To think 335,000 extra people coming to the UK in a year is too high

Where will they all live? What jobs will they all do? I know it may help GDP, but that is irrelevant as GDP per head is the important thing.

It does seem to be race to the bottom with more part time work , uber type work and the country is borrowing more and more and the national debt is 35k per head now.

Supper But most migrants from the EU coming over here do have a job. Why would they leave otherwise?

justicewomen · 01/12/2016 14:37

Colby -
Giving EU migrants the same benefits the local receive is a condition of the single market - part of the quid pro quo

The profile of those on JSA does not generally fit the profile of the vacancies- in terms of health, skills, geography, etc- so forcing them to do workfare will have zero benefit to the problem we face. Its window dressing at best. A better idea would be paying/lending the money to unemployed people to train into an actually needed skill like HGV driving

Suppermummy02 · 01/12/2016 14:38

Before 2010, food banks were not allowed to advertise their existence.

It's pretty tricky to find any source on this, except a quote by one politician in 2014 that you seem to have more or less copy-pasted.

BillSykesDog · 01/12/2016 14:39

'make people work for their JSA.'

I think you'll find that's called 'having a job'.

Suppermummy02 · 01/12/2016 14:41

Supper But most migrants from the EU coming over here do have a job

Thats not the stats released today from the ONS
immigration = 650,000, the highest estimate recorded
182,000 had a definite job to go to

justicewomen · 01/12/2016 14:41

Supper mummy your article states that benefits delays (and thus the need to bridge the gap) is the cause of the rise of food banks. with the addd issue of the DWP no longer giving social fund loans

Lateralthinker2016 · 01/12/2016 14:41

No need to create a link- it's there already.... We have an awful lot of people need help, yet we also feel obliged to help more.... Who gets priority here? And why? I mean seriously now.... For such a wealthy country, why are people homeless or using food banks?

Suppermummy02 · 01/12/2016 14:42

Anyway gotta get to work, enjoy the debate.

justicewomen · 01/12/2016 14:47

Supper mummy

The Govt are discouraging overseas recruitment so its is unsurprising that when they arrive the migrants don't have a job. But the overwhelming majority get one and quickly (as JSA is time limited to 6 months max and before that there is a genuine prospect of work test at 3 months and 6 months)

Elendon · 01/12/2016 14:49

How many students were in there Supper?

sportinguista · 01/12/2016 15:00

It's really a perfect storm of things isn't it? Cuts, people not dying, rising rents and house prices, migration, birth rates, big business and a whole raft of things. Trying to see the wood for the trees is nigh impossible really?

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 15:27

Very odd that your posting seems to centre around disputing the indisputable

If it were indisputable, it wouldn't be so damn easy to dispute it, would it?

Manumission · 01/12/2016 15:29

Well I suppose it's 'easy' to dispute that the earth is spherical, but I don't quite see the point.

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 15:35

No, because the earth is in fact an oblate spheroid. That is called a fact.
"London is much more crowded than it used to be" is not a fact. It is an opinion, not borne out by statistics.

You really need to get a handle on such basics before you attempt to join debate on serious matters.

FizzBombBathTime · 01/12/2016 15:36

No, because the earth is in fact an oblate spheroid.

...is the most wanky thing I've heard on mumsnet today.

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 15:37

Facts are wanky? How sad for you.

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 15:38

I guess thats the "post-truth" society for you. Why let facts and reality get in the way of a debate of opinions?

FizzBombBathTime · 01/12/2016 15:38

No, but being facetious and avoiding the argument is.

FizzBombBathTime · 01/12/2016 15:41

You're not the mumsnet police... It's not up to you to decide who can or can't 'join in the debate'

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 15:43

Of course I can't, it was merely a suggestion.

IT's not avoiding the argument, its engaging with it, in that you can't have a sensible argument based on opinions with no basis in fact.

If you think that establishing whether the population is particularly high now or not is not relevant to discussion on whether more people living there will have an impact suggests it is you who is actually avoiding the argument.

Manumission · 01/12/2016 15:43

No, because the earth is in fact an oblate spheroid. That is called a fact.
"London is much more crowded than it used to be" is not a fact. It is an opinion, not borne out by statistics.

Grin Ah must be advanced twattery week Smile

We'll try again. Try to concentrate.

The London population reached a peak in 1939 that was not surpassed until 2014.

(Not opinion. GLA figures. Read the link.)

In between, WW2 then slum clearance and decent living standards meant that overcrowding ceased to be a serious issue for more than 7 decades.

Elendon · 01/12/2016 15:43

I have more interesting statistics for you. It seems that more people from the UK travel abroad than those from other countries visit. A lot more. I wonder why?

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/leisureandtourism/articles/traveltrends/2015-05-20

I would buy a property abroad going by these stats if I wished to be part of the tourism industry.

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 15:45

We'll try again. Try to concentrate

Perhaps you could try looking at something other than the bbc news site for information. You haven't accurately understood the population figures.

FizzBombBathTime · 01/12/2016 15:46

User what are you on about dude? I was just calling you out on your anal post about the earth... That had fuck all to do with immigration. And you were being facetious to manumission for some strange reason.

You need a dark room... ASAP.
