But it's OUR drive...

Our drive is directly opposite the drive of the house opposite, it's a quite, dead end street so not much traffic. When I reverse off if, I turn as I do so that I'm facing the right way on the road and then off I go, the person who lives opposite however (in his perfect BMW with private plates...) doesn't do this. He instead reverses straight across the road, onto OUR drive, then drives off again.

Normally this only annoys me a little, but today, as I was reversing out of our garage I noticed he had his reverse logged on and then started moving so I stopped outside of the garage, on the drive. By the time I'd stopped, I noticed that he was fully back on his own drive. So because he saw I was going to be in his way, instead of reversing properly, onto the road instead of someone else's property, he went back out of reverse, and drove back on.

So being annoyed, I waited. And waited. And the insert name for irritating person here waited too. Eventually I had to leave, shaking my head at him, and watched in my mirrors as he priced he had been specifically waiting for our drive by reversing straight across as usual.

AIBU to be annoyed about this? It's our private property, that we have to pay to buy and maintain? I know it's quite a little thing and it doesn't usually bother me too much more than a minor irritation, but today it really infuriated me.

He has private plates. That tells you all you need to know about him!

Inertia · 22/11/2016 12:34

Can you arrange to go into work later in the morning, get your car out of the garage and put it on the end of the drive, then go back indoors for a cup of tea?

DinosaursRoar · 22/11/2016 12:35

Park at the end of your drive - go out there now and move your car. Park it there every day until he learns how to reverse off his drive like a normal person.

That or install gates.

(this would bring out the pettiness in me too)

user1477282676 · 22/11/2016 12:36

Get one of those chains to go across the drive. I've always wondered why people have those...now I know!

But really....why do you care?

MrsExpo · 22/11/2016 12:37

This would drive me nuts too. If there is enough space for you to get out of your drive, then there's enough space for him to do the same.

Man up and ask him to stop doing it. Or take some passive action like bins or bollards to stop him. We have a similar issue with our neighbour parking right on our communal boundary between two open plan drive ways. He can't get out of his car without walking on our property. Drives me nuts ....

Take action. Good luck.

Tenpastlate · 22/11/2016 12:39

YABU for parking your car in your garage like an old person Grin

Seriously though, this would irritate me too. Next bin day, leave your bins out across your driveway for a day or two.

I don't know why you didn't walk up to his car, knock on his window and ask if he'd like you to give him some lessons on how to reverse/drive his car as he is clearly struggling seeing as he has to use your drive every time just to exit his.
Said whilst smiling sweetly with a head tilt.

Bluntness100 · 22/11/2016 12:41

Honestly, I'm struggling to see the issue also, so he reverses straight back and out, and he drives on your drive to do so, does it really matter? Really?

Today he was probably waiting for uou to go, letting uou do what you need to do first. I just don't get the big deal. It's not like he parks in your drive, he simply drives over for a few seconds. Generally he causes you no inconvenience or damage to your property.

If you go over there and ask him not to he is going to think you're petty and a bit weird.

ZoFloMoFo · 22/11/2016 12:42

I would have had to cancel whatever I was going out for, parked at the end of the drive, given him a cheery wave and gone inside to watch from an upstairs window to see what he did.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 22/11/2016 12:42

I'm bound to be in the minority on this but I just can't imagine mustering enough energy to care about it!

If it annoys you I suggest you do one of the following:

a) politely ask him not to do it.
b) park at the bottom of your own drive so he can't.
c) get some gates or a bollard or a cone and put it on the drive

CondensedMilkSarnies · 22/11/2016 12:42

Someone has parked on my driveway this morning ! I hope for their sake they've gone before my DD gets home from work ! I wouldn't want to be in their shoes when she finds she can't park her car !!

An englishman's home might be his castle but driveways are a very close second .

Ifailed · 22/11/2016 12:43

YABU, and should be grateful that this is all you have to whinge about.

WatchingFromTheWings · 22/11/2016 12:45

I'd get gates put up. Or if finances won't allow for that just yet, a chain.

ShotsFired · 22/11/2016 12:46

To all the pp who are snarking at the OP for this (bigger problems etc type comments), maybe you should try paying hundreds of thousands of pounds for a facility that you have to maintain and then watch someone (or someones) use it and cause wear and tear every single day. Angry

If those someones like a driveway (or whatever it is) so much, they should pay to get their own one, and then the world and his wife can drive on it every day and see how they like it.

And also read this: rationalwiki.org/wiki/Not_as_bad_as

Bettersleepoutdoors · 22/11/2016 12:47

Is it not safer to reverse onto another driveway than straight onto the road?

FrankAndBeans · 22/11/2016 12:48

hundreds of thousands of pounds
Wtf have you paved your driveway with, gold?!
Calm down.

Bluntness100 · 22/11/2016 12:49

Shotsfired, well I'm not sure they paid hundreds of thousands for their drive, but take your word for that, but I can say a normal reverse on and off will cause little to no wear and tear.

JenLindleyShitMom · 22/11/2016 12:50

Start reversing on to his. Maybe linger there a while to answer you phone and chat with your aunt who can talk for England. Fix your make up, look for something in your massively handbag, remember you left something in you house so abandon car in his drive and run back to your house to get it.

If he can use your drive as he pleases then you can use his as you please.

Or get gates

Grin
BigPantyGirl · 22/11/2016 12:52

YANBU, I'd be irritated too, but then I do have pmt at the moment! Park in your drive for a few days, instead of your garage. Hopefully he'll get the message.

baconandeggies · 22/11/2016 12:52

but I can say a normal reverse on and off will cause little to no wear and tear.

That's not really the point though, is it?

BikeRunSki · 22/11/2016 12:53

Do it back to him

RandomMess · 22/11/2016 12:55

I too thought - perfect reason to invest in a Penguin Bollard!

Bertucci · 22/11/2016 12:58

Gosh, really.

I just couldn't be bothered to be bothered. It's too petty.

WellErrr · 22/11/2016 12:59

Are his tyres made of grappling hooks?

Totally failing to see the issue here.
