Outrageous sexism alert.

I was at an agricultural trade fair/show today (AgriScot). I went to look at quad bikes because ours is knackered. i asked the salesman about one of them. He said, 'Do you want it for a toy?' What would be the perfect MN response?

Have you considered a John Deere Gator instead Derxa much cosier! I saw that! They do look great but we need something smaller and nippier.

Scrowy · 17/11/2016 20:43

Ours is surprisingly nippy actually. It's mainly used over fell ground and copes pretty well with it, also has the added benefit in summer of keeping flies out of your eyes. It isn't small though!

derxa · 17/11/2016 20:51

It isn't small though! Our bike goes in a locked shed thing but it has a narrow entrance. Where do you put the Gator?

OP posts:
Scrowy · 17/11/2016 20:59

Err well we live about 4 miles further than the middle of nowhere so it pretty much lives outside with the keys in it Grin

we have a couple of knackered quad bikes too, I wouldn't say the gator was much wider than them, just longer.

derxa · 17/11/2016 21:02

We're very close to 'civilisation' so it wouldn't stay here for very long.
Bastards

No i can't see the sexism either.
Think you're assuming he wouldn't say it to a man.
It may not be your experience that people get them for fun, but they certainly do by me.
Fucking hate quads

derxa · 17/11/2016 21:18

Think you're assuming he wouldn't say it to a man. He wouldn't.

OP posts:
kali110 · 18/11/2016 02:09

You're assuming he wouldn't. You don't know this.

OlennasWimple · 18/11/2016 03:05

Gosh, Derxa, if only you - or any other posters - had any experience of buying equipment at a trade fair in order to make an informed judgment, eh? Hmm

HeyOverHere · 18/11/2016 05:03

I'm in the states, and over here, that'd be a reasonable question of a man or woman. Probably half of quads, if not more, are sold to people as toys. By asking that, he's helping narrow down which model would be best for you!

But a much better question would've been, "Will it be for work or pleasure?"

Amelie10 · 18/11/2016 08:17

No you didn't mean it as lighthearted op. You came on here thinking everyone was going to be as 'outraged' as you. You wanted a mn response. Luckily the posters put you right. If you are intent on seeing sexism then you can make anything to be.

derxa · 18/11/2016 08:25

Luckily the posters put you right. Well the ones that are farmers didn't put me right.

OP posts:
Im0gen · 18/11/2016 08:29

Or the ones who are not farmers but who live in the country .

Or the ones who don't read the daily mail

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/11/2016 08:38

Dh has one and calls it his toy. The man who delivered it said 'Enjoy your new toy.'

derxa · 18/11/2016 09:04

Dh has one and calls it his toy But why does he have one? If it's just for 'playing on' that's fine. Unfortunately a quad bike bought as a toy here would be a ridiculous waste of money.

OP posts:
HummusForBreakfast · 18/11/2016 09:11

I have to say, no one would call what is a working tool a toy, because you know, its for work, it costs a lot of money and has a very specific purpose (and its not enjoying yourself riding it).

A bit like you wouldn't call the car of a professional racing driver a toy (even though it might be for most people).
Or you would call the computer of a computer programmer a gaming toy.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 18/11/2016 09:52

My response would have been to look at him quizzically and ask 'what makes you think it would be a toy?'

KC225 · 18/11/2016 10:11

Brother was asked the same thing. He openly admitted to wanting another 'boys toy'. He went along with his friend else was looking at buying a couple for quad bike forest rides/tours. Friend was shown different models to my brother.

Not particularly smooth sales patter but wouldn't call it outrageous sexist alert.

derxa · 18/11/2016 10:46

KC225 Where was this?

OP posts:
GruffaloPants · 18/11/2016 10:54

Think people are forgetting that the OP was an an agricultural trade show.

Ridiculous to suggest that most people at at trade show would be assumed to be buying a quad bike as a toy. Even a non country person like me can see that!

Fantasticmissfoxy · 18/11/2016 11:04

I understand why this upset you. I went to the Highland Show at couple of years back, looking at buying a new quad bike, quad spray boom and some cattle handling equipment. (Usually use local dealer but wanted to compare prices etc). I went with my brother who is also in agriculture but as an employee whereas I run my own place. Every single salesman spoke to him and not me. His response was 'I don't know Why you're speaking to me, she's the one whose buying, I've got no money'. And nearly every single one chuckled and kept talking to him. I ordered the new stuff from our local dealer.

HummusForBreakfast · 18/11/2016 11:06

Its the same thing than When you go to a car dealer isnt it?

ego147 · 18/11/2016 13:16

Probably half of quads, if not more, are sold to people as toys

I wonder what that ratio is at agricultural trade shows?

JustAnotherSadOldNumber · 18/11/2016 13:21

I wonder where else he sells them?

derxa · 18/11/2016 16:59

I told my cousin about this today and she thought it was hilarious. She told me the trouble she had buying a power washer. Grin
