House of Fraser ad - steaming pile of wank?

Don't watch much tv but this ad has just stuck out for me - in that I want to hurl something at the telebox every time it's on. It's awful.
Who is it aimed at?
Does anyone like it?
Why?

It's rather poor. In fact they all are this year.

QueenLaBeefah · 19/11/2016 17:47

I feel fairly neutral about the HofF ad but my 15yr old son thinks it's great. Shame he only has a Primark budget.

QueenLaBeefah · 19/11/2016 17:50

Although the worst advert has to go to Tesco. The actors have zero chemistry together and is completely unbelievable. (I normally love Ruth Jones too).

desperatehousewife2 · 19/11/2016 17:51

I really like the HoF advert! Don't like the Sainsbury's one though. It's just so.... meh. It's not catchy or heartwarming or funny or anything

QueenOfTheNaps · 19/11/2016 17:54

Ah of courrrrse the bears was for Heathrow... thanks Millie completely makes sense!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/11/2016 17:54

As for target audience I can't afford anything in HofF anyway let alone your average 20 something.

anotheronebitthedust · 19/11/2016 17:55

surferjet - I see your point but surely middle aged Mnetter is more of the target market for Hof than cool twenty something - most of whom wouldn't dream of shopping there? So it's a bit random...

Have people seen the thing going round twitter from the Sainsbury's employee who (quite fairly imho) pointed out the hypocrisy of the ad focusing on the importance of a dad spending time with his family at Christmas rather than being in work or going round the shops buying presents, while expecting their staff to work Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

MitzyLeFrouf · 19/11/2016 18:05

Yep it's an annoying ad. And doesn't fit the HoF image at all which is such bland, middle of the road department store.

surferjet · 19/11/2016 18:10

They obviously don't see themselves as bland & middle of the road going by their advertising?

MitzyLeFrouf · 19/11/2016 18:12

They know they're bland and middle of the road but they're hoping this ad will persuade people otherwise. Until they set foot in the shop that is.

It's a lot easier to pay an ad agency to come up with a high impact ad than it is to overhaul your entire brand.

MitzyLeFrouf · 19/11/2016 18:13

But it's not as bad as the M&S ad. That kid needs a good shake.

surferjet · 19/11/2016 18:17

HoF is a really nice department store imo. A good range for all ages, so not really getting the 'bland' bit.
I mean, how 'sexy' can a shop be? Confused

peachesandcreamdream · 19/11/2016 18:19

I quite like the HofF advert Blush

MitzyLeFrouf · 19/11/2016 18:29

There's nothing wrong with HoF, it's a steady middle of the road department store. It isn't slick or edgy however, so there's a disconnect between this ad and the reality of being in one of their shops.

Don't like the HoF one. And I find myself irrationally enraged by the singer's pronunciation saying 'com' instead of 'come'.

The Tesco one is pants - but all of the Tesco ones are.

Haven't seen any of the others yet.

SaagMasala · 19/11/2016 18:42

Mitzy that's the take I have on it.

The ad just makes me think they want trendy young professionals.
That they don't want ME.

So I don't want to even venture inside now.

I also find the song overly aggressive. I loved last year's song and thought it did benefit from a similar edgy treatment (I remember the original) but that was more to do with the song/lyrics itself.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 19/11/2016 18:49

Oh dear, that's pretty dreadful. I usually like that song too but that's an awful version of it. I like the JL and Aldi ads but the rest can sod off. Particularly the overly long Corden- indulgent Sainsbury's one. Ugh.

OrangeKitchen · 19/11/2016 18:53

So the ad is aimed at teens/twenties?

But their stock isn't teens/twenties?

Confused

Isitadoubleentendre · 19/11/2016 18:59

But they obviously aren't interested in the over 40's white middle class any more.

'White middle class'? Is this because some of the people in the ad were Shock not white? Why would this make you think the ad is not aimed at white people?

I thought it was ok, not really offensive nor particularly inspired. I think there is plenty in HOF for twenty somethings. In fact when I was at uni I used to shop in there loads.

The main thing I noticed was that the main girl in the ad had an amazing cheek highlight!

surferjet · 19/11/2016 18:59

It's aimed at the lively, funky, fun, older person.

OrangeKitchen · 19/11/2016 19:10

Well I'm certainly not lively, funky or fun anymore although I could be if I got the chance so maybe that's why I just don't get it. I will make an effort to see it from a different point of view.

I liked it, a good song and dance, better than computer generated effects of foxes jumping up and down or a bird getting wet flying over the ocean.

RortyCrankle · 19/11/2016 19:15

I really dislike the HoF and Sainsburys ads. Love the John Lewis ad and this spoof of it is really funny Grin www.facebook.com/manstuff/videos/1346689075365535/

TheSpottedZebra · 19/11/2016 19:21

Last year's music was You Don't Own Me, wasn't t?
