To ask the school... WTF

DS came home yesterday with a payment card for his first residential trip next year. The cards were blue and apparently all the girls got pink cards!

Some of the girls asked for blue cards and were told that blue is for the boys and pink for the girls

Why? What's even the point of colour coding payment cards?

Exactly... why not plain white card.

That's bizarre! There's no gender attached to cash?! (And I'm guessing they charge the same per child!)

This would piss me off too, I'd want to know why there are two coloured cards let alone why girls have to have pink and boys blue ones

TBH I don't think I would have questioned the colour of the cards and I'm absolutely sure dd wouldn't have mentioned it.

Ask the school their reasons for distinguishing between boys and girls coloured payment cards by all means. Come back and let us know what they say

I'd be tempted to "lose" my card and replace it with a plain white one.

Could it be for room allocations? So that when the cards come back, they can put them into piles to sort out how the rooms will be organised?

I wonder who's bright idea that was :| if they wanted a way to distinguish between boys and girls, i'm sure there is a less gendered way to do it.

Is it's for dorm allocation I don't see the big deal. Would it have made a difference if the cards were green and orange?

It's annoying, I don't like this unthinking bias, but I think I'd get over it really quickly.

Blue IS for boys and pink IS for girls, isn't it?
And as others have said, it is probably for room allocation later.

I agree with Midnite and Marcipex: it's most likely to help organise sleeping arrangements.

If they chose green and purple, staff would constantly need to remind themselves which was boys and which was girls. Whereas this way it's easy at a glance.

Seriously, if staff struggled to remember such a thing I'd be very concerned about their ability to teach my child.

I'm a teacher and I'd be livid with the member of staff who did this.

In a decade, such things will be really frowned upon, it's already happening with very good reason.

I think you'll need to elaborate a bit on that.

As a teacher I would hope the people organising this trip had alternative means of knowing who was on the trip, and all the relevant info about the students involved, rather than relying on the colour of payment cards!!

I agree with you OP I think this is incredibly disappointing.

It isn't the sort of thing I think worth getting terribly worked up about on the surface of things, but actually the underlying message there is quite negative so yes, I would ask for this not to happen again.
