To be awake?

Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 03:46

I'm on a mental health ward and I've had sleeping meds but I'm still awake. I've had some sleep but an upset tummy woke me up. They have stopped two of my meds cold turkey without telling me why, which is why my tummy is bad I think (although they deny this)

Anyhow, who else is awake? What are you up to?

Awake- working out, hope your feeling better soon.

Lorelei76 · 05/12/2016 03:53

Oh I feel for you
I'm awake. I have insomnia issues and I've reached the point where I'm worried about taking pills as I'm not getting real sleep.
My mum is really poorly so I'm awake and feeling majorly anxious.
Sometimes you can just say okay, I'll cope but other times you can't. Weird.
Can they stop meds without telling you? Seems rather off and awfully confusing for the patient.

Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 04:27

They just keep fobbing me off with excuses. I'm a voluntary patient and on the verge of discharging myself as I have meds at home.

Hello, I'm on a nightshift, all is quiet, everyone is fast asleep & im having a wee break before starting to write up my notes.
Hope your doing ok OP.

FannyFifer · 05/12/2016 04:30

Just seeing that your meds have been stopped cold turkey, that's pretty unusual, what meds?

lljkk · 05/12/2016 04:32

I'm just a rampant insomniac. Been awake since 2:30am. Also have a raspy cough & cold. I can usually get by the whole day on just 2 hours sleep, but not sure about that when I have a draining cold, too. Argh. Supposed to get up proper in 110 minutes to go to work.

Hope your tum feels better soon, OP.

Graphista · 05/12/2016 04:37

That's not on stopping you cold turkey and not even explaining why.

I'm awake partly as I also have mh issues and partly as dd is poorly and I'm keeping an ear out.

Hope you get sleep soon and have a better day tomorrow op Flowers

Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 04:37

Sertraline and arirpiprazole. I got given zopiclone to help me sleep as I was really agitated but I'm back being awake now and someone is kicking off about something or other

Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 04:39

They are saying the doctor has suspended them (but not my lamotrigine thank goodness) and I need to wait to see the psychiatrist to find out why.

OP posts:
FannyFifer · 05/12/2016 04:46

Both those meds should have tapered dosage so gradually decreasing before stopping..
Insomnia is also one of most common side effects with stopping them.
Can you speak to psychiatrist in the morning as just stopping those medications is really not acceptable.

Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 04:51

It took them 19 hours after I arrived to even do my basic checks (during which time I couldn't even have paracetamol) so I'm not holding out much hope for any answers any time soon.

This morning a nurse said I couldn't possibly have withdrawals effects as the meds stay in my system for four weeks. I've tried but nobody will even admit I am experiencing withdrawals.

Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 05:07

I've got out of bed and gone to the main area where half the ward seem to be up.

Katedotness1963 · 05/12/2016 05:20

I haven't slept yet. I thought I was close about 4 but then my brain said "you know what we haven't thought about in a while? That episode of Luther...". Goodbye sleep!

Hope you feel better soon and can get some sleep.

cookieswirls · 05/12/2016 05:43

Been up all night with my twins like I have been the past 10 months! Wishing you all the best op Flowers

AllPartOfThePlan · 05/12/2016 05:44

Awake, been awake all night, being an idiot wasting my life online but it's the only "me" time I get and I'm in really need of some space at the moment. I'm going to seriously regret this in about 3 hours. Sad

RochelleGoyle · 05/12/2016 05:49

Hello, I'm awake with my 3 month old. Sorry you're having such a rough time OP, Hope things get better for you soon.

ZebraOwl · 05/12/2016 05:54

Oh, Struggling, I'm sorry you're having such a grim time.

Really REALLY worrying you've had medications stopped dead that are meant to be tapered. Weekends on medical wards are always tough in terms of getting things done - my guess is that it's the same in MH services?

I know it's scary, but you need to advocate for yourself on this one - you've GOT to see the psychiatrist, today, to get your medication sorted out. It might be worth going to the Matron/Ward Manager to ask them to help. (Assuming things run similarly again, sorry...).

Please don't discharge yourself though: if you've been given a bed somewhere in the NHS MH system you must be very poorly atm. See the psychiatrist & get your medication rearranged into something sensible (people always do ridiculous things when they clerk me in, I am on over 20 different things but I hand over my prescription with drugs & doses & timings as well as discussing it - invariably at least one thing is wrong though, frequently my [controlled drug] painkillers...) & also get your Plan made with your team so you can start working towards a safe discharge & OP treatment.

Starting to think they are doing it on purpose to make me suffer. I don't know why, but it makes sense.

pollyglot · 05/12/2016 06:18

Hope things are better for you after the dark dawn, OP.

Broken11Girl · 05/12/2016 06:25

Oh, love. I'm sorry the idiots did this.
I'm up due to mh issues myself. My sleep pattern is shot.

Morning all, I'm in labour currently and have been since Thursday. In agony and wondering whether to ask DH to stay at home. Struggling, I hope you get a decent explanation Flowers

brummiesue · 05/12/2016 06:42

No medical professional is going to do something on purpose to 'make you suffer'. Speak to them on ward round

Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 10:11

Why would they keep my meds from me without an explanation then deny that withdrawals are even possible when they clearly are?

OP posts:
Struggling123 · 05/12/2016 10:28

Anyway, this is an assessment ward with a maximum stay of five days and I've been here since Friday so I should be home soon
