To iron my clothes

Why be creased?

ShowMePotatoSalad · 25/11/2016 08:46

I don't iron..I haven't even got one. Creases do come out of clothes if you hang them up and then smooth them out with your hands.

As far as I'm concerned ironing is something I've managed not to do for the last 10 years so I won't start now.

Loubilou09 · 25/11/2016 08:47

I iron everything I wear as no amount of "smoothing" looks good enough. I spend a lot of money on clothes and can't bear them looking like rags after one wash. There might be the odd cheap polyester top that could get away with not ironing but that's about it. People look really scruffy wearing non ironed clothes and that's not a look I want to portray. Each to their own though, if people think they look okay that's their look out I suppose!

Eroica · 25/11/2016 08:47

I used my iron for the first time in four years last night! Only because DS needed a costume for school today, and it needed pleats in.
Just buy jersey clothing, no ironing necessary.

LaurieMarlow · 25/11/2016 08:48

Do what you want with your own time. I don't really have a problem being a bit creased.

milkjetmum · 25/11/2016 08:51

I always iron... Particularly love ironing the kids clothes and putting them in little neat stacks Blush.

One grand designs worth of ironing a few days a week.

NicknameUsed · 25/11/2016 09:19

"Creases do come out of clothes if you hang them up and then smooth them out with your hands."

They don't on cotton shirts. I have tried every non ironing tip on MN, but they don't work on DD's and my shirts. I hate looking like I have slept in my clothes.

Why are people so smug about not ironing? I prefer to wear natural fabrics, and I don't mind ironing. At my age crumpled clothes just make me look old and tired Grin

Sephipops · 25/11/2016 09:24

If something requires ironing I will avoid wearing it again. Most things come out of the tumble dryer crease free enough to be wearable. Also, given I'm on maternity leave with a reflux baby everything is jeans and tops that get covered in sick inside 5 minutes!

KatharinaRosalie · 25/11/2016 09:30

your clothes, do what you want. You would be unreasonable only if you were at the same time constantly moaning about piles of ironing.

Loubilou09 · 25/11/2016 09:46

Nickname - are people smug? I read it as more defensive than smug personally but might have been getting it wrong!

I judge people who look creased and scruffy. In one instant it gives me an indication of their standards in life and says an awful lot about them! Nothing to be smug about there to be honest...

GoofyTheHero · 25/11/2016 09:50

And I judge people who iron for having nothing better to do with their time.

(I don't really, people can do whatever the hell they want with their time. I just thought that judging someone's standards in life by whether their clothes are creased or not is a bit fucking harsh. And we're a family who irons)

NerrSnerr · 25/11/2016 09:52

Each to their own. If you want to iron clothes then do, if not then don't. Your a twat if you judge others for whether they iron or not though.

GoofyTheHero · 25/11/2016 09:54

Yeah, this.

Yoarchie · 25/11/2016 09:54

Do what you want OP

If I get an item that won't hang of tumble nicely it goes to the charity shop. I don't iron. All shirts worn by whole family are easycare.

HearTheThunderRoar · 25/11/2016 09:55

I haven't ironed in about 15 years much to my mother's disgrace

I work full time and am a single parent so maybe if I had a bit more time I could be arsed, however there are not enough hours in the day as it is.

Loubilou09 · 25/11/2016 09:58

If you can't be bothered to look presentable it says a lot about you. If I was faced with 2 people at interview both with similar qualifications and experience and one looked a mess, I would choose the one who had made an effort with their appearance. Similarly I would struggle to take advice or respect someone in authority if they were wearing a creased shirt. These things matter in life however "harsh" you might think it is.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 25/11/2016 09:58

I iron all my clothes.
Looks better, and clothes last longer if they are cared for.

A cotton shirt looks complete different when it's been ironed.

LaurieMarlow · 25/11/2016 09:59

Well that's shallow and idiotic

idontlikealdi · 25/11/2016 10:01

YANBU but I am also NBU to not iron.

I buy clothes that don't need to be ironed (no cotton shirts for example). There are way too many things I'd rather do with my time than iron.

I don't have a tumble drier - it's all about te shake, smooth and hang in this house. No one is creased.

mudandmayhem01 · 25/11/2016 10:02

I never iron, I am regularly complemented on my clothes, especially at work. Knitwear, stretchy dresses. I never buy cotton shirts as they would look crap unironed. I learnt my lesson after wearing a pair of linen trousers which I had ironed and my boss commented on them looking crumpled( had had them on for about an hour!), so there is really no point

GoofyTheHero · 25/11/2016 10:02

That's fine, each to their own. Like I said, I iron my clothes (well DH does, it's his job). Still think you sound like a twat.

Thatwaslulu · 25/11/2016 10:04

I think most of our clothes need an iron. I don't like either DH or DS wearing shirts that are creased and my dresses all need a rub over before wearing. I am lucky that DH was in the army and DS is in cadets so both can iron and do - we take it in turns to iron but we only iron what is needed for a day at a time. I have even started to not iron before we go on holiday and just do it while we are there because I was getting angry that the clothes were creasing in the suitcase. My mother irons socks, pants and towels though the weirdo and thinks I am lazy for not doing that.

PenguinsandPebbles · 25/11/2016 10:05

I iron, I even have ironing water Grin and I don't care if people think that is odd, it smells lovely.

I don't iron everything, but lots of shirts and suit clothes here and they need ironing or you end up looking messy IMO. I iron everyone's clothes as I actually quite like it :)

TheFairyCaravan · 25/11/2016 10:07

I iron. I can tell when people are wearing clothes that they think they've got all the creases out by careful hanging and it's not a look I want.

DH wears a RAF shirt everyday, that has to be ironed. He presses his own trousers. If DS1 brings his army kit home that gets ironed and creases pressed into his trousers. DS2 is a student nurse and irons his uniform, too.

I hate creased bedding on the bed, I think it makes the room look untidy. I don't moan about the ironing. I've got a brilliant steam generator iron so it doesn't take long.

toomuchtooold · 25/11/2016 10:07

If I was faced with 2 people at interview

Christ, I think we can probably all agree that a job interview is a place where even the crumpliest of us will turn up with ironed clothes.

Other than that it depends on the job - I spent many years working in chemical development labs and while I did iron my linen trousers, I wasn't exactly going to go the full power suit when I could easily spend half my morning on the floor trying to fix an oil heater or something. There were people who'd come in and work half the day in cycling gear. My actual boss interviewed me while wearing a jumper with a hole in it. Despite it all, we managed to respect one another and make a lot of very tricky-to-manufacture asthma drugs. Amazing huh.

PenguinsandPebbles · 25/11/2016 10:08

thatwas this is the other reason I do the ironing as DP would iron on the day, it drove me mad!! I like to see everything neatly pressed in the wardrobe.

Plus he is not a timely soul and every time we would be going somewhere there was a mad rush to the iron to do a shirt.

I admire the fact you can do this, I just can't Blush
