Sick child

I suspect IABU but surely an almost 10 year old child can throw up into a bowl that's right next to them and not all over the sodding rug and floor and trail it all over the room and the stairs?

I'm sorry but yabu, I'm an adult and not good at being sick tidily nobody does it on purpose

Yabu. In an ideal world, they'd use the bowl, but it doesn't always work out like that. Being sick is horrible enough, without someone telling you you're doing it all wrong.

Were they on their way to ask for help? It can be scary for a child being violently ill. They may also be feeling so shit they can't think quite straight. It's horrid but have some compassion?

You need a good bucket, higher sides than a bowl and larger area to hit. We have a rather fetching bright orange one in the garage for such occasions.

Drives me batty too but then I read about a child who tried to keep it in because he didn't want to ruin the carpet and choked on his vomit and died. Now I tell the kids to try and get to the loo or hit the bowl but not to worry if they don't.

I'm a tidy spewer, I'm rarely sick but when I am it just sort of comes out, so even if I was sick on the floor there would just be a bit of sick on the floor. When the bloke is sick, it is so violent he literally bursts blood vessels in his face and ends up with a rash, he can be over the toilet and will still need to wipe the room down!
I have before now been sick into a small cup. If you gave him a bowl you'd still have to clean the carpet. Some people just can't help it. Being sick is pants but cleaning up sick is also pants so you're allowed to be as unreasonable as you want on the internet whilst dealing with it!!

My 9yo was sick in the car the other day. Well he was in the car, but he managed to be sick entirely out of the window while strapped into his car seat and moving at speed! I was very impressed.
He wasn't impressed with me though. His first words when I stopped were "I told you I was sick."

Hope that makes you feel better Sherlock! Stomach bugs are horrible and they trigger stuff I think, with me anyway. They can't help it though obviously!

Definitely invest in a good bucket. We use an old celebrations tub and the splashback is exceptional. The only light relief as I gag on the stench of vomit is the irony of the name on the tub. Hope your day is less pukey tomorrow!

A few years ago my then 12yo was feeling really bad so I sent her to bed with a plastic tub, just in case. She left it on the floor at the side of her bed. Her bloody bunk bed. She then woke up feeling sick and proceeded to lean over the rail and hope the tub would 'catch' her offering. I can tell you vomit does indeed bounc right back out of the tub with such force that it can splatter all 4 walls 😡

As someone who has stripped the duvet and PJs from a five year old tonight - I dunno. I'd hope it might get a little more predictable as he gets older!

Balls to buckets - towels are the way forward for untidy chunderers! They can't miss those.

Tiggy that happens more than people realise - not to point of causing death that I know of but certainly choking/causing chest infections by breathing a little in.

I had a horrendous bug about 5 years ago, several times I didn't even get time to sit up in bed let alone aim anywhere!

It honestly does depend on the child - as a children's nurse I can tell you that I have had 3 year olds who are beautifully tidy vomiters and 13 year olds who will projectile everywhere. It's not their fault of course bless them, I know when I'm sick I feel so disoriented and it can be so sudden that accidents don't happen. But it doesn't make it easier for you I am sure, I'm sure you're knackered and dreading the night ahead! Sending you and the DC
