To think I should be able to have my cats back?

harveyyspecter · 05/12/2016 07:38

I posted the other day about having to rehome my cats as my new let doesn't allow pets.

I've been absolutely heartbroken since they went and I've contacted the landlord and pretty much begged her to let me keep the cats and she's said yes.

The cats are at a foster home being looked after by a woman who works for the rescue I got them from. I've asked for them back and they said no Sad

I'm devastated. What do I do?

I can see why they've said no Tbh

You want the cats, you re home the cats, you want them back! The cats home just want them to live someone secure

You should really of asked the landlady before giving the cats up

wowfudge · 05/12/2016 07:40

Did you sign anything when you took them to her? Can you provide written proof the landlord is now okay with you having cats at the property?

Nodney · 05/12/2016 07:41

Really?? I'm gob smacked. I've absolutely no idea what to do but I'm bumping this for you. I'd be devastated too

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2016 07:44

Did you have them fostered through a charity? Some do home visits before letting you take cats from them.

When you gave them up was it on a permanent or temporary basis? What did you sign?

I hope you can get things sorted.

harveyyspecter · 05/12/2016 07:44

I realise that they need stability but I regret more than anything giving them up. I thought I was doing the right thing.

I've not signed anything.

I'm so upset. They're my cats and I've made a huge mistake.

So you didn't contact your landlady to ask about the cats until after you'd rehomed them?

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 05/12/2016 07:46

Are they microchipped?

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2016 07:46

Are they in a new permanent home or are they waiting to be rehomed?

burgundyandgoldleaves · 05/12/2016 07:47

No, stone

Originally, OP wasn't allowed to have them. She arranged for them to be rehomed through a reputable charity. She then pleaded with the landlady when she realised how much she missed them. The landlady relented but the charity are refusing to give them back.

stonecircle · 05/12/2016 07:47

But they're not your cats any more. Maybe they don't think you're in a stable enough position ? They may be thinking you could move again and have the same problem.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/12/2016 07:47

It may be that they've already lined up for them or its a 'failed fosterer'. I'm quite contemptuous about those who give up their pets with little reason so wouldn't be handing them back.

harveyyspecter · 05/12/2016 07:48

I asked the agent and they said no pets.

They're microchipped yeah. They'll be advertised to be rehomed soon Sad

JustanotherMortificado · 05/12/2016 07:50

That's selfish of the rescue as the cats are better off with you.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 05/12/2016 07:50

If you haven't signed anything and they are microchipped and in your name then I would think they don't have much right to keep them. I'd have a look online and see where you stand legally.

stonecircle · 05/12/2016 07:50

Burgundy - thanks but my question was largely rhetorical to suggest to the op she might have done her pleading before giving her cats up!

SaucyJack · 05/12/2016 07:51

That is a bit harsh. It's not like cat re-homing placed are crying out for cats.

Can you get someone you trust to adopt them on your behalf, then just give them back to you?

19lottie82 · 05/12/2016 07:54

I agree, you Must have signed some sort of agreement....... what did it say?

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2016 07:58

Which charity was it?

harveyyspecter · 05/12/2016 07:59

They are my cats and I'm determined to get then back. I didn't sign anything when they went. When they adopted them I signed something that said they must go back to the same rescue if I had to return them for whatever reason which is what I did.

I know I should have tried harder but I panicked and needed a home for me and dd.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/12/2016 08:01

Unfortunately the rescue will have you down as unreliable and will be reluctant to return them in case the same thing happens again at some point in the future (which in reality it could, even if not for a few years.

Costacoffeeplease · 05/12/2016 08:02

I can fully understand why they won't give them back, you can't just chop and change like this

NoelHeadbands · 05/12/2016 08:02

What reason have they given you?

NorksAreMessy · 05/12/2016 08:08

One of the questions you are asked when you go to rescue a cat is "have you ever given up any pet to a sanctuary".
This is not quite the same situation, but from the rescue organisation POV, it is similar.
:(

OnionKnight · 05/12/2016 08:13

It's not rocket science to understand why they won't give them back.

WannaBe · 05/12/2016 08:18

When you adopted them you will have signed something to say that if you couldn't keep them you would return them to the rescue you got them from. That would be agreement that essentially they are the rescue's cats now that you have returned them.

I wouldn't give them back either TBH. You gave them up, you can't just change your mind like that. If you were serious about wanting to keep them you would have begged the landlord before you got rid of them, not at the point you realised you missed them.

They're no longer your cats.
