To think 335,000 extra people coming to the UK in a year is too high

Where will they all live? What jobs will they all do? I know it may help GDP, but that is irrelevant as GDP per head is the important thing.

It does seem to be race to the bottom with more part time work , uber type work and the country is borrowing more and more and the national debt is 35k per head now.

Hmm

Yeah, build a wall, keep those forriners out Hmm

Where are you getting your figures from anyway?

Hellmouth · 01/12/2016 10:14

You know a lot of people coming to the UK to work are very well qualified. It's not their fault companies keep hiring them :D

PhilODox · 01/12/2016 10:16

User- those are official figures released this morning, was on Today programme.

MadHattersWineParty · 01/12/2016 10:17

You do know people leave the UK too don't you? To emigrate, to work/study abroad, to return to their home countries after university or whatever. Have you considered those figures? Any figures? Or just want to incite a goady 'debate' about 'forriners coming over here and taking our jobs'Hmm

PhilODox · 01/12/2016 10:17

Hellmouth- the complaint was that companies are recruiting solely from abroad, and not advertising positions here, bypassing people in UK already.

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 10:18

Released by who and based on what? Is that net migration or not?

PhilODox · 01/12/2016 10:19

There was something awful about putting children if illegal immigrants into "sink schools" too (their words, not mine!) but I missed part of it, so not sure what that rather unsound proposal is.

53rdAndBird · 01/12/2016 10:19

Well, one of the things they'll do is help us pay for the NHS. One of the biggest issues the NHS is dealing with at the moment is the effects of an aging population. Older people as a group need more care and more complex care, and when you have proportionately more of them and fewer working-age people, it's hard to pay for. Immigrants tend to be younger, working-age people, which helps plug that gap.

jdoe8 · 01/12/2016 10:19

Mad - The figures are net migration and released by the Office for National Statistics

The statistics

The latest quarterly figures show that annual net migration to Britain in the 12 months to June 2016 continued at a record level of 335,000, according to the Office of National Statistics

The figures show that level of net migration from the European Union is also at historically high levels and now matches net migration from outside the EU.

The record 650,000 level of immigration in the year to June 2016 was made up of 284,000 EU citizens coming to live and work in Britain, 289,000 coming from outside Europe and 77,000 Britons returning to live in the UK. The most common reason they came to Britain was to work.

ONS- record level of immigration in year to June- NET migration +335,000

MoreThanUs · 01/12/2016 10:22

I think we need to control the number and type of immigrants coming into the UK. We should also take our share of the responsibility for refugees fleeing persecution.

It is a fallacy that we need to have an all or nothing approach and responses like the first one on this thread don't help the need for a reasoned and open debate on the issue.

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 10:24

That's why you voted Brexit, right?

How's that working for you?

fourquenelles · 01/12/2016 10:25

ONS also say that 323,000 people emigrated during last year.

I totally agree and hope you are talking about the first reply on this thread and not me? I'm a strong remainder and anti trump, but I still think immigration is an issue that needs a debate.

But on the other side, we do have record employment and more jobs are being created, so they must be finding work, paying taxes and contributing to our economy?

Randomuser655676f · 01/12/2016 10:27

ONS also say that 323,000 people emigrated during last year.

650,000 people came here.
320,000 people emigrated.

So you a have a NET total of 325,000

MontePulciana · 01/12/2016 10:30

Seriously, you can't express concern about immigration without someone pulling a face. My husband came here from outside the EU 3 years ago. He understands people's concerns with public services, paticularly in our area which is very built up and schools are always over subscribed and you can't get a dentist appointment for 3 weeks. We both use private healthcare thankfully.

53rdAndBird · 01/12/2016 10:31

I still think immigration is an issue that needs a debate.

Where is it not getting a debate? It's in every single newspaper, every single day.

What it could do with is a more reasoned and fact-based debate, not one shaped by a xenophobic tabloid press and various mainstream politicians running scared of UKIP.

Randomuser655676f · 01/12/2016 10:33

We do seem to have an economy that is growing and there are more people in employment. Would this have been possible WITHOUT net migration of generally young, motivated migrants from the EU and outside Europe?

user1480182169 · 01/12/2016 10:33

It doesn't need a debate here for one thing.

Randomuser655676f · 01/12/2016 10:34

it doesn't need a debate here for one thing

Why not?

HateSummer · 01/12/2016 10:34

Where will they live? : they'll live in all the 5 bed houses intended for British families of course. Rent free.

What jobs will they do? : YOUR jobs. They'll take all your jobs. All of them.

Hth.

Lewwat · 01/12/2016 10:37

Yes I'm sure all 335000 people are all well qualified Hmm

I'm sure there are enough houses, schools, doctors... Hmm

Yes anyone without their head dug firmly in the sand is obviously a racist Confused

PhilODox · 01/12/2016 10:38

User148- why on earth not? Hmm
What else is a talk forum for, other than debate? Confused
