To be disappointed with M&S Advent Calendar!

MNRandom · 19/11/2016 14:54

£35.00 with £35.00 & over purchase of women's wear.

Each item averages at £1.40.

M&S claim the contents are valued at £250.00 which makes each item worth £10.00.

Sorry M&S, I don't believe you! Nail polishes (rubbish colours), nail file, v v v small serum etc.

I looked on the website and customers are giving it 5* Confused

Anyone else succumbed ?
What's your thoughts?
Which advent calendar would you splurge on?

The Liberty one looked great (much more pricey, but genuine valued items). Sold out though.

I love it! I think it's well worth the money as they are top brands inside and some are a decent size.

MNRandom · 19/11/2016 22:08

I have not seen/heard about Ciate or NYX advent calendars. Anyone got pictures they can share please?

I had a sneak peak at 6 or 7 items and all were tiny. DH has told me off and said I need to open on its proper day 'or its bad luck' Hmm

I have been given the Jo Malone one.
It's beautiful. Yes it's an extravagant luxury.

excited

WamBamThankYouMaam · 19/11/2016 22:53

I have the lego star wars one, the truffles for 2 from hotel chocolat and the make up revolution one.

I like little treats. I contemplated the gin one too.

woodhill · 20/11/2016 08:39

I have the M&S one. I will gift any stuff I don't need. I am really looking forward to it.

rookiemere · 20/11/2016 08:59

I usually get the Hotel Chocolat one but no longer eat sugar so treated myself to M&S instead. It is expensive but I am looking forward to it. I do like the idea of keeping it for a grim month , but for me thats November and I can't hold out until then !

MNRandom · 20/11/2016 09:11

Wambam' they do a gin one? Shock Grin

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/11/2016 09:25

theres a few gin ones this year

SporkLife · 20/11/2016 09:57

I have a stationary one by smiggle and a Lego one for this year for myself! Love a good advent calendar!

BusterGonad · 20/11/2016 10:00

I can't wait for mine,I'm using it next year. Won't even see it until June next year! It's at my mums house. Grin

Pomegranatepompom · 20/11/2016 20:17

I'm trying not to look too closely at the products (walked past a display instore today). I liked most of the products last year and so am mildly optimistic!

Cuttysarky · 20/11/2016 23:26

I bought this and accidentally(!) opened it all today, mainly because I wanted to peek at one or two things, then I started realising I just bought a bunch of nonsense I don't need... though I realise it would be great for some people, I know I won't use most of it and only want three of the products! Can I return this if the sellotape at the side has been opened?? You can tell it's been opened because some of the red cardboard has stuck onto the sellotape bits, anyone successfully returned after opening? Also, I know there's lots on eBay, some aren't selling at all, whereas some more expensively listed ones are getting lots of bids, why is this? What am I missing?Confused

MNRandom · 21/11/2016 05:56

Cutty' you could wrap it all back up and take it back. Say you feel it wasn't value for money or something similar. I thought about taking mine back but decided against it.

After taking a sneak peek at some of the items in mine, it's all in one piece again and I'm going to open it each day. As I have amnesia I will still have a daily surprise gift but I am prepared to be disappointed allover again Grin

Jo Malone Advent Calendar Shock

How can its contents be worth £250? Ok, if they were full-size they would, but they aren't, so surely this is misrepresentation?

As nearly everything is sample sized (therefore would have been given away as freebies) the few full-size bits won't be worth £250 in my opinion.

I think there's going to be thousands of the boxes going very cheap before long; BF said there were literally mountains of them in her local M&S and she didn't see anyone buying them.

daisychain01 · 21/11/2016 12:20

It just seems like a combination of rampant consumerism and infantilising grown women

I would have said it infantilises grown women who are sentient adults, to deem that they can't exercise their choice in how they spend their hard earned cash. They aren't forced to buy those products with the M&S gun to their head, are they?

I think all that stuff is indeed clutter and marketing tut but I don't feel I have the right to judge others for the choice they make. And the occasional frivolity at Christmas isn't the end of the world

daisychain01 · 21/11/2016 12:26

Last year's gaff was the box of wine biscuits and chocolates. Not a problem in itself, but how does it make commercial sense for a customer to buy several things in different departments and get a box with each purchase.

We went away with 4 boxes which we shared with family and friends but the marketing bods ought to have thought through it a bit more carefully.

BrightYellowSunrise · 21/11/2016 13:41

The only annoying thing for me about the M&S one is the CLEAR eyebrow gel. What's the point of that!!?

MrsHathaway · 21/11/2016 14:16

The Gallagher brothers and I have need of clear eyebrow gel, to lock the hairs into place and not have them off Wookieeing on their own.

They're quite dark enough and don't need any further colour.

MNRandom · 21/11/2016 19:36

The wine and biscuits last year were fab. Weren't they free?

After reading this thread, I'm thinking about buying a nice advert calendar for myself.

Not keen on makeup/booze/candles so was thinking of nice chocolate one?

BabyGanoush · 29/11/2016 16:08

Montezuma's do a lovely Chocolate one (containing 250grams of choice, instead of the standard measly 80 grams).

I bought myself the M&S one today

Just fancied it, will open one a day.

Love trying out new beauty stuff, and use up loads (swim 2/3 times a week and slather on anything afterwards Grin)

They will probably get discounted soon, as they had 100s left!

DemonLizzle · 07/12/2016 20:29

Days 1 - 7. Not bad at all :).

bertsdinner · 07/12/2016 21:20

Ive got the Hotel Choc advent calendar, the truffles for 2 one. Ive always fancied it but it's a bit disappointing to be honest. I prefer the Thorntons one I got from work, ok, the choc isnt as nice, but it has pics behind each window. The Hotel Chocolat one just has a lame cliche written behind each of the windows.
