From reading MN this morning I fully expected on leaving the house to see people rushing around in a state of hysteria. To see sobbing, devastated people unable to look their daughters in the eye on the school run.

Nope.

Have a grip

Anyone who indulges in that MN cliché of ‘handing out grips’ is invariably a tedious bore.

This.

Seen so many posts about WW3 being the result of this election. But I'm sure WW3 is to be blamed on Brexit, so shouldn't it now be WW4?

user1478551766 · 09/11/2016 20:36

But I'm sure WW3 is to be blamed on Brexit, so shouldn't it now be WW4?

Only if you somehow believe we have already had ww3? Hmm

No I don't think WW3 has happened yet but I'm still being told it's on its way. Aren't things getting really bad now? I guess WW4 will have to wait in the queue. Is that correct?

Or is Brexit cancelled now because of the legal thing? Is that why WW3 is because of Trump?

Or is it because Trump will be President before Brexit can possibly happen so then Brexit will have to cause WW4?

So confused.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 09/11/2016 21:51

The point about WW3 is, there won't be a WW4. Or if there is, it'll be fought with sticks and stones.

TheDowagerCuntess · 10/11/2016 02:16

Gosh, this is going well.

Love the OP calling people stupid and then getting mortally offended when someone gives as good as they get.

Trump is a gasbag, full of bravado and shock value. Pence is the hardcore shit-kicking republican and we should be even more afraid of him.
Abortion rights are history. Womens rights are finished. The women of America are so fucked right now, and half of them chose this. Bad times, people.

TheDowagerCuntess · 11/11/2016 03:11

I can't get my head around the percentage of women that voted for this.

I don't know what they're seeing.

It's true Dixie - it's AWFUL the homophobia. We are British but have a home in the US so I have lots of FB friends I'm from there. The term "Sodomites" is very popular among the religious right and is used with impunity to slur homosexuals (lesbians included which is bizarre) and to "explain" the wrath of God that has apparently been unleashed on the USA ConfusedAngry

It's horrific absolutely horrific.

Backwards fucking idiots.

Elendon · 11/11/2016 09:50

The twitter account of Shawn King is shocking. The rise in fascism is beginning. Thoughts go out to all those who have experienced hatred and especially those in schools and universities. Abhorrent.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 11/11/2016 09:54

that hand out grip phrase irritates to fuck

in fact any MN-only phrase boils my piss

also, people need to be able to express themselves. and if it social media, so be it. Its not unreasonable to have an opinion

gratesnakes · 11/11/2016 09:54

Trump is not a religious nutter. He needed them on his side in order to win the election but none of that stuff will be a priority for him.
There's always a shift to the right when the left has been in power for a while. In both the US and the UK. I am quite old so I've seen it all before.
If Trump grows the economy he may get another term If he fucks it up the Democrats may fight back - with an honest candidate.
In the mean time, better Trump than Cruz!!

AlexaTwoAtT · 11/11/2016 09:55

"Lewwat

Thanks for mocking my spelling. Big of you. Make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Enjoy your wine"

It seems to me you are fair game. At least you didn't apologise for your "typo"...

gratesnakes · 11/11/2016 10:00

Trump is a boor.
He is not a nazi.
He wants to cut taxes build lots of shit and create a boom. He probably also wants the people to love him.
I don't think he has any interest in abortion or LGBT issues but he had to become a republican to become president. I don't think Pence will hold much sway.

CaesiumTime · 11/11/2016 10:04

"Trump is a boor.
He is not a nazi."

He doesn't have to be a far right extremist- but he's given credibility and a voice to those who are. This isn't a typical swing of left to right - Obama had very little power anyway. The current US climate is clearly proto-fascist.

gratesnakes · 11/11/2016 10:16

It's a big country. There may be a few proto-fascists and social media gives them a voice. But the vast majority just voted for a shift to the right and a return to the "American dream". Including the Cubans in Florida for example.
It's not a socialist country and there are a lot of Christians. Some of those people are madly pro-life. They are not fascists though.

gratesnakes you have not seen the America that I have seen. It will not be fascism like we have seen elsewhere but it will be American-style fascism.

www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/2016/05/31/yes-a-trump-presidency-would-bring-fascism-to-america/#54d1dab22a75

American-style fascism

In raising the issue of fascism in connection with Donald Trump and his movement, I am not suggesting that what is happening in the United States replicates in every sense what happened in Italy and Germany. Were a kind of fascism to come to America, it would not look like Italian fascism any more than Italian fascism looked like German fascism.

What I worry about is the moment when Trump, with an angry following that has no allegiance to anyone or anything but him, takes over the extraordinary powers of the American presidency. I worry that at that point our democracy will be in danger in a way that it has not been before. It will be fascism American-style. Or perhaps it will deserve a name of its own. But whatever word one chooses, it will constitute a threat to our democratic institutions.

gratesnakes · 11/11/2016 10:43

We will see. Personally I think the democratic institutions are safe but some of them could probably use a little shake up.
Out of intetest, do you think Assange is a fascist?

CaesiumTime · 11/11/2016 10:57

gratesnakes generally I think terms like fascist are unhelpful - modern politics are more complex than black and white - as you say, America is a big place, States make their own laws that vary widely among them and the cultures do vary widely from State to State. There are hopefully strong liberal pockets that will be redemptive but I see the inside of the sinister far right due to my location in the USA, not the liberal left. And the far right is organised and scary, very scary.

I don't know what to think about Assange, I haven't had time to educate myself to make an informed opinion about him personally. He presents a very very complex set of problems that I don't think can be characterised in any one word.

gratesnakes · 11/11/2016 12:05

Maybe the ultra far right seems organised and scary now but I doubt it will last now youve got he Republicans back in.

Look at UKIP over here now. They literally couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.
