His bit with Rinder made me cringe so hard.

That kind of 'humour' based on the idea that gay men are predatory sex pests belongs in the 70's with Alf Garnett type sitcoms rather than 2016 doesn't it? Felt dated, lazy and really awkward.

Not that I expect Peter Kay to be at the cutting edge of comedy of course but still.

Just me?

Apparently he is a barrister randomer which is a small consolation but still a bit of a disappointment Sad

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2016 20:36

"We laughed at PK. But we are old."

So am I. I didn't. But then I don't think age is an excuse.

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2016 20:37

I think he's an expert in international tax law.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/11/2016 20:37

yes I agree Bert - I am 46 - grew up with 1970's humour - but that doesn't mean I find 1970's humour acceptable in 2016

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 20/11/2016 20:39

Think he was a criminal barrister? Least that's what it says on ITV at 2pm...!

No one has really explained why the joke was funny... shame that.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 20/11/2016 20:39

I'm not surprised Bert.

Matchingbluesocks · 20/11/2016 21:16

He's an very successful,
Well respected barrister

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 20/11/2016 21:25

Not round our house he's not.

ChunkyMcBitch · 20/11/2016 22:53

Well as someone who doesn't watch Strictly, I am now aware that PK has a new show soon. So his work is done even if he had to resort to lowest common denominator

SapphireStrange · 21/11/2016 10:14

Yes, good point. I'm all ears...

MalmseyWhine · 21/11/2016 10:29

I thought all the laughter was because PK was cocking up the phone vote T&Cs (which really would cause the BBC to go into panic mode).

Personally I thought the funniest thing was Cloudier Fragapane not having a clue who he was.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2016 11:34

It was funny because it suggested that gay men are all sexually rapacious. That sort of thing is utterly hilarious!!!!!!!!!

FRETGNIKCUF · 21/11/2016 11:39

FFS. The joke is nothing to do with Rinder being gay, it was a joke about someone being behind him and pinching his arse. Whether you find it funny is up to you..... but nothing is funny if it needs explanation and humour is subjective.

I didn't laugh at that bit but I managed not to clutch my pearls either. Weird. Something not being funny and yet still not worthy of offence or outrage.....

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2016 11:45

"The joke is nothing to do with Rinder being gay, it was a joke about someone being behind him and pinching his arse"

So, if it had been one of the woman professionals behind him and he had pretended she had pinched his arse he still would have said "Steady. This case is firmly closed" would he?

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 21/11/2016 11:45

Fretgnikcuf - when Jimmy Saville pinched a girls arse on telly, it was then used as evidence of his history of brazen sexual assault. Peter Kay pretends someone has pinched his arse on telly and somehow it's funny?
The funny part is, he had to move Claudia out of the way so he could get near the gay man to make said "joke".

Or maybe the funniest part is that those who actually don't think it's funny and think it's stupid and outdated are being told they're "clutching pearls" and to get a sense of humour. Because they don't think it's funny. Hmm

Fwiw - Rinder's massive grin and roaring laughter was the most uncomfortable thing about it.

FRETGNIKCUF · 21/11/2016 11:48

Hang on.... pinching someone's arse is nothing like pretending a grown adult has pinched yours. It's not homophobic.

Rinder is a judge..... if any one of the celebrities was in the legal profession he would have said it.

I'm just not buying it that PK his homophobic and that the joke was based upon vile stereotypes about gay men, not for one second am I seeing that.

FRETGNIKCUF · 21/11/2016 11:48

PK is

FRETGNIKCUF · 21/11/2016 11:49

No one has said you don't have a sense of humour, I didn't find it particularly funny either.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2016 11:52

And the "this case is firmly closed" remark?

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 21/11/2016 11:52

Soo why didn't he make the same joke when Claudia was next to him...why move her out of the way to go and stand by the gay man and deliver a double entendre, one of which (certainly where I live) is a reference to homosexuality Hmm

FRETGNIKCUF · 21/11/2016 12:31

He also said something nice....

I think if you really want to paint PK as a homophobic twat, you carry on. I'm just not joining in as this incident is easily mis interpreted, and I've never seen anything he's doing before to suggest he's homophobic.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2016 12:35

"And the "this case is firmly closed" remark?"

Do you genuinely think there is nothing homophobic about that remark?

FRETGNIKCUF · 21/11/2016 12:38

I think it's a reference to him being a judge.

When have you considered PK homophobic before?

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 21/11/2016 12:39

I'm not trying to paint him as anything Hmm read back, where exactly have I said he's homophobic? I haven't.

I'm genuinely curious as to how it was a) funny. And b) not poking fun at homosexuality.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2016 12:44

So. Peter Kay moves people aside so that he can stand next to a gay man. He pretends to have his bottom pinched by said gay man. And he then says "Steady-this case is firmly closed"

And that is nothing to do with the fact that the man is gay. Just a passing reference to the gay man being a lawyer.

Honestly- when you look at it set out like that, does it look even remotely credible?
