But she's determined. I want to support her I really do but I want her to meet her life long buddies at uni.

Any thoughts ?

Cambridge a nicer, more attractive city IMO.

I'd say exactly the opposite, and I've been to both. Grin

Cambridge has a small and very attractive centre, surrounded by a wilderness of biotech companies and business parks. Oxford is more attractive in a way which extends beyond the environs of Queens College, IMO. Really though, either are great and more alike than they are different - and a lot depends on subject; one or the other has the edge in certain subjects.

Italiangreyhound · 09/11/2016 13:35

Pisssssedofff please try and support her choice of university. Encourage her to ask the right questions, can these be asked by email after the day?

Wherever she ends up I hope she has a great time and makes brilliant friends.

Pleae do not over think who will be her brides maids.

My most significant group of friends were all met when I had my baby (11 years ago) where I live now, and many never went to uni let alone the same small out of the way college I went to. The second mist significant group of friends are from working abroad and the third from my current work. In reality all these relationships were made when I was well past 18.

Let her follow the path that is right for her and hopefully she will make friends with great people on their own paths similar to her path.

So here's I guess another dilemma do I get a tutor to try and push that B into an A* ? I just feel at times she looks like she may combust under the pressure, enough feels like enough but equally if she's so close should I be paying to st least let her try ?

OP posts:
whatsthecomingoverthehill · 09/11/2016 13:39

I think if anything somewhere like Oxford could suit her more than a 'normal' university. There is a higher concentration of super-bright, geeky types and the collegiate system is (in general) very good for giving people a base social scene.

Trifleorbust · 09/11/2016 13:40

There's a big difference between a B grade and an A grade Maths student, OP. Not trying to sound harsh here but Oxford will require your DD to get the A AND pass an additional (very challenging) examination of their own. If she doesn't like it then I would encourage her to investigate other options.

DistanceCall · 09/11/2016 13:40

Some of us made friends after university. Don't try to plan her experience for her, or have expectations for her. It's her life, her choice. Perhaps she'll make lifelong friends, perhaps not. It really is not your business. People are different.

Manumission · 09/11/2016 13:41

Business studies at Oxford? Bs?

pisssed are you on a windup?

eeyoresgrumpierfriend · 09/11/2016 13:41

Um I'm afraid Oxford doesn't do an undergraduate degree in business studies. Are you sure that's the course she is interested in?

MargotMoon · 09/11/2016 13:41

As far as I know you'd need all A* grades to get in to Oxbridge. If she is predicted or thinks she will get a mixture of A/B grades and she didn't like the place why then get a tutor to push her and add pressure? She will need to be academically excellent to succeed there. Maybe better to let her explore other options and let her find her own level at another university?

DrDreReturns · 09/11/2016 13:43

Do you mean Oxford Brookes?

Trifleorbust · 09/11/2016 13:43

I was just thinking Oxford doesn't have Business Studies. You're not meaning Economics, by any chance?

Somerville · 09/11/2016 13:43

This has to be a wind up. well played, OP, I didn't cotton on until business studied and predicted B's.

Manumission · 09/11/2016 13:43

Are you thinking of Economics and Management?

KeyserSophie · 09/11/2016 13:44

Oxford offers business studies for undergraduate?? Really?

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2016 13:45

You've changed your tune-you we're 100% sure she'd get in earlier...

Pisssssedofff · 09/11/2016 13:45

I haven't stuck my nose into this at all, I'm going off what I'm grunted at over breakfast, there must be some sort of Oxford business course she's found

OP posts:
Pisssssedofff · 09/11/2016 13:47

Er no she's not predicted B's in everything. She thinks she will get a B in physics and Maths, Hardly a disappointment in my books and her teachers invited her to this jolly to Oxford today so she can't be far off the mark can she

OP posts:
HostaFireAndIce · 09/11/2016 13:48

If she needs a tutor to get an A in Maths GCSE and wants to go to Oxford to do something (vaguely) Maths related (which in fact they don't offer at Oxford anyway), she's not going to get in even if her tutor does get her an A. I'm also intrigued about this open day which is not listed on the University website.

DrDreReturns · 09/11/2016 13:49

It's not a disappointment op but she will need top top grades (higher than Bs) to get into Oxford.

Pisssssedofff · 09/11/2016 13:49

HostaFireAndIce we've covered the open day ... And yes, fair enough

OP posts:
mumonashoestring · 09/11/2016 13:49

She's not got Oxford Business College mixed up with Oxford University has she? I think before you start worrying about tutoring you need to get straight whether she's looking at Oxford University, Oxford Brookes or Oxford Business College. All different things.

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2016 13:50

Er no she's not predicted B's in everything. She thinks she will get a B in physics and Maths, Hardly a disappointment in my books and her teachers invited her to this jolly to Oxford today so she can't be far off the mark can she

You are totally clueless. Students who apply to Oxford are predicted straight As or A*s. Physics and maths are hard a levels and if she's really worked hard she should be proud if she gets Bs but there's no way that's good enough for Oxford. Going on a trip is not an indication of whether the teachers think she's Oxford material or not.

KeyserSophie · 09/11/2016 13:50

I think the OP may have "got a bit muddled" as my dear Gran used to say, as a polite way of saying..........

Trifleorbust · 09/11/2016 13:50

No-one is suggesting she would be a disappointment, OP Confused

Bs are excellent grades at A-level. But if she wants to go to Oxford, the likely offer will be AAA.

Manumission · 09/11/2016 13:51

pissed my dear I don't know if you're pranking us all or just frazzled and in the dark.

If it's the latter, go and have a play around with the course search on the UCAS website. It will show you which universities offer business studies and what kind of grade offers they make.

Is it possible that that she's visiting Oxford Brookes today?
