To be disappointed with M&S Advent Calendar!

MNRandom · 19/11/2016 14:54

£35.00 with £35.00 & over purchase of women's wear.

Each item averages at £1.40.

M&S claim the contents are valued at £250.00 which makes each item worth £10.00.

Sorry M&S, I don't believe you! Nail polishes (rubbish colours), nail file, v v v small serum etc.

I looked on the website and customers are giving it 5* Confused

Anyone else succumbed ?
What's your thoughts?
Which advent calendar would you splurge on?

The Liberty one looked great (much more pricey, but genuine valued items). Sold out though.

Buggers, just nearly dropped my iPad in the spag' bol' I'm making. Serves me right for reading the thread whilst stirring

Soap and glory should do one! I love all their stuff!

Judydreamsofhorses · 19/11/2016 16:00

I love the idea of little "presents" every day, but would rather spend the £35 on one lovely thing I really want instead of a load of stuff which I won't like/use 50% of. I feel the same about beauty subscription boxes.

FinderofNeedles · 19/11/2016 16:02

Ledeluge My thoughts exactly. Another 'advent calendar' Scrooge here. When I was at school 100 years ago advent calendars were 2-dimensional card and had nothing 'inside' apart from a picture, because there was no 'inside' to put anything in!

Chocolate ones seemed such a luxury when we first had one.

I bought my DD an advent calendar which comprises tiny books which tell the story of The Nutcracker. It's been brought out every year for the past 23 years, and this year will be no different.

I don't think this is the thread for me!

PicardsCombOver · 19/11/2016 16:05

Finder I love the idea of your storybook calender!
I don't want ladylike cosmetic or candle stuff in my calendar ... I want the play doh one Blush

slightlypeevedwombat · 19/11/2016 16:08

", but after seeing it got 5* on their site decided not to for fear of being thought mean""

sorry what? you didnt return something you didnt think was value for money, because you thought someone might judge you for being mean????

MNRandom · 19/11/2016 16:12

Yep Slightlypeeved' that's right. Although I know that sounds like 'I'm not right'.

I couldn't see the value - it's actually £70 you have to spend so certainly not worth it. I thought the display of the contents made it look pretty pathetic, and there were 100's of them stacked on every floor in my local store.

just call me Scrooge 😚

timeforabrewnow · 19/11/2016 16:21

You bunch of miserable bastards!! I got an M and S calendar and was sooo looking forward to Dec 1st to start opening the boxes, and now you're telling me it's all a load of old rubbish?? Sad Sad Sad Waaaaaah

Still, to be fair - I have £35 only for it (not £70) as the other 2 things I bought were presents for people that I would have got anyway.

[I knew I shouldn't have come on this thread]

timeforabrewnow · 19/11/2016 16:21

*paid

If it's any help to anyone, I've heard the Boots No7 one is good. Personally I love Advent calendars, but just get myself a traditional one. This year's is by Angela Harding because I love her work.

Like MUjunkie, I love Soap & Glory, but I told myself I wasn't going to get the Boots Star Gift this year because I don't use some of the stuff, then I went in last week and saw it comes in a really cute suitcase which I can use for storage afterwards, so I'm sure I will succumb. Blush

limitedperiodonly · 19/11/2016 16:29

I wouldn't buy it for myself of anyone else, but if someone wanted to give it to me I'd be happy. I'd be thrilled with the Liberty one.

I like dinky little beauty products, especially expensive things, and like pretty packaging. If they're no good for me, I can always try them or give them away.

I'm typing this while feeding my lizard-like hands with an Elemis cream meant for feet that I got as a present from someone who knows I like stuff like that.

WalterWhitesNipple · 19/11/2016 16:29

I used to work in m&s and the products are actually worth £250. The nail polish might not be but another product will be worth more to make the overall value. Plus you can see exactly what you will receive before you purchase so can't really be disappointed...

MNRandom · 19/11/2016 16:30

Sorry time' Blush

I wonder if they will end up reducing them if there are still loads left in stores at the beginning of December? I was tempted but was put off by the additional £35 spend. I ended up spending £70 elsewhere on full-size beauty products that I actually wanted.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/11/2016 16:31

I dithered for ages in the shop last week over one - I bought some boots anyway so could have had one, but I only wanted about 3 of the products - I don't wear make up or use expensive serums but am a sucker for Burts Bees products and hand cream.

In the end I didn't, but possibly wish I had - they are going for £60-70 on ebay so I could have sold it, probably cleared about £20 profit and used that to buy a couple of the things I actually wanted - I'm not at all bothered about the charade of getting a 'surprise' every day in December - I'm 43 not 3.

But it's not like it's sold out everywhere - according to the M&S website, there are nearly 2000 of them in stock in total at my nearest 2 M&S stores, even if it is sold out online.

MNRandom · 19/11/2016 16:31

The Liberty one looks amazing Limited'

Can't believe you already opened it! I got my mum no7 and I have the tinc one.

Nuxe dry oil is lovely though, and fairly cheap on Amazon.

TheRunningSloth · 19/11/2016 16:32

I was tempted, glad I didn't now though.

I've got the Benefit & Molton brown one instead this year, as birthday presents (because I'm too tight to buy them myself) Grin

Sciurus83 · 19/11/2016 16:33

I'm loving mine! And I'm having it this month because out of the country in December. There are some great brands and products, the £ amount is worked out from full size, if beauty isn't your thing I can see you might not like it, but then why buy it?! I think it's a good price, it is bringing me lots of joy every day and there are things which I really want travel sizes of, worth it IMHO but each to their own.

loveliesbleeding1 · 19/11/2016 16:33

I went and had a look at the display because I was buying some bits anyway and I wasn't too impressed. I bought the yankee one instead.

BakeOffBiscuits · 19/11/2016 16:34

I just couldn't be bothered with all those tiny bottles of stuff. I had a look at them in M&S and it made me panic about where I'd put it allGrin

thethoughtfox · 19/11/2016 16:35

The Charlotte Tilbury one is £160 and it's all sample sizes with maybe one full size product. So not worth it.

Lilaclily · 19/11/2016 16:40

What time is nuxe dry oil for please?

Lilaclily · 19/11/2016 16:41

Sorry typo! What's it used for?
