AIBU to serve up a cake that has contact glitter on it instead of edible?

I have made a birthday cake for my DD but on reading the glitter pot that I thought was edible glitter it says it's "food contact glitter for removable cake decorations"!!
I bought it in a bit of a rush and because it was with all the food colours I just assumed it was edible. Now I've read the pot afterwards and not sure if I should serve it up. It took so long to make and looks really pretty! The website says its non-toxic so what harm could it do? Glittery poo?!

Here is the FSA guidance on baking glitter.

Key points:

  • This applies to home baking as well as commercial products.
  • When ‘for food contact’ is on the label:
Glitters composed of materials that have been safety-approved for contact with food can be applied to removable non-food items, such as artificial flowers, figurine and candle holders which are placed on food for decoration, provided they meet the requirements of food contact materials legislation (European Regulation 1935/2004). They should be labelled ‘For food contact’ (or alternative wording to indicate their use) and include instructions for use which should include an indication that they should not be consumed. The glitter on these products should be fixed so it does not fall onto the food, and it should be clear that the non-food items should be removed entirely from the food before consumption.

I wouldn't think twice about serving it or eating it.

Temporaryname137 · 17/11/2016 09:08

Show it off with candles but buy a big supermarket cake to serve. Sorry OP, whilst I think it would prob be fine, realistically you don't want to risk it. Imagine if one child were to be poorly - how bad would you feel?!

Can we see a cake pic?

QueenOfTheNaps · 17/11/2016 09:09

Serve it, eat it, sh*t glitter!

Honestly, if it's a small amount I wouldn't have a problem with eating it. I've eaten plenty of glittery cupcakes etc that my mum made and after realised it wasn't edible glitter...
it's terribly misleading for it to be in the aisle next to the cake gels etc.
Can we have a pic of the cake please? Grin

Comtesse · 17/11/2016 09:09

YWNBU unless there was tons of glitter on it. Chop the icing off if you are feeling careful. Do NOT throw your lovely cake away - there are some seriously paranoid answers on this thread!

Floggingmolly · 17/11/2016 09:13

Being non-toxic doesn't mean it should be eaten in large quantities Hmm. Children's finger paint is non-toxic, but you'd hardly slather that all over food and eat it, would you?

That is grim.

MuseumOfCurry · 17/11/2016 09:14

it took 8 hours to make!!!

Picture please.

Serve the cake. Really. It's not a big deal.

Probably outed myself now but never mind!

I think it is a big deal and I wouldn't serve it.

IminaPickle · 17/11/2016 09:17

Id love to see a glittery cake picture this grey morning on a diet Sad

sparklyraindeers · 17/11/2016 09:17

It will be fine honestly. As someone else said 3/4 years ago it was sold as edible glitter but they have had to rename it. Still the same glitter.

I used to add a caution note to cakes, edible but not digestible.

As long as it's not tonnes of the stuff it will be fine.

Floggingmolly · 17/11/2016 09:18

I would be bloody annoyed if someone served that to my kids.

Farmmummy · 17/11/2016 09:18

It's non toxic so I'd probably serve to be honest

BastardGoDarkly · 17/11/2016 09:19

Is there not time to scrape it off and redo with edible? I wouldn't serve it, and I'm a right cut corners bastard!

ChrissieLatham · 17/11/2016 09:21

I'm just going to buy a supermarket one and have this one as the display one for candles etc. If people want a slice I'll warn them first and let them decide. I don't honestly think it would cause harm but I wouldn't want my child to be given it without being told. However if I hadn't read the label, I would have unknowingly served it!

I did this by accident for my DS1 cupcakes for his baptism. However I didn't realise until 9 months later!! About 100 people ate them and all were fine.

Note3 · 17/11/2016 09:26

My children have eaten plenty of glitter whilst doing actual arts and crafts. I'm sure they had beautiful sparkly poo had I examined it. I would use the cake you made then just tell the parents the situation and say if they are unsure to just slice off the glittery part before child eats it. You could even do it for them as you are dishing up to put in bags if there are a small number of children at party?

PenguinsandPebbles · 17/11/2016 09:26

It's really bad they don't make it more clear in the stores, but I've had this happen to me too.

Such a dilemma, soon as you do know you have to tell people to give them a choice

I think it will depend on how good it looks PLEASE post a picture Grin

QueenOfTheNaps · 17/11/2016 09:27

Omg it's amazing!!!!!!!!! Please don't throw it away!
But actually, I'd probably have it as the centre piece and would never dream of cutting it anyway. I'd then freeze it and bring it out year after year and look at it if I was ever sad.
Do you get the impression I'm impressed?! GrinGrin

MuseumOfCurry · 17/11/2016 09:31

How are you seeing the cake? I can't see it. I need to see the cake!

Note3 · 17/11/2016 09:32

I can't see it either!

Purplebluebird · 17/11/2016 09:34

No way I would serve cake with inedible glitter on Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 17/11/2016 09:34

Wait, what? There's a picture?! I can't see it!
