Why be creased?

I'm generally intrigued, if you don't iron, and do not outsource your ironing :) do you just not wear things like shirts?

I love my iron, but I'm not crazy enough to iron leggings, jeans and the like - but I couldn't not iron a shirt, or certain tshirts I don't think it would look right and I wouldn't want to look scruffy.

Also whilst I wouldn't judge anyone for not ironing as a rule, if someone came to me for an interview in a shirt that was unironed I would think they didn't really care

PinkSwimGoggles · 25/11/2016 13:02

do you just not wear things like shirts?

nope, not unless for very very special occasions. it's possible to look smart without wearing shirts.

PenguinsandPebbles · 25/11/2016 13:09

I didn't want to imply that people wouldn't look smart! I worked in the city for years and not wearing a shirt or blouse would never have been acceptable :) I still do wear a lot of things like this

BarbaraofSeville · 25/11/2016 13:12

I don't generally wear shirts. I find a trouser suit or dress is more than smart enough for anything I ever do including presenting to international conferences and I wouldn't wear a blouse with a suit jacket as the collars seem to get in each other's way. The dresses and suits are from M&S or Next and are machine washable and if you hang them up to dry, don't need ironing.

Two of our most senior employees with worldwide expert status are amongst the scruffiest men I know. Good job we judge people on their output and knowledge at work, not the finer details of sartorial elegance.

pinkieandperkie · 25/11/2016 13:13

Yes I iron clothes. Dh and 2 ds all have to wear shirts every day. I think they look so much better ironed.

TheProblemOfSusan · 25/11/2016 13:21

PenguinsandPebbles I don't buy cotton shirts, no. My husband does but if he wants them ironing he can do it.

But I wouldn't wear button up shirts like that regardless, cause I've got daftly oversized chest and they look ridiculous - I either have to go up such a large size that I'm drowing in them or the buttons all pop out at the chest.

I tend to wear nice dresses instead, which I dry on the hanger after carefully smoothing them down.

The irony (TOTALLY INTENDED) of all this is that I actually have a brilliant iron and ironing board plus all the accoutrements like a tailor's ham and a sleeve roll, because I sew so I need to iron then.

PiggyPlumPie · 25/11/2016 13:26

I iron - does it make me a bad person? Thought not. You iron if you want and don't if you don't want.

VinegarTits · 25/11/2016 13:36

but despite all your ironing, somehow she's the boss..

Only because I didn't want that job, going into management is not for me, managers in our business only sign timesheets/holidays off etc...

YANBU VinegarTits

I iron a lot of our clothing but draw the line at ironing jeans, tea towels, bed sheets and the like.

I never notice whether anyone else has ironed or not though. It just doesn't cross my mind to check them out in that way.

Shirts and full cotton blends need ironing, but 99% of other stuff doesn't . Honestly not being smug at all, but if you hang clothes from wet after giving them a good shake/stretch, they will dry crease free. Also, I have literally just taken delivery of an electric heated clothes airer with a cover, so it will be interesting to see if that creates enough heat/steam for cotton items to dry crease free too. Happy to update Grin

Wookiecookies · 25/11/2016 15:55

And just to add, this is the saddest thread I have ever commented on here, so I should probably start to get out more... Grin

PenguinsandPebbles · 25/11/2016 17:28

raffles there is nothing wrong with ironing water Grin

I love the look and feel of freshly pressed bed linen Grin DP changed the bed once and didn't use an ironed one I could feel creases it's just not the same.

its good to know there is a kindred spirit out there Grin Wine

What is ironing water?

Yes, I know I could google, but prefer to show my ignorance on here Grin

allegretto · 25/11/2016 17:35

I don't have a dryer so ironing is sadly necessary. Sad I have someone who does it for me

PenguinsandPebbles · 25/11/2016 17:44

I think it is mixed with distilled water, but it also has a lovely scent - I live in a very hard water area and so I'm sure it is better for my very expensive steam iron.

Makes clothes smell fresher for longer IMO. I used Tescos own it's about £1 I think for a bottle.

NicknameUsed · 25/11/2016 17:46

Can someone please tell me which natural fibre magic clothes dry without creases.

Actually, I don't mind ironing. I don't have loads of ironing to do and I do have the time to do it.

look for jersey cotton (t-shirt fabric) rather than woven (shirt fanric)

NicknameUsed · 25/11/2016 18:11

I do wear jersey cotton T-shirts and dresses, but I still like to look smart in a cotton shirt, and DD has to have shirts for school, and the ones she has just look scruffy if they aren't ironed

NicknameUsed · 25/11/2016 18:12

I'm not complaining BTW because I don't hate ironing.

Gatehouse77 · 25/11/2016 18:27

I iron most things because I like the feel of ironed clothes and, for me, prefer the look of ironed clothes. I also iron DH's and the kids' stuff because I want them to look smart. If they choose not to later on, that's their choice.

Gubbins · 25/11/2016 18:52

I don't iron.

A colleague (always beautifully turned out and made-up) once told me (unironed jeans and lumberjack shirt) that clients wouldn't trust my judgement because I looked too scruffy.

Funnily enough all of our regular clients would request me over her and I frequently had to sort out the mistakes she had made with the new ones. After which they'd also ask for me.

Loubilou! Long time no see!

Eolian · 25/11/2016 18:56

No, I never ever wear proper cotton shirts. I really like them on other people but they just don't fit me properly or suit me. I'm the wrong shape for shirts somehow.

Thisjustinno · 25/11/2016 19:05

I never iron anything. I don't buy clothes that need ironing. It's perfectly possible.

PenguinsandPebbles · 25/11/2016 19:24

I don't mind it at all, but I shall investigate some of these tips

Then I may have more time for MN Grin
