AIBU?

AIBU to serve up a cake that has contact glitter on it instead of edible?

I have made a birthday cake for my DD but on reading the glitter pot that I thought was edible glitter it says it's "food contact glitter for removable cake decorations"!!
I bought it in a bit of a rush and because it was with all the food colours I just assumed it was edible. Now I've read the pot afterwards and not sure if I should serve it up. It took so long to make and looks really pretty! The website says its non-toxic so what harm could it do? Glittery poo?!

The only problem I could foresee is if someone was allergic (?) but how on earth could you find that out?

By their going into anaphylactic shock?

It's seriously irresponsible not to declare ingredients these days as people can have such severe allergies.

Personally I would display it at the party, buy a shop cake to give to all the other children, and then the family can eat up the original cake with or without the icing as they prefer.

YABU to make a Christmas cake in November Grin Looks great though. I don't eat the icing anyway - I thought most people didn't so I would probably take the glitter bit off when I served it.

As someone already said edible glitter is just non toxic, i.e. Will do no hard just go straight through, this will be the same thing, I think they no longer sell 'edible' glitter something to do with it having no nutritional value! I can't remember the particulars

I've eaten that exact glitter loads of times Shock

We've bought it for Christmas cakes and it never occurred to me it was not fit to sprinkle all over the cake. So I gave not only eaten it, but served it to my entire family including elderly relatives, year after year.

We're all still alive but I guess I ought to get something different this year Blush

The cake is amazing, btw. I'd serve it.

OP - I was assuming a round flat topped cake so the icing could be lifted off after the ceremonial candles and the singing of Happy Birthday!🎼🎉
Oh no, your fab cake is VERY different and clearly the dazzling product of many hours of loving work. As lots of others have said, do the singing and blowing out the candles. Have an undecorated (or simply iced) delicious cake in the kitchen ready to be sliced, wrapped and popped into party bags. Even a cupcake each iced with the child's initials, would be fine. IMHO!
I won't embarrass myself by mentioning cup cakes with edible decals of characters on top though many children actually find them acceptable, exciting even!
Your lovely cake could, later, be scooped out from underneath and enjoyed as a parents' perk, perhaps a glass with of something bubbly!🍥🍰🍾
Have a great party! 🎉🎁🛍🎉

Going to a darkened room to ponder why ANYONE, EVER, would want to produce sparkly poo! Noooo!

I wouldn't use it at all - you need to take it all off I think ..... I hate edible glitter and sprays and everything like that anyway - personally think cake should be as natural as possible and not contaminated with chemicals if it can be helped

Was wondering why you didn't just scrape it off, until I saw it. I'm sure your DD will love it. I'm sure I've used that glitter on cakes too for the school fair - whoops

Great cake! I'd probably whip it away after blowing out candles and not serve it.

I'm making a glittery cake this weekend with edible glitter. I'm hoping all the parents will have seen this thread and refuse to eat it so I can take it home and scoff the lot!

Im still standing by the way - as are the 50 other people who also ate it!! Grin

Well I don't think you can get away with serving it and not confessing now you've posted a picture on here. Take a spare and let others make their own decision.

This reminds me of the poster who went for a smear test or something with a glittery foof. Can't even remember how it happened now, maybe she ate a bit of glittery cake!!!

I would prefer to be told if I was a guest. I would marvel at your cleverness at making a cake like that, thank you for being honest about the glitter, and eat round the icing. No harm done. No glittery shit (or foof!)

CurlyhairedAssassin - laughing at that again .... I think she confused glitter spray with a deodorant/body spray if I remember rightly - made me spit my tea out when I read that the first time haha

If it was for me and mine then I would eat it, but wouldn't want to inflict tummy pain on anyone elses kids and feel the wrath from parents! Easy mistake to make! Your idea of it being a display cake is good.

I think I know which glitter you are on about OP and I've done the same previously. We ate it, and we live to tell the tale.

Live dangerously.

I'm sure we've all eaten much worse and not even been aware of it.
