AIBU to be sick of Black Friday already? Fair enough if you've had your eye on something and it's going down in price but it just seems like a load of excuses to spend money on stuff people don't need. And I'm getting emails saying stuff like its Black Friday- buy a takeaway pizza etc!

I'm not finding it annoying. It's no different to all the pre-Christmas sales we've had for years, just marketed differently. If people get sucked in to buying stuff they don't need, more fool them.

I am so sick of it. Hundreds of emails and hype over what appears to Mr to be very standard discount and nothing to get excited over. Thoroughly fed up with black Friday and it hasn't even arrived yet!

The sight of people fighting over a discounted television is a good demonstration of where we are going wrong as a species. Thankfully the scenes aren't likely to be as bad as they were a couple of years ago - stores have learnt that they need adequate security and that it reflects badly on them to have images of a riot in their shop shown on TV.

It's over-hyped, but what do you expect from a "special" day that has been specifically created to trick people into buying more stuff they don't necessarily need simply because it's 25% off, one day only. One day only! If only that were true.

Until people don't need to be told that they need to do something on a particular day just because everyone else is, it's not a surprise that businesses try to exploit them.

I has 180 emails in my Junk folder by 6pm today. I'd guess at least 70% of them mention BF in some way. Ridiculous nonsense. Only thing I've bought today are Philosophy products from John Lewis as they're 50% off, but I'd have been buying them anyhow.

It's not even one day though! I got 30% off levis jeans on Wednesday. Not complaining. If you don't like it don't participate. I've had a purge on my inbox and only subscribe to the ones I genuinely like.

It makes no sense in a UK context. We don't HAVE a sales lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas for obvious reasons.

It's the irritating face of globalisation. Consumerism is already quite hyped up enough.

UK retailers are dialing it back, particularly in fashion - nobody wants to discount heavily in November. AllSaints did 30 percent off last year, and they've done it this year but they raised their prices on the same day so it's more like 20 percent! I'm seeing a lot more 20% off than 30 or 40 this time.

I've recently gone through my emails and culled loads but even just eat are having a Black Friday ffs! And some seem to be stuff I've never signed up to! I'm going to see if I can get some deals on dd's presents but only stuff I wanted to buy her anyway.

I hate it and agree something is only a bargain if you wanted it anyway. My bf can't understand why I'm not planning on buying anything but he's far more materialistic than me.

Interestingly, at work today, all my suppliers were desperately trying to link Black Friday to the sale of drill bits or steel tubing - words fail me.

As somebody who has just left the retail sector - I would say at least half of all the stores doing bf deals will have better offers on next week to remedy the lull in sales they'll have because of bf

I'm fed up with the hype. I take the point re my mailing list, which I must have missed building up. Shall do a cull.

It's all stuff I don't need, and the sheer volume of emails is irrationally making me anxious I might be missing something.

I saw an advert on tv the other day for 'Black Friday week'. Week!

I don't mind it massively - I haven't bought anything but can see it's hugely useful if you need to - but I agree the links are getting really tenuous.

The US hasn't had a lull there in decades; it's the most spendy time of the year here. The day after Thanksgiving has long been one of the biggest shopping days of the year, the biggest for some retailers, and for many people, the official start of the Christmas season. "Black Friday" was more or less an "industry term," rather than a sales pitch, since it was the point where some businesses would leap into the black for the fiscal year. There were sales, of course, but it wasn't pitched as a "shopping holiday."

It's also always had an element of insanitylook at the Cabbage Patch Kid riots in the 80'sbut you didn't have people camping out and stuff. Just getting up at 4 or 5 am to go shopping.

It was somewhere in the late 90s or early 2000s so it started to turn into a named thing, with hours that would eventually extend all the way into Thanksgiving, and the claw-your-neighbors-eyes-out-to-get-them doorbusters. (Huge TVs for $200, but a store might only get two or three of them.)

Black Friday is such a load of bollocks which has come across from the USA.

Maybe there are some bargains to be had, but in general, I am cynical and it just all the shite that they have not been able to shift for ages.

Just like the Next sale where you get people queuing at 5am on Boxing Day to buy a load of rubbish that they think they need.
