Manager keeps correcting me.

I'm 100% okay with being told IABU.

I work in a fast paced area, very loud and very busy - its hard to hear people and as a result asking someone to repeat themselves is the usual. I often have to ask ''What?'' because I didn't catch something.

My manager has a habit of saying ''Pardon!'' every time I say ''What?'' as a way of correcting me - Every. Single. Time. Its like having my mother in work.

AIBU to think she shouldn't be doing this every time? I could understand if I wasn't saying please or thank you, but I do. Just for full disclosure we're from different counties (I'm from the north), she also tends to correct the way I say things because of my accent.

She sounds like an idiot. Nothing wrong with saying "what" or "pardon" but people who go out of their way to make sure everyone knows they say "pardon" are painfully pretentious.

Depending on your work environment, manners might be seen as important and 'what' isn't very polite. Correcting your accent isn't on though.

She is rude to keep correcting you, and especially correcting your accent.
I think 'what' is rude though, and would prefer to hear pardon or sorry.

What is the correct thing to say. You should start correcting her Pardon.

Maybe she thinks "What?" is rude and 'snippy'. Many people consider rude and 'snippy' to be a form of bullying.

'What?' is U. 'Pardon?' is non-U. Anyone who cares enough to be correcting people should really get it right.

People that use "pardon" hate "what", using "sorry?" is a good compromise.

Well, I was always taught that "what?" is rude, so, based on that, I'd say YABU.

I've seen threads about what/pardon before and apparently "what" is correct.

Highlighting your northen-ness by correcting your pronunciation is harassment. I know that sounds a bit hysterical, but it is. You don't have to put up with this. If it's such a fast paced environment, why does this person have time to single you out?

I work in fast food - we're all common as muck, no one gets offended by saying ''What?''

Lots of people say ''What?'' just as as reflex and she corrects them too but she does correct me more, and corrects my accent too (they all have the same accent).

We're both in our twenties and she's only a few years older than me, I think sometimes she's trying to assert herself as older IYSWIM?

Pardon is rude, what is fine where I'm from. Better still a questioning 'sorry?', but never 'pardon', I'd be wondering who the hell did you think you were to 'pardon' at me .

I'd tell them it's rude to mock an accent for starters. Buy them a book on modern etiquette for Christmas. They are falling short.

'Pardon' is so try hard. 'What' is kind of rude. To my ears, 'Sorry?' or 'Excuse me?' sounds better, but what do I know, I say 'Say again?'

I say sorry rather than what but I would never, ever say pardon.

One of my work colleagues was told to not speak in such a Mancunian accent on the phone a few years ago. She is Mancunian and we are based in Manchester!! I wonder if she would've been asked not to speak with her accent if she was from, say Jamaica or France or Ireland?

Hoiks bosom "Pardon?" is vrai common. Vrai, vrai, common. "What?", "Excuse me?" or "Sorry, didn't catch that" are all acceptable.

But if your manager is north western she's possibly been taught that pardon is the posh thing to say. When in reality actual posh people just bark "EH?" or "WHAT?" at each other.

Every time she says Pardon, say 'why what have you done'. Pardon is horrible but I'm not keen on What? either and usually say Sorry?

Compromise: "SAY AGAIN!?"

I was taught 'what' was rude and to say pardon. I would be thinking of different things to say to wind her up, "say again?" "Repeat please?" "Again?" Just never pardon she is acting superior

I do tend to wind her up a bit about it now because it annoys me so much If she says ''Pardon'' to correct me in passing I pretend like I didn't hear and say ''What?''' back if I'm getting fed up and she's done it a few times too many on shift.

This is so true!! You should hear my Nana, 'EH?!' barked in a super aggressive way designed to make everyone jump is her absolute favourite
