To want guests to remove their shoes when walking through my house?

Not sure if I'm particularly bothered by this because it's mainly the in-laws who do it, but most people know I expect shoes off as you walk through the front door.

I've mentioned it to dh a few times, I think he thinks I'm just picking at his parents behaviour, but it makes my blood boil... I clean and hoover my home, invite you round and you tread your dirty shoes all over the floor which me and my kids sit and play on (and my little girl crawls around on) Angry. My parents have the decency to bring their slippers!

Expat - why on Earth would people expect to come to a Dinner party and keep heels on? No only dirty but likely to naff a wooden floor up from the heels.
Honestly never had this issue, nobody has ever come to a dinner party or anything g at our home and left their shoes on. We have a chair they can sit on in hall and take shoes off, and wooden floors are heated and warm.

squoosh · 13/12/2016 22:37

There's definitely someone who bulk buys slippers and bins them after one use. I don't think she's overly troubled by her carbon footprint!

Acornantics · 13/12/2016 22:37

I have carpet in the through route to the rest of the house from the (wood floor) hallway. I don't want dirty shoes on the carpet, treading in mud, grass, dog poo and whatever else through the house. I always take my shoes off in other people's houses and expect guests to do the same in mine. It's not unreasonable; it's polite, and sanitary!

Ldnmum2015 · 13/12/2016 22:37

If they are old it might be difficult for them to be bend down to change their shoes, me personally I find it really uncomfortable, not because my feet might small or i am not wearing matching socks, I just never feel comfortable being barefooted out side my home, where I only take my shoes of because I am comfortable. I chose a practical easy to clean for a reason, I'd never dream of asking my visitors to remove their shoes, especially if they were my partners parents.

squoosh · 13/12/2016 22:41

'why on Earth would people expect to come to a Dinner party and keep heels on?'

Because that's normal for lots of people! I've had dinner parties, never told anyone to take their shoes off though. And likewise I've never been asked in anyone else's house.

Of course several bottles of wine in they're more than welcome to kick them off if they're more comfy that way!

Apachepony · 13/12/2016 22:44

We have no carpets but insane enough to have put in cream gloss tiles. Definitely reverting back to being a no shoe household now (as we were in our last house with cream shiny tiles). Within days of them being in my ds had walked dog-shit up the hall. Which reminded me of the time when my dad took exception at the no-shoe rule - and also walked dog poo up the hall. I doubt that's the only dog poo has been walked in, it's just we can see it now. It's a bit yucky to think what was all over the floor before!

Well, in that case. The washing isn't really motivated by the carbon food print... Id just feel stupid binning them when somebody wore them for one dinner or something.

And yes, just googled it. Heels really do mess up floors. I wonder whether we were just lucky our downstairs floors haven't been hacked up yet.

CozumelFox · 13/12/2016 22:46

I never thought 'shoes off' would be a debatable thing. We were a shoes-on family growing up and the carpets were a disgrace - two teens and a builder? Yuck.

I bought the rugs in this house and paid for the wood floor, so damn right I insist on no shoes. It's not hard.

When the kids take their shoes off at my mother's house, she does this silly laugh and a "tee hee, oh we don't do that nonsense here, you keep them on." Whatever, your scratched floor.

I have to admit, though, I'm a bit nervous about this if we try to sell the house - how do I get viewers and estate agents to take their shoes off (the answer is 'I can't', isn't it?) and what if they tread dirt in all the carpets/scratch the floor of a house I'm trying to sell?

crashdoll · 13/12/2016 22:48

I visit a wide variety of clients every day and very, very few want me to take my shoes off. I always offer but many sort-of laugh at me.

One thing I hate is being offered slippers. No, ta, I have no idea if anyone else's feet have been in them. I don't judge people who want shoes off but I very much judge those who foist slippers upon me.

1horatio · 13/12/2016 22:49

Maybe that's when these disposable slippers mentioned above could be useful, fox?

1horatio · 13/12/2016 22:51

crashdoll

Not even disposable ones? Or ours, that get washed and are each in a separate little sachet? (DH is very much for this slipper rule, and so am I. But I'm not a British and growing up I knew no one that wore shoes inside the house. We didn't even wear them in the classrooms when we were younger)

RingInTheNew · 13/12/2016 22:51

For some reason I make an exception for parties. I know people wear nice shoes and wouldn't want to take them off, and it would be weird if everyone took shoes off for that. You can have one big clean-up after a party though. It's the daily grime being traipsed through the house if you keep your shoes on that gets me.

ProseccoBitch · 13/12/2016 22:51

My house is all open plan, no hallway, so yes everyone has to take their shoes off inside the front door. I don't wear shoes in my house so I don't expect anyone else to.

1horatio · 13/12/2016 22:52

And DH is a bit peculiar (not in a bad way). But he often does t see things like the rest of the population...

Soooo.... disposable slippers? Or if I mention they've been machine washed?

Kel1234 · 13/12/2016 22:54

If someone asked me to because they don't have shoes in the house then I would do. But I'd never expect people to take their shoes off in my house. Seems a bit ott to me

ProseccoBitch · 13/12/2016 22:54

RingIn I make exceptions for parties too, I don't care because I know I'll have mess to clean up anyway! Also don't care if I've had a few drinks and someone comes round, then I have a personality transplant and say oh gosh don't worry about shoes leave them on!!

MrsDustyBusty · 13/12/2016 22:54

Well do you want to wear someone else's socks?

Ameliablue · 13/12/2016 22:54

YABU

RingInTheNew · 13/12/2016 22:56

Ha prosecco - yes, it definitely matters less the more drunk you get!

squoosh · 13/12/2016 22:59

Yeah I wouldn't be excited at the prospect of being told to pick a pair of slippers to wear. No matter how well laundered, or charmingly artisan 😀 they were.

Footinmouthasusual · 13/12/2016 22:59

Yes I think parties are an exception as an output can look shit without the shoes but generally it's shoes off. Basic manners

Footinmouthasusual · 13/12/2016 23:00

Outfit obviously

1horatio · 13/12/2016 23:02

Huh...

We even have them in some freaking old basket (DH's... greatgrandma's, i think)

Oh well, frequent visitors have personalised slippers, can't complain about that. I thought we had a good system on the slipper front. Oops 😂😅
Have to revise that, oh my 😖
And people could be in they're socks, it's just a slipper offer.

But nope, people aren't allowed upstairs in their shoes.

Warl · 13/12/2016 23:02

YANBU I was brought up to always take my shoes off at home & when visiting others I wouldn't dream of flouncing through somebody's house in shoes I'd worn outside.
I have cream carpets.... MIL once made a big drama of feeling faint when she had to bend down to take her boots off (she's 50 no health issues) so I brought home a box of shoe covers from work & she will now endure sitting with those bright blue condom like creations over her scruffy boots until she feels well enough to take them off at the door!!
