS(22) spent a month in California this summer and says he was treated like a love god by the local girls. He had girls grouped around him in bars asking him to say stuff.

He's never seen Love Actually either so will be interesting to watch it with him at Christmas.

TwentyCups · 19/12/2016 18:08

Emma Thompson reminds me of my mother, and my cheating father. Her bright face for the children breaks my heart, as it is exactly how I remember my childhood.

londonrach · 19/12/2016 18:10

Emma straightening the bed..perfect acting!!!

Alleycat1 · 19/12/2016 18:13

The Laura Linney character annoys the hell out of me. She has already answered the phone once, her brother is in a safe place and she and the gorgeous Karl are just about to get down and dirty....ignore the sodding phone and go for it!

Manumission · 19/12/2016 18:15

It was about what happened when they tried to break free, in that time and place wasn't it? But they did try.

Also, it was about Hollywood in the early 90s not quite being ready for happy women who rejected their alloted traditional roles Grin

But it was a change to the standard narrative and it was a landmark film because of that.

Thought it was just me, I totally dislike this film for that whole Christmas present / almost cheating scenario and I've not been cheated on to my knowledge but it just destroys an otherwise lovely film.

murakamilove · 19/12/2016 19:04

❤ this film for so many reasons. Kiera Knightley is hideous in it though.

murakamilove · 19/12/2016 19:05

Emma Thompson is remarkable.

Satisfactorylemon · 19/12/2016 19:07

I love it. Its such a good film. Captures the reality of attraction and emotions.

Satisfactorylemon · 19/12/2016 19:08

Twentycups yes!

MrsMattBomer · 19/12/2016 19:14

It's a Christmas tradition that we all watch it together.

I hold it together just about but as soon as she puts the CD on, I blub. I've been that woman. My first ever boyfriend (I was convinced he was the one) bought me a really crap video for Christmas (our 5th together). I'd seen him buying a beautiful medallion sort of thing but it wasn't for me.

I dumped him not long after. Love Actually hadn't come out then but when I saw it for the first time it really got me.

Emma Thompson just plays it perfectly. She doesn't make a huge deal of it, sobbing dramatically. She just cries, wipes it away because she knows what's happened, and then the mask is back on. There are so many women like that and I think that's what makes it ring true.

MrsMattBomer · 19/12/2016 19:16

Janeybobs

It's not almost cheating, he has cheated on her. That's why when his OW is putting on the necklace the bed behind her is unmade - they have just made love and he's given her the necklace. At least that's what the Writer/Director says.

I don't see why it spoils it really - I think it just shows the fact that everybody is experiencing different things in their life and whilst Emma T and Alan R still love each other, it's obviously a different kind of love than it used to be and it'll never quite be the same.

MerylPeril · 19/12/2016 19:22

Honestly I would like to know if a carer would let someone ring their sister through the night like that for no particular reason.
Esp if they knew it was her Xmas party!

It really annoys me (so wouldn't answer the phone is Karl was there)

Problem is with Love Actually is there is bits of brilliance/realism and totally shit/unbelievable bits

The casting of people only because they are famous really lets it down (martine and Kiera)

MrsMattBomer · 19/12/2016 19:25

The best story of Love Actually was edited out. Between Anne Reid (who plays the really stern headmistress in the film) and her lesbian partner played by Frances de la Tour.

You find out that her partner is dying of cancer and Anne Reid is looking after her, and the reason she's so stern is because she's bottling up all the emotions and keeping a brave face on it for her partner, who hasn't really come to terms with what terminal means.

It's a beautiful, brilliantly played little story that doesn't rely on stereotyping or falseness. It feels real and lovely. It was edited out for timing reasons but I think it's on YouTube. It's really sweet.

squoosh · 19/12/2016 19:31

Karl's torso is the best part of Love Actually. Wild horses and a million phone calls could not have torn me away from that bed.
