I was at an agricultural trade fair/show today (AgriScot). I went to look at quad bikes because ours is knackered. i asked the salesman about one of them. He said, 'Do you want it for a toy?' What would be the perfect MN response?

Perhaps you looked like a townie/hobby farmer OP? I don't think that is necessarily related to your sex.

LineyReborn · 16/11/2016 20:54

Yes, OP, I suspect you turned up looking like an extra from Emmerdale with One Of Those Hats not even a jaunty bonnet and a sullen rural Kevin and Perry combo lurking behind you.

Admit it. The sexist tumbleweeds blowing in to the site demand it.

dudsville · 16/11/2016 20:56

I don't know what a quad bike is.

billyzanescal · 16/11/2016 21:03

It's four pedal bikes strapped together with parcel tape of course.

Writerwannabe83 · 16/11/2016 21:06

I was at work the other day (Im a nurse) and a patient's parents were asking about ward round, they'd been there a few days and were just wondering when the doctors were on the day and I told the child's dad that the Consultant would be round to see them soon and he said to me: "Are they the male doctors?"

I thought that was pretty sexist. He aaa deadly serious when he said it too. God forbid a mere female could be a Consultant...

APlaceOnTheCouch · 16/11/2016 21:33

billy your description made me laugh Grin
I think posters are confusing events like the R H S with the event OP attended. At the former, you get lots of daytrippers (although not usually buying quads or equipment - it's more likely to be some hunter wellies and an ice cream).

HummusForBreakfast · 16/11/2016 21:52

Tinkly I know plenty of farmers (women) who would be even more offended at being taken for 'hobby farmer' than they would at the sexism of the remark. That would be the worst insult ever. (Whereas unfortunately, women are used to sexist remarks)

In either case, the sale man had it totally wrong!

derxa · 17/11/2016 06:29

Well that's more like our current bike but swap the parcel tape with binder twine. Thanks for the comments everyone.

To be frank - I think your a bit paranoid OP.

derxa · 17/11/2016 09:26

To be frank - I think your a bit paranoid OP. Grin I should have put 'light hearted' in the title.

dp is a farmer.

he thinks quad bikes are the best toys ever.

I don't even have a driving license... Blush

sorry, I'm not doing much to help your case op.

were you wearing your standard issue Rydale check shirt, gilet and dubarry boots? Grin

MidniteScribbler · 17/11/2016 09:47

I think that unless you know for sure that he only asked that question of the women, then you can't assume it was sexist. He may have asked the men the same thing.

derxa · 17/11/2016 09:59

were you wearing your standard issue Rydale check shirt, gilet and dubarry boots? Sadly I can't get my fat legs into Dubarry boots

He may have asked the men the same thing. Never in a million years.

OP posts:
HummusForBreakfast · 17/11/2016 11:10

Her may have asked the men in the same question
If he had done that the (men) farmers I know, he would have either been ripped apart or woud have sene them walking away wo a backward glance.

I can promise you, he would NOT have done that to a man.

ParadiseCity · 17/11/2016 11:15

Sounds sexist to me. Like you are a woman therefore don't have a proper job therefore this quad bike is to pass the time while hubby runs the farm. Maybe use it for rounding up kittens or as a whimsical flower planter.

Tropezienne · 17/11/2016 15:19

Sounds sexist to me. Like you are a woman therefore - it must be right?

VestalVirgin · 17/11/2016 15:58

If the farmers on here (including OP) feel that it is sexist, then it probably is.
I would assume that this kind of thing is mostly bought as toy by adult males, but at an agricultural trade fair is a different context.

Sexism can be subtle and conveyed by tone of voice, etc. rather than obvious if quoted. If in doubt, I choose to believe the person who was actually there.

I like the "I will use it to round up toy sheep at my toy sheep farm" response suggestion. Grin

I think people see people roaring up and down on quads as a leisure activity but I think of it as an agricultural vehicle. Well that's what my insurance says.

Iwannabelikecommonpeople · 17/11/2016 17:30

I rather like the phrase "laughed like drains".. totally off topic but noticed this further up thread Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2016 17:53

I'm not sure I've ever seen a quad being used for fun, come to think. Well, except when theres a sheepdog on one, they always look quite pleased about it.

Scrowy · 17/11/2016 19:42

I've got a picture of a sheep standing on our quad bike. It looks like it's trying to figure out how to start it but it was actually trying to steal sheep cake from the bag on the front.

Quad bikes aren't fun. They are cold. Have you considered a John Deere Gator instead Derxa much cosier! until you knock the doors off as you go through a gate

Im0gen · 17/11/2016 19:43

I live in the country and have only seen them used for work . Obviously don't live in right kind of country ...
