To have expected a warning (fireworks)?

Our back neighbours (adjoining gardens) have just had a huge firework display.

We have a cat and a dog who have been scared shitless. With a bit of warning we'd have kept them indoors, upstairs and sheltered from it as much as possible.

Us humans actually enjoyed watching it but we had to watch from inside (as they did) due to the falling debris, which we discovered after a few minutes of stepping outside.

Our kids play together and we are on nodding terms. AIBU to think a knock on the door at some point during the last few days would have been appropriate? Or am I being a grinch?

It's bonfire night, I think expecting fireworks in the locality is normal.

We have 4 dogs and I wouldn't expect the neighbours to tell me if they were planning a display.

It is November 5th....what did you expect? no offence.

In the locality, yes. But backing on to our garden?

........ ok. Next bonfire night falls on the 5th Nov.

I have horses. I don't like fireworks as it stresses them. But I do expect they will be set off on the 5th Nov.

The pets have never been bothered by fireworks before. This was just incredibly close.

Put a reminder in your calendar for next year so you will know what to expect in the 5th

Yabu. It's bonfire night. Lots of people have fireworks in their garden. I have never had anyone pretty warn us or expected it. I have never prewar new anyone we are letting off fireworks on what is,essentially, firework night.

Yep yabu, but so am I. I have all our pets on lockdown and am getting increasingly annoyed at the distinct lack of fireworks so far.

I also think YABU. We have fireworks in the back every year. Its bonfire night! Keep your pets in. You should have known and planned for it.

and forgot to add, my neighbours have pets. I dont tell them. I assume they know.

I did text my neighbour what time we were letting of a few as her grandson (in her care) is disabled and sudden noise can upset him.
But I guess it is firework night so it's to be expected.

The dog and I did a ten mile walk earlier. She is so knackered she can't even raise her head, let alone quiver!

Actually I will say YANBU.

The fireworks being let off where I live are huge- proper explosions. My two cats are super stressed.

I personally would be happy to see a ban on fireworks being sold to the general public.

Normally I'd say YANBU but given that it's bonfire night I think it's fair to say its a given that people are going to be letting off fireworks, so I think YABU in this instance.

It's BONFIRE NIGHT, our UK celebration (not effing US Halloween). We do FIREWORKS on this night. If your pets are scared and you're doing NOTHING to prepare them, shame on you really.

There's a turkey farmer in the UK - weeks and weeks before bonfire night he exposes them to the noise of fireworks every night until they adjust and don't get scared. If you don't do this then pat and cuddle your dog when they display fear, you reinforce fear ready for next time.

I'm sick of seeing posts from my local pet sitting service (who are fab by the way) saying 'Pets are scared of fireworks'. Ok, fair enough, and I don't want to see any animal scared. But seriously, we should stop a national celebration/event for them? When there's stuff ALL pet owners could to to prepare, address, and support their pets instead of leaving them until it's flippin' bonfire night and they're terrified. There is a lot you could do in the weeks coming up to it to get them used to it so....

OP I have been caught out tonight too. I let out two cats out for a quick pee at 5pm, thinking fireworks wouldn't start for a while, but they came hard and fast quite quickly. Still very noisy. Cats not back yet. A bit worried.

Yanbu. It's basic manners - like letting neighbours know about building works in advance and apologising for any inconvenience. Always amazes me that people are so thoughtless. Back gardens are quite a different matter to the local park displays - much closer.

I'm also a pet owner and am spending my evening inside playing 90s House very loudly to drown out the bangs !!

Might I also add, I think there should be a massive limit on fireworks sold to the public because of all the prats out there. Sell them 48 hours before bonfire night and no sooner would really help.

But if you've got pets that you love, why in gods name wouldn't you prepare them for something you know is going to happen? Until such times as a law like this is passed (which will of course be largely unenforceable unless every possible retailer of fireworks including the internet can be regulate and policed...).
