To ask how often you drink alcohol?

I really fancied a glass of wine this eve (long day!)

I've realised recently that I'm consuming more wine and some weeks I'll have a glass of wine on 5 or 6 out of 7 nights!!

How often do you all drink and how much?

chickenvindaloo, i used to drink like that as well (and worse) and was constantly moody and snappy, I don't think people realise how much strain your putting on yourself mentally and physically.
I'm definitely much happier now and less stressed, alcohol is no longer my go to when I need to destress.

IonaNE · 30/11/2016 20:31

About once or twice a year I will have a small glass of berry cider. And about 2-3 times a year I'll have some calimocho in the evening (half an inch of red wine mixed with diet coke in a tall glass). But mostly never.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 30/11/2016 20:31

I should say, I didn't always drink like that. It took me 14 years to go from "2 glasses a couple of times a month" to where I ended up.

I never expected to end up an alcoholic but I did, in my early thirties whilst, as I say, holding down a very professional job.

I don't want to sound like a killjoy but Christmas can be a very difficult time for people with alcohol issues. And many a family gathering has been ruined because someone's had too much to drink.

Hugs to anyone else who has struggled. xx

BreatheDeep · 30/11/2016 20:31

I'll have a cider once or twice a month (when I'm not pregnant). I don't really drink at home but I'm allergic to wine so I put a lot of it down to that. Chocolate and crisps are my vice.

starchildareyoulistening · 30/11/2016 20:35

I seem to have lost the taste for it as I've grown older - I really like the fruity ciders like Koppaberg so I will have one or two pints each weekend during the summer, but that's it really... I can't remember the last time I had a drink now. I'd rather drink some yummy tooth-rotting pop like Fanta! Used to do a lot of binge drinking in my teens/early 20's but now I find it just makes me quiet and sleepy so I'm even less fun drunk than I am sober! Grin

Lilaclily · 30/11/2016 20:38

Humanfemale amen to that! Your post sounds so familiar to me and my habits!

SecondaryQuandary · 30/11/2016 20:39

Depends what I feel like. On an average week prob two or three nights none, two or three nights one glass and another night or two three.

When I go out or have people over ( about once a month ) it's more.

trappedinsuburbia · 30/11/2016 20:40

I was always a binge drinker/party girl at the weekend then it went to drinking in the evening after work, then every blooming evening whilst working full time, I stopped when I got pregnant the first time but as my son got older/less dependant I started drinking nearly every night again and getting wasted every weekend. I stopped when I got pregnant again and just don't want to go back to that kind of drinking ever again. I looked bloated and felt awful every day and couldn't wait for my couple of glasses/bottle in the evening to feel normal again.
The thought of being like that again makes me feel sick, I can happily have 2 drinks now and thats it, thats enough, I get quite annoyed if anyone trys to persuade me to have anymore.

GreenTureen · 30/11/2016 20:42

None at the moment as pregnant...but I don't drink every week (or often, even every month). A couple of glasses of wine in an evening once every few weeks or couple of months.

I'm a typical binge drinker though - months without nothing and then a night when i'm 'out out' and i'll probably consume a months worth of units in 8 hours.

GreenTureen · 30/11/2016 20:42

months WITH nothing

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 30/11/2016 20:44

Friday night I usually have 3 half's of lager in the pub, then share a bottle of wine with my husband when we get in. Saturday probably half a bottle of wine. Sunday 2-3 half's in the pub again. Would only ever drink through the week on annual leave or special occasions.

BratFarrarsPony · 30/11/2016 20:45

I dont drink very much at all as I had alcoholic tendencies like a lot of you.
My problem was that if I started a bottle, I would have to finish it.
I have just come back from a social evening in a bar where I had two glasses of sparkling water...:)

I was very proud about 2 months ago when I shared a bottle of wine with a friend, put the glass down between sips, and did not feel like more afterwards.

When I was younger I used to get shit faced on spirits.

I am afraid my son has inherited these alkie tendencies and has got himself into some very dangerous situations. So i have advised him to just not drink. and confessed my own alkieness to him.

stitchglitched · 30/11/2016 20:47

Never, I don't like the taste or how it makes me feel. The last drink I had was a glass of Baileys at Christmas 3 years ago.

BonnieF · 30/11/2016 20:49

I adore alcohol. Wine and beer are among life's great pleasures. I could happily consume the stuff every day, but that really isn't sensible, so i limit myself.

I generally don't drink at all from Monday to Wednesday. By Thursay evening, I'm bored of abstinence, so I normally treat myself to a couple of beers. At weekends, we will normally have G&Ts, then share a bottle of wine with dinner, then maybe a whisky.

Lilaclily · 30/11/2016 20:52

I really think it runs in families

If you drink wine every night your children will think that's normal

So yes at the moment they might be toddlers and not realise but when you're sitting with a 12 year old who has done about alcohol and how many units you should drink in citizenship that day at school, it makes you stop and think about the example you're setting

ValaMalDoran · 30/11/2016 20:53

I've drunk about 2 bottles of wine in the last 9 years...

SarfEast1cated · 30/11/2016 20:55

I have one bottle of beer when I get in from work 5 nights out of 7 and feel really stressed and agitated without it. Not sure if I'm just really thirsty, but it makes me feel very calm. Hope I'm not causing myself any long term damage Confused

overitalready · 30/11/2016 20:56

None for 3 years now.

Prior to these 3 years i was drunk every other day. Drunk / hungover / drunk again.

The wake up call for me was sitting on a bus desperate for a vodka at 3pm.

My mother is a barely functioning alcoholic and im determind never to become her.

flightywoman · 30/11/2016 20:57

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I had a bottle of beer last Friday, then nothing else over the weekend. I had a bottle of wine last night because I wanted to, but have no idea or plans for when I might have something else - it could be Friday, it could be Tuesday, it could be in 10 days.

On holiday we might drink every day, or we might not, when I go and see my sister or my mum we usually end up getting utterly wasted more than once, but these are rare occasions.

My feeling is that if you have to deliberately plan not to drink, or you congratulate yourself for not having a drink then you have a problem with alcohol.

Don't get me wrong, I really like booze, I just don't tend to drink as much as I used to as often as I used to!

Greengoddess12 · 30/11/2016 21:00

Lilac'

Total generalisation there.

Dh and me are wine lovers. Always drank wine in front of our kids but never drunk.

2 drink moderately and 1 rarely and 1 tea total.

We didn't let teachers parent our children through citizenship classes Grin we set them an example in moderate drinking and when not to regards driving etc.

My parents didn't drink and both me and my dsis do.

BonnieF · 30/11/2016 21:03

Chickenvindaloo, I'm so sorry to hear about your issues, and I hope you continue to keep on top of them. Well done.

Your experience is exactly the reason why I'm quite strict with myself about having 3 consecutive 'dry' days each week. I enjoy alcohol far too much to risk having to give it up completely.

Lilaclily · 30/11/2016 21:06

Maybe

I'm more talking about the bottle of wine a night drinkers on mumsnet , that's not moderate and I know because I've been one of them

And I didn't say I'm letting the school aren't my kid !
