Black Friday-overhyped.

AIBU to be sick of Black Friday already? Fair enough if you've had your eye on something and it's going down in price but it just seems like a load of excuses to spend money on stuff people don't need. And I'm getting emails saying stuff like its Black Friday- buy a takeaway pizza etc!

I've taken the day off tomorrow so I can browse the Internet all day without being sacked. runs and hides

BewtySkoolDropowt · 24/11/2016 19:27

I'm super excited about Black Friday!!

This year I am remembering that I want to see what Cards Against Humanity do as a Black Friday offer. It's always worth a look...

Black Friday is turning into a week-long "sales event" that is advertised the whole of November. Hate.

stonecircle · 24/11/2016 19:34

Have never paid much attention to it. However, last year I bought two theatre tickets online on BF, without even realising it was BF. When it came to pay, they were half price - front stalls, west end, normally about £80. That was a BF deal. I was delighted!

ShatnersBassoon · 24/11/2016 19:38

Today I bought a tablet (that I was going to buy anyway) at a £60 Black Friday reduction. Suddenly I like Black Friday Grin

gunsandbanjos · 24/11/2016 19:59

It's generally discounts on the crap retailers can't shift. I don't understand the hype myself. People falling over themselves to get a shit tv that they don't need. Just weird.

TotallyOuting · 24/11/2016 20:09

DH and I got two rather nice gaming computers last year and saved craploads of money on them. I like Black Friday. Grin

Manumission · 24/11/2016 20:10

Bewty that's hilarious Smile

RaskolnikovsGarret · 24/11/2016 20:16

Some shops eg All Saints are 30% off everything. I had my eye on a £180 dress, which I got today for £120. And a bag and underwear from Selfridges - I was waiting for their 20% off BF offer, so bought them yesterday.

Won't be buying anything else, but I think it's worth it for things that are otherwise too expensive, and you know their normal price well in advance, so you don't get ripped off.

Sierra259 · 24/11/2016 20:17

DH and I were having this exact conversation last night. I have used it to my advantage if I know there are specific things people want for Christmas and I see them reduced. But mostly it's just to tempt people into spending money they wouldn't have if they didn't think they were getting a bargain.

MsJamieFraser · 24/11/2016 20:21

Any sales are commercialism, it makes no difference to what time of the year it is, or the season they do it in.

However tbf, if I purchased my goods the 4 months compared to the this week then I would have spend £672 more.

Suppose it depends what's you buy.

NancyDonahue · 24/11/2016 20:22

I got some DKNY perfume for dd and her friend discounted on boots.com today. They have £10 worth of points on £60 spend so I did really well out of it.

Polarbearflavour · 24/11/2016 20:25

I feel sorry for retail staff - in the USA, supermarket staff have been killed in stampedes before.

Just a seething mass of humanity scrambling over itself to buy more "stuff".

Starlight2345 · 24/11/2016 20:35

My DS wants a laptop for Christmas..Have been looking for a couple of months.Got it on BF ( week) with £70 off the one I want..I think if you want something then worth a look.

MiddlingMum · 24/11/2016 20:48

I'm boycotting it completely. Deleting all emails as soon as I see them, without reading. Not going to buy anything tomorrow, online or otherwise. Did a food shop today and don't need to go near a shop tomorrow.

Most of it us just unnecessary stuff.

Good for Fat Face. Not really my sort of clothes but I admire their stance.

EssexCat · 24/11/2016 21:00

I run a small jewellery website and have actively decided not to do any BF specific offers. I can't compete against the big brands with major discounts as my year round prices are too low to be able to afford to do that.

Also it's got very tenuous.

Nineloves1 · 25/11/2016 19:07

Whomever pointed out I could unsubscribe, thank you! I had completely forgotten about mailing lists (a good night's sleep is a distant memory) and was sick of all the emails.

I am now happily zapping emails galore. Weirdly satisfying.

Basicbrown · 26/11/2016 07:37

Yanbu op.

I have to go to Birmingham this morning to go to a bloody shop with a 25% off sale. I suspect it will be hell on earth.

bertsdinner · 26/11/2016 07:47

I got a new kettle with 20% off, which I needed. Ive also bought a few Christmas presents that had a bit knocked off.
The emails are annoying, as are the crowds. The city where I work was heaving with shoppers yesterday, roads were busy, it was commuter hell.

ForalltheSaints · 26/11/2016 10:31

I just did not go near the shops yesterday. Almost as bad an imported tradition from the US as Halloween.

exLtEveDallas · 26/11/2016 10:35

I had a classic at work - Black Friday! Supply Teachers with £10 off! Hurrry now!

Oh my Dear God.

Unicorn1981 · 26/11/2016 11:08

Ha ha. That's brilliant!

Waanderlust · 26/11/2016 11:38

I'm not fond of the black Saturday, Sunday, Monday nonsense. It's one day. Theres a reason it's Black Friday.

No one cares if someone boycotts it though.

NotStoppedAllDay · 26/11/2016 11:50

20% off is just s standard 'sale' tho.

Unless it's more than 70% off I don't find it special

TotallyOuting · 26/11/2016 15:40

Got just shy of 40% off a new fridge (been wanting one since I moved in here over four years ago!), I'm happy. Grin
