To find it odd my brother still calls family friends

Auntie and Uncle?

Mostly they are a very distant relative but he calmly tells me he saw Auntie Carol and Uncle Colin in Tesco.

I am 35 and he is 38 ffs!

What's wrong with him telling you "calmly" how else should he speak to you?

As for the auntie and Uncle thing, it's just habit. Why should it bother you?

I'm in my 40s and still have an aunt & uncle who I refer to as Aunt Mary and Uncle Bob. It would seem strange to call them by just their names after all this time. I still refer to my mums sister as Aunt Jean too

I do too, and I'm older than him!

I'm 47 and still do this

I call my best friend's Aunty Ann, Aunty Ann. She's not my aunty.

DW did this during the whole life of some of the people who had been her parents' adult friends. I refused to call them Uncle or Auntie, of course, they had not been a part of my childhood.

It's odd at any age.

I'm 52 and call my parents best friends Auntie name and Uncle name (in their 70s) still as we have always called them that and actually they are closer than some real aunts! Why would it bother you?

However Mummy and Daddy should only be used if you're under 10!

Can't see anything odd about it. I Still prefer to use aunty and uncle when talking about the aunty or uncle.

I don't think it odd if others don't.

I'm 38 and still do it. Just the other week I saw my aunt and my mum laughed and said "I really don't think you need to call X auntie any more!" but I said it just sounded too weird to just call her by her first name after all these years!

I have an Aunty Joan who isn't related to me. She was our next door neighbour when we were growing up and I could never think of her as just Joan.

I do this too! It sounds odd and terribly daring to me when I occasionally drop the names. It's just habit.

DH thinks I'm mad, in his family they don't even call real aunts and uncles aunt and uncle!

I have a 40 year old friend who calls her mother mummy.

We have had this debate a few times. My siblings and I always call our aunties and uncles auntie x and uncle x.

My dh thinks we are weird .

I do it too and would find it weird to call them by their first names.

Maybe he's doing it to distinguish them from all the other Colins and Carols you know?

Oh and just to add, we range in age from 30 up to 46.

I can top thatitsgotta I have a friend in her late 50s who calls her mother mummy. Makes me cringe a little.

Nothing wrong with referring to family friend as auntie or uncle OP. I do it.

No, because Aunty Wendy (mum's best friend) is still Aunty Wendy (and Uncle Colin would be Uncle Colin if he wasn't dead) and will still be Aunty Wendy even when she is 90 and I am 55. (Aunty Maureen is also Aunty Maureen, but strangely enough Uncle Noel is now just Noel.)

I cannot contemplate calling them by anything other than Aunty. It's just weird, even though I totally remember Aunty Wendy being my age (because when she was my age she was a Proper Grown Up and I am just faking it)

I call my friend's mum Nanny . She's not my Nanny and I didn't know her as a child.

We have a customer at work who calls her mum 'mummy' and she's in her 60s....

Just asking but if you don't call your parents mummy and daddy what do you call them? Personally I'm not a lover of mum and dad, nor am I fond of the word kids but hey that's just my personal opinion and I wouldn't expect anyone to agree with me but nor would I expect anyone to comment. Surely it's just a matter of personal taste? Fwiw I call my mother by her first name and have no known father.
