AIBU to serve up a cake that has contact glitter on it instead of edible?

I have made a birthday cake for my DD but on reading the glitter pot that I thought was edible glitter it says it's "food contact glitter for removable cake decorations"!!
I bought it in a bit of a rush and because it was with all the food colours I just assumed it was edible. Now I've read the pot afterwards and not sure if I should serve it up. It took so long to make and looks really pretty! The website says its non-toxic so what harm could it do? Glittery poo?!

It's absolutely fine to eat. Honestly.

shovetheholly · 17/11/2016 12:57

You can actually buy pellets of non-digestible glitter. Apparently some girls use them so that their poo sparkles.

I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING. IT IS THE APOCALYPSE.

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 17/11/2016 13:02

Id eat it no worries. I've used similar glitter in small amounts in the past without realising you weren't supposed to. I'm still here with no after effects.

Lifeonthefarm · 17/11/2016 13:03

I have that glitter and have served on cup cakes. !! It's non toxic. Just tell people it there choice then.

There is a lot more harmful shite people eat and drink than some glitter. It's not gritty either it's like dust!

Not sure the age range of kids eating it too but the crap that little ones pick up and eat / lick this really is the least of mosts problems

Great cake btw. Don't you dare not serve it.

Lifeonthefarm · 17/11/2016 13:04

Think about those vile silver balls that go on cupcakes. People eat those. They can't be much better

talksensetome · 17/11/2016 13:05

I would serve it. I might think twice if it was a 1st or 2nd birthday but anything over 4 and I would just serve it up.

iMogster · 17/11/2016 13:08

The cake looks amazing and will be brilliant for photos. Definitely scrape off icing in kitchen and then serve slices. Or make some individual cupcakes for the guests/party bags. I wouldn't serve that glitter to a room full of guests, sorry!

Wow,..... you might get actual real Glittery shite :)

Ilovenannyplum · 17/11/2016 13:21

I'd serve it. And eat it Grin

MN....the best way to ease your conscience or ensure a diffusion of responsibility.

Those who can smile in the face of adversity (probably have a scapegoat).

You are only asking others as a result of the amount of time (and costs) that has gone into making the cake. It is lovely, so use it for aesthetic happy birthday purposes and purchase (or make) another to serve to guests.

No need to explain, no need to feel bad IF something happened, you wont become someone else's scapegoat if their child is sick for another reason.....the list could go on and on. Stop kicking yourself and make/buy another so YOU can be totally happy with the serving of cake.

Chemistria · 17/11/2016 13:33

really what's the worst that can happen if you eat it? it's non toxic, i would much rather eat that than "nackeroons" and other things from I'm a celeb last night.

Your cake is beautiful, just let everyone know and if they're worried they can scrape the evil little sparkles off.

Plus if it was that bad they shouldn't be selling it in the edible cake aisle.

weveallkissedafrogor2 · 17/11/2016 13:33

you can buy tablets of 'poo glitter' whats the difference?

weveallkissedafrogor2 · 17/11/2016 13:34

can we see it? pleeeeeease

Northend77 · 17/11/2016 13:36

Regardless of what everyone has said I think you are going to have to tell your guests if you decide to serve it in case any of the parents have been on here and seen it! They'll be waiting to find out what you do on the day!!

FWIW, I would eat it though as pp has said, that much buttercream would be too much for me anyway. But then neither me nor my children suffer from any allergies or food sensitivities and they have eaten MUCH worse off the ground!!

Beautiful cake, well done

minipie · 17/11/2016 13:36

That's an amazing cake! please don't scrape off the icing.

I wouldn't give it to people to eat though.

I'm usually pretty very very unbothered about food safety when it comes to use by dates and the like. However I don't like the idea of eating teeny bits of plastic. They will mostly come out but some will probably stay lodged in the gut for years and we don't really know what the long term effects of that might be.

So - I would do what a few pp said and use this as a "show cake" then take it out back and instead serve a plain cake you've cut up. You could take the show cake home and frame it family can eat it if they are happy to take the risk of the glitter

kali110 · 17/11/2016 13:44

Ong i bought two pots yesterday that i ended up sitting here eating Confused
Dh was even going to go to hobbycraft for me.
Oh well i'll look forward to the results Grin

Lickedthespoon · 17/11/2016 13:44

I've taken non-toxic glitter Poo pills before (joke present) and was absolutely fine and didn't notice a thing in the loo even though that was the idea - there wouldn't be that much glitter on each slice compared to two capsules worth so I'd say go for it! But then, you'd be trusting the lady that took glitter Poo pills! Grin

Dagnabit · 17/11/2016 13:51

I would keep the cake and serve it to close friends and family (and laugh off the mistake) then have a sub standard, tasteless supermarket character cake for kids/adults that you don't know so well. That's what I tend to do anyway but prefer to decorate with very edible malteasers

MilkyMamma · 17/11/2016 13:56

Oops...I've used this stuff for years, didn't know it wasn't edible, nothing has happened to anyone who's eaten the cakes/cupcakes, I've used it a LOT! Blush

Gingercat86 · 17/11/2016 14:02

Would be a massive shame not to serve it - it looks amazing! I would sing Happy Birthday with it but have a stand by cake just in case. I recently made a cake like that & used cake decor glitter spray they sell it in Sainsbury's - it doesn't look much but the glittery effect is amazing!

shallichangemyname · 17/11/2016 14:07

fuck me, I have a fantastic collection of this stuff in all sorts of colours, a whole (small) draw of it in fact. I also did a Christmas cake course last week and we used it to make Santa's sleigh glittery. We were told it's edible. Maybe there are two types, I will have to check. Some I bought 3+ years ago, some more recent. I wonder if I have a mixture of the two types - although I do buy it all from the excellent local cake shop and not from anywhere else. None of us have suffered any side effects and I have a nut allergy child and two asthmatics. It's in very small quantities.

I agree, buy another cake, tell parents and let them decide. I'm going to try and post a photo of my glittery santa's sleigh now

shallichangemyname · 17/11/2016 14:09

I hope this works, my glittery xmas cake which I'm now worrying is going to poison everyone (if only I still had in-laws!)

Great cake op. I'd eat it happily there's not going to be that much on each slice can't see it doing any harm
