Teacher making comments relating to pupils periods?

Meadows76 · 24/11/2016 16:16

Fuck. DD came home today and casually (whilst ranting about her English lesson) mentioned that her teacher had said something about her mood and what week it was. I can't remember the exact wording of it, but it was a direct dig at the fact that she may be on her period, which as it happens, she is.

Totally out of order?

I suspect that when the head teacher hears that a teacher has been asking female students about their reproductive cycle he will be in for a proper bollocking and rightly so.

If the head doesn't appear to be taking you seriously, tell them you will have to take it to the board of governors as a safeguarding issue. That should make them pay attention. Flowers

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2016 16:47

Good for you OP. I had a horribly sexist teacher at school ("why are there so many girls in this maths class?" WTF?) and was very let down when I complained about him. Because I had answered back to him.

Definitely complain.

MrsJayy · 24/11/2016 16:49

Oh i see you have contacted school good for you

kaitlinktm · 24/11/2016 16:50

Yes - out of order (I would be interested to know approx how old the teacher is, just out of interest).

FAIRYFRETGNIKCUF · 24/11/2016 16:52

What an absolute cock!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 24/11/2016 16:53

That's shocking! Please let us know how your interview with the school goes, OP.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/11/2016 16:54

THIS. Also mention ESTYN/OFSTED.

togetherlikeglue · 24/11/2016 16:54

Well done for contacting the school, I hope they take it seriously. Completely out of order, misogynist crap. Feel sorry for your DD and hope the boys in the class don't see it as acceptable behaviour...

I remember being at school and a (male) teacher telling a student who often asked to go to the loo in class and said it was for 'girl reasons' (we were teens) "well Louise if you have your period every week you should go and see the doctor!" It was very uncomfortable Blush

AntiqueSinger · 24/11/2016 16:55

Perhaps the teacher just had an off day. Perhaps he was stressed. I agree his comment was out of order, but I'm not sure its worth getting him disciplined for.

Meadows76 · 24/11/2016 16:57

(I would be interested to know approx how old the teacher is, just out of interest). early to mid 40's at a guess. I met him a couple of weeks back at parents evening.

Having an 'off' day is one thing. People tend not to have random 'misogynist' day.

Lottapianos · 24/11/2016 16:59

Dear me, I would hit the roof. Absolutely right to speak to the Head Teacher and I hope you get a proper hearing too. Vile, nasty, personal and misogynist. No excuses

Meadows76 · 24/11/2016 16:59

Perhaps he was stressed. I agree his comment was out of order, but I'm not sure its worth getting him disciplined for. if the teacher is taking is off days and stress out on the pupils that's even more of a reason to have someone done about it imo.

Perhaps he was having an off day but we all have off days and manage not to say things like this.

kaitlinktm · 24/11/2016 17:00

User 1479...

I had a pupil who did this - it was very disruptive as it set off all the other toilet goers and I got tired of having to start my lesson and explain things a zillion times. Even so, I didn't mention it in class. I did mention it to her HoY who, after enquiries, confirmed she was swinging the lead.

If there is a genuine medical reason, staff would be informed and/or the pupil would have a pass.

If Louise had to go to the loo as often as all that (so presumably it was a more regular disruption than several days once a month) for "girl reasons" then the teacher had a point.

BratFarrarsPony · 24/11/2016 17:02

" . Perhaps he was stressed. "

aww the poor little petal.
Look if a teacher cannot get 'stressed' without making comments about girls' periods, I would suggest he is in the wrong job.

user1479495984 · 24/11/2016 17:04

We only had this teacher once a week, I don't think she asked every week (it was a long time ago) but she was one of the cooler girls who were more likely to stick their head above the parapet. To my knowledge she only mentioned the 'girl problems' when he said no but I still don't think there was any need to say it to the whole class, I was sat near her so heard her comment to him but his was loud.

MrsJayy · 24/11/2016 17:07

Teenagers can be stressful i wouldn't be a teacher however to mention a girls period as an excuse for attitude is totally out of order

Chickoletta · 24/11/2016 17:10

I'm a teacher and agree that this is totally out of line. Personal, sexist and designed to humiliate her. Probably best to complain to Head of Year, copying in Head of English. Things are likely to get dealt with much quicker this way. State in your email that if you do not receive a satisfactory response you will go to the Head and Chair of Governors.

If proven, his head would roll at my school and rightly so.

BoneyBackJefferson · 24/11/2016 17:11

At the risk of being flamed. Please find out all of the facts before going around the official route for complaining.

Trifleorbust · 24/11/2016 17:12

I can't disagree that it's entirely inappropriate if that was the direction of his comment, but how are you going to convince the Head if you can't remember what he said?

mummyharvey · 24/11/2016 17:15

I'd be tempted to tell DD that next time he makes a remark like that reply with "Surely as the adult here, you'd have more experience with those since you seem to be behaving in an equally bitchy manner?"

What a C yoU Next Tuesday. Angry

Meadows76 · 24/11/2016 17:19

but how are you going to convince the Head if you can't remember what he said? DD and half the class know what was said. I couldnt remember exactly and she had already gone out when I started the post.
