To think we're going on a bear hunt is boring and not a new classic

My three year old daughter has never liked it and I find it dull and not particularly charming. Everyone else I know loves it and now it's the main t.v event for pre-schoolers being dramatised on Christmas Eve. Is it just me?

Yes! Poor bear. That last page where the poor bear is walking away by the sea makes me sad.

It's too repetitive. I also find it dull.

Isitadoubleentendre · 12/12/2016 21:10

Yeah I always think I'm missing something with this book, its really boring. I don't geddit?

soloula · 12/12/2016 21:11

YABU My 3yo DD loves acting it all out when we're reading it. Today she wanted me to help make a bear hunt play scene for her lego so she could take her wee lego characters through the grass, river, mud, forest and cave and back again with a wee bed for them to climb into and a door to shut. Lots of excitement in our house when we saw the first advert for the C4 show (from the big kids and little kids).

corythatwas · 12/12/2016 21:11

It's good if you enjoy acting/doing different voices. But agree that it's hard on the poor bear. He looks so sad in that final picture Sad

I am an absolute children's book obsessive (and a primary teacher) and also find it massively overrated.

There are many wonderfully written, clever, charming and hilarious children's books out there but this one is just a bit dull.

StrongTeaHotShower · 12/12/2016 21:17

Exactly. There are so many other good books around for that age group that children and adults alike enjoy.

YANBU. I don't get it and DS1&2 don't care for it either.

Vanillaradio · 12/12/2016 21:22

3 year old Ds would strongly disagree with you. He has known it by heart for about a year now and does all the actions (it's much better the way he does it than the way I do it.) I think we'll be watching it over and over (at least we'll get a break from the Gruffalo! )

Andcake · 12/12/2016 21:24

V dull ... Ds had a phase of liking it ( someone bought him a copy) I hid it 😊

StrongTeaHotShower · 12/12/2016 21:25

We love peace at last that's a good bear story.

Violetcharlotte · 12/12/2016 21:25

I love it and my kids did too when they were little.

EustaceClarenceScrubb · 12/12/2016 21:26

I hate the last page too, with that sad image of the bear. Not quite as much as I hate the last page of 'Farmer Duck' though. How he stands on the cart bossing all the animals around, when the whole damn story is based around how bad he felt when the farmer did it to him. I lose all sympathy for him!

witsender · 12/12/2016 21:27

Yanbu. Dull and irritating to read. So many fabulous books out there and this is declared a classic.

PickAChew · 12/12/2016 21:28

It was the first book DS2 ever let anyone read to him - when he was 6!

witsender · 12/12/2016 21:28

The bear snores on is a way better bear book.

SecretRed · 12/12/2016 21:29

I love it and all three of my children have loved it too.

Bestthingever · 12/12/2016 21:30

YABU my dd loved hearing it again and again when she was a toddler. I have fond memories of reading it at bedtime with her. On the other hand, I really don't get the appeal of the Gruffalo.

StrongTeaHotShower · 12/12/2016 21:30

Farmer duck Shock** a book I hate even more.

Soubriquet · 12/12/2016 21:30

Yabvu

It was one of my favourite books as a kid and dd seems to have followed in my footsteps

phlebasconsidered · 12/12/2016 21:33

In all my years of teaching, no book is ever so loved as my old stand by of "Dogger" by Shirley Hughes. Trounces Bear hunt and Stick Man. Even my ten year old will still listen to Shirley Hughes if I read any.

StarCrossdSkys · 12/12/2016 21:34

It was a campfire chant we used to do in Guides, clapping the rhythm on hands and thighs. I like the book but the illustrations make it and no he didn't write it!

justwanttoweeinpeace · 12/12/2016 21:35

Have you marched around a real wood shouting the whole thing with your 3yo.

If not try it. Best fun ever and utterly terrifies the squirrels Grin

StrongTeaHotShower · 12/12/2016 21:35

Phleb we've never read it. Is it an older children's book?

OP posts:
SittingDrinkingTea · 12/12/2016 21:35

Micheal Rosen didn't write, he just wrote it down. I'm pretty sure it's a traditional American story. I don't care how well he performs it, I always get slightly irritated when it's referred to as Micheal Rosen's We're Going on a Bear Hunt because it's bloody well not.
